I’m not sure if you know - I have a traveling heart. I have never been one place long, Neither a state of mind or state of being. Everything I assumed constant Has constantly changed. Always transitioning. Always giving like I won’t be able to for much longer. Always looking to the future with distrust. Always looking into the eyes of friends and knowing that their place in my life could be temporary, passing by in no time and becoming a sweet memory. Nothing much more than a sweet memory. I have a traveling heart - I did not choose it. It was born with every move, Every person who walked away and that I walked away from, Every person that came and stayed when I wasn’t expecting them to. It is not broken, A little scarred, I will grant you, It functions with a paradox of give and guard, Always ready to not receive the same effort it has offered. Always knowing that things are short-lived. But maybe, just maybe - This will last. Maybe when you smile at me 10 years down the road I will remember these days, when the road ahead wasn’t even paved yet. Maybe when I’m telling my kids and my grandkids stories, they’ll recognize your name. Maybe I’ll let my guard down and you’ll walk right in and make yourself a home. Maybe at the end of the day, Maybe, just maybe - My traveling heart will get to stay. // this is a recent poem, not in River Girl. but maybe it’ll be in the next collection 😏 if you wanna read what IS in River Girl, my first collection, check out the link in my bio. 💕

They say that flowers fade, And this indeed is true, But every flower that you see, Plants a seed inside of you. A big beautiful bouquet, In your heart begins to bloom, Or pressed within each page, Of your soul if there’s no room. You can nurture and you can grow them, Or you can let them die away, You can press them for the future, Delaying their decay. Your flowers will continue to bloom, Year after year, Don’t let heat, rain, or snow, Taint your spring with fear. I’m not here to tell you what to do, Just please understand this: Beauty is inside of you, No matter what you do with it. h.b. // River Girl, my first collection, will be out soon. 💙
Sometimes you have to realize that as long as you’re pursuing the Father’s will, you can’t mess it up. You are not powerful enough to derail the plan of God. You’re gonna make a million mistakes, and He’s gonna do it anyway. You’re gonna be confused, and He’s gonna do it anyway. You’re gonna make decisions riddled with uncertainty, and He’s gonna do it anyway. So just chill, and live this life you love.
I’ve had TONS of people asking me this, and to tell y’all the truth, I’m not sure. I’m inexperienced in publishing, and since I’m self-publishing, everything about the book is done by me or a friend of mine. My hope is to get this out super soon, but I’m not going to announce a release date until I’m absolutely certain. The last thing I want to do is tell y’all it’ll be released at a certain time and then end up saying, “OOPS, never mind.” 😂 I will let y’all know when I can, thank you for your patience!!! Y’all have been incredibly supportive and I’m so grateful. I couldn’t have asked for better people on this journey with me.
I think teenagers are the most underrated group of people on earth. They have so much passion and love for life, and they carry so much weight all the same. Do not let your age hold you back, or anything at all for that matter. You’re young and free and you’ve got a whole lot of “I wanna change the world” in you. You got this.

I was born with the name Hannah Rivers Bliss, but I grew up being called Rivers. I had a lot of nicknames, and one of them was - you guessed it! - River Girl. My mom still calls me that. I’d never given it that much thought until I was trying to think of a name for my book and nothing seemed to fit. God’s talked to me a lot about why I’m named Rivers, and even though I’ve heard the nickname a million times, it felt like the first time when I heard Jesus whisper to me - “call it River Girl.” It felt right. Naming my collection after a personal term of endearment seemed to fit perfectly - because this poetry is truly a piece of my heart. I can’t wait to finally get it out there.
keep collecting your pieces.
When I decided to do this, I didn’t want to spend months learning about the complicated world of poetry publishing, sending manuscripts, and never hearing back. Although I may want to dive into that someday in the future, my first priority for this book was to simply get it published. So I chose self-publishing. River Girl will be available on Amazon when it is released, so that everyone can have easy access to it. I’m so excited about this! I can’t wait to hold it in my hands, and to be able to put a piece of my heart into the hands of others. : The short answer: Amazon!
Today’s the end of 2018, and I just want to say thank you to everyone who has supported this endeavor so far. It’s already been an adventure. As we roll into 2019, I’ll be focusing more on this dream of mine. Stay tuned, and Happy New Year!
I love life. 🍃
Question #2 : What are the poems about? : When I was little, I would write songs with tunes I made up in my head or copied from other places. I didn’t know how to write the music down, so I just tried to remember it or write word versions on paper and hope for the best. When I got a little older and started realizing my love for reading and writing, I realized that poems were my heart language. The more I wrote, the more they just kind of popped into my head. This collection of poetry has poems from then until now. They are about my frustrations and struggles, my joys and celebrations, and everything in between. They are heart-cries to my creator and journal entries to look back on. There is no one specific theme, as I’m a firm believer in life and art being one and the same. I can’t compartmentalize my life well, so I don’t expect to do so in my poetry. : The short answer: Everything!
On Thanksgiving we always talk about how thankful we are for the people and the things we have in our lives, but sometimes we forget to be thankful for everything we had to let go to get to where we are. To be thankful for friends who turned their backs on us, for circumstances we couldn’t change, for failures - because these are the things that shape us, just as much as the blatant blessings. Thanks to @farawaypoetry for this beautiful food for thought.
breathe in. breath out. you’re doing great.
Question #1 : Who’s the illustrator? : When I decided to start putting this book together, I knew I’d need help. I needed someone who could understand what I’m trying to get across in these poems and turn it into art. I immediately though of Faith. Her art is beautiful and simple, she’s a really good friend of mine, she’s beyond sweet and beyond hilarious. Working with her is a blast. I honestly think she’s gonna be super famous in no time at all. I’m honored that she took on this project with me, and that she does everything with excellence. She’s a real one & I love her to bits. If you wanna see some of her work, go check out @faith.draw! : The short answer: Faith Sizemore!!!!!!!
Hola! My name is Rivers Bliss. I’m an 18 year-old Texan with a passion for poetry. I started writing poems a few years ago when I was going through a rough patch, and now it’s become a way of life. Whether I write everyday or once a year, my poems capture a moment in time, a version of me that I’ll never quite be again. They are a way to see how far I’ve come and to see how far I want to go. They are my heart’s way of helping me understand and express everything. River Girl has been a long time coming, and I figured it’s about time I start making my dreams come true. If you’re here, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU. Follow to stay updated!
