Happy 13th birthday to my little Holly. We’ve been together for 8.5 years now. We’ve had plenty of great adventures with plenty more to come 💚💚💚
Day 5 Solomon Islands (the last full day) ... We woke to the sounds of birds, insects and a few lingering frogs on the mountain of Kolombangara. We had a quick breakfast, released the frogs from the previous night, spotted some hornbills and head off on our five hour hike up the mountain. ... The hike is beautiful, you can get up to a lookout where you can see all the way to Nusatuva in a few hours if you go quickly but there’s so much to enjoy on the walk that you might take a bit longer. I could have stretched it into an entire day as there were countless birds and lizards. ... Once back at the lodge we had lunch and headed back to Nusatuva by boat to say a quick goodbye to the amazing people that took care of us so wonderfully during our stay. ... We’re spending our last night is Gizo relaxing and enjoying island time. I think everyone is quite sad to leave tomorrow but happy to have experienced such an amazing place. ... ... ... #solomonislands #uq #travel #pacificislands #science #conservationscience #conservation #islandtime #Kolombangara #snorkelling #birdwatching #holiday #nature #beautiful #nusatuva #muststay #mangroves #islandholiday #ecotourism #visitsolomons #frogs #lizards #snake #birds #imburano #hiking #nature #natureholiday #iphonephotography #mossforest
Day 3 Solomon Islands ... The day always begins with an incredible breakfast in the Solomon’s and today was no different. I’m getting to experience many new foods such as mangroves and water fern. ... We headed off on a 45minute boat ride to Nusatuva, a small island that’s part of Kolombangara. The ride was bumpy but loads of fun and we saw dolphins and loads of flying fish. ... Nusatuva is a beautiful island skirted by mangroves and the coconut trees are abundant. They’ve protected the waters surrounding from overfishing and as a result their reef is healthy and the fish are plentiful. They offer accommodation for tourists, more of which I’ll post about once I’m home. It’s definitely worth it for a unique Solomon’s experience. ... The community is so welcoming and again the food has been incredible. Vegetarians can eat a variety and it’s a feast, I’ve not gone hungry yet. The bird life is stunning and I saw my first cuttlefish whilst snorkeling. There’s not much reception or electricity but that’s the beauty of the island 💚💚💚 ... ... ... ... #solomonislands #uq #travel #pacificislands #science #conservationscience #conservation #islandtime #Kolombangara #snorkelling #birdwatching #holiday #nature #beautiful #nusatuva #muststay #universitytrip #islandtime
Day 2 Solomon Islands We started the day with the best breakfast of any Uq trip we’ve done so far. The pineapple is the sweetest I’ve ever tried and I am in love with having a coconut with every meal. We headed to the other side of Gizo today to visit a community that has set up a protected marine areas to sustainable harvest sea grapes for sale at Gizo market. It was so beautiful, the water crystal clear and the people are so welcoming and generous. After we went back to the main part of Gizo and had a sit down with some local NGOs about their conservation efforts. It was really insightful into small and large scale efforts in the Western Province, including some of the major issues they’re having with logging. I finally got some cash and some internet too, as you can tell 😋 #solomonislands #gizo #uq #travel #honiara #pacificislands #science #conservationscience #conservation #islandtime #universityofqueensland
Day 1 Solomon Islands (a trip with my UQ Masters of Conservation class) We landed in Honiara early after, took a small plane that stopped quickly in Munda and finally landed in Gizo in the afternoon. The plane is more like a sky bus. We took a quick boat to the main town and had a nice dinner at the hotel. Not a crazy day but absolutely amazing. I’m loving the culture, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. We’ve not explored a lot yet but what we have has been beautiful and incredible hot. I’ve never been so happily sweaty. #solomonislands #gizo #uq #travel #honiara #pacificislands #science #conservationscience #conservation #islandtime #sustainableagriculture
I woke up to a busy day and was so sad because I remembered there was no coffee, no milk and no bread. But my amazing boyfriend has gotten all three before his 7 hour drive this morning 🥰💚😘😍
Between Nov-April 70,000-120,000 black noddy’s (Anous minutus) nest on Heron Island, off the coast of Gladstone, QLD. So many birds on one tiny island is an incredible sight however the smell of guano is so thick it’s almost tangible. You adjust to the nostril sting after a while until a sea breeze gives you a whiff of freshness and it’s like stepping onto the island for the first time, again. Interesting fact: during the day you often see the noddy’s gathering together in the sun, spreading their wings and allowing the heat to kill the ticks. The smell may be bad but it’s quite the spectacle to see all the birds and I highly recommend visiting Heron during the summer months. It’s not just the birds you’ll get to see a plethora of....
Some of the very pretty cocktails we’re making frequently at work 🍸
My plants 💚 I stare at them too much 😂
I’ve had some visitors to my bee hotel. It took me a little while to find out what is stuffing the bamboo with dead grass but eureka! It’s a Grass-carrying wasp (Isodontia). This is a solitary native wasp that catches crickets or grasshoppers as food for its young. I also had some perfectly cut circles from leaf. I put two and two together and of course, leaf cutter bee 💚💚💚 🐝
F*ck plastic! These are my favourite produce bags by @sackedstore 💚💚💚 100% organic. If you need some I’m happy to pick you up a pack next time I go to the Sunshine Coast cause these are found in my home town 🏡
Stadiums across Australia produce insurmountable amounts of plastic PER GAME. In this war against plastic I wanted to know what our Gabba was doing to decrease their plastic waste. Here is their response to my email asking if I could bring reusable cups for beer and containers for food. It’s ok, but they can aim higher. I suggest selling their own special cups for the purpose of beer and selling water and soft drinks in cans. #gabba #afl #brisbane #thegabba
Any plant friends want to trade cuttings or succulent pups? I can get anything from the pics going in water. I’m looking for anything different 💚🌱
Thanks so much to @elysiumhairbrisbane for my long overdue cut and colour. Carla did an amazing job and I’m super happy with it. Can’t wait to build on this colour 💚 If anyone is looking for a salon that does #afterpay and #zippay then I highly recommend Elysium. They literally wined and dined me with a nice complimentary selection of food and drink. The head massage room/hair wash area is moody and relaxing, I even got a blanket and an eye mask. Heaven when my brain was overloaded with uni and work. I also love when people respect my need to do work in the 4 hours I sit at the hairdresser but also love when conversation is easy and free flowing. Thanks again guys, you made me feel very special!
We finally got our UQ Masters of Conservation jumpers and work shirts! Thanks to @moonshine_madness for the round design and @slow_mind_art for the horizontal design. They look amazing! 💚
It’s been an amazing Saturday off. We visited @aether_brewing and @greenbeacon for their incredible sour beers then headed to @semiprobrewingco for their 1st birthday and finished off at @slipstreambrewing for some final beers and delicious food truck bites. Then a great backyard party which Holly loved and I’m finishing it all off with a couple of beers at home and some scrubs.
