Where? Upper Peninsula, Michigan, United States
When? April 12, 1990
Story? Not all pics are of great experiences as traveling has its mishaps. We had gone to the airport with a carry-on bag and no exact destination in mind as all flights were booked. So, we decided on a weekend in Detroit and maybe a roadtrip outside the city. So, after about a day in Detroit, we drove north over Saginaw Bridge and to what the locals call the “U.P.” for Upper Peninsula. It was great and no one was on the road, which should have alerted us to not keep driving. Along the perimeter of Lake Superior, we got stuck in the snow. This is pre-mobile phone era. We had no way of calling anyone. I removed the rental car’s trunk lining to shove under the tires for traction. I cut my hand in the process and blood squirted everywhere. We were there for a couple of hours before a local in a pick-up truck saved us. It was a huge learning experience and very grateful he did not kill us because no one was around and he could have done it easily. The trip ended nicely as we drove down through Wisconsin and spent 1.5 days in Chicago. I learned a great lesson in geography and humanity. Have you had a roadside incident while traveling?
