RECALLING THE DAY - February 19, 1976 WHO: The Kinks @thekinksofficial WHERE: Houston Music Hall @houstonmusichall WHY: "Schoolboys In Disgrace US Tour 1976" . I had discovered The Kinks when I was about 12 or 13 years old, when I saw the band perform "Celluloid Heroes" on "Midnight Special" or one late night weekend music show. I ran out and bought "Everybody's In Show-biz," and I fell in love with The Kinks. . I bought a lot of their older albums and each new one as they were released. "Schoolboys In Disgrace" was released in '75, and the band was scheduled to play Houston in January '76. It was rescheduled for the next month, but I couldn't wait to see my beloved Kinks for the first time. . They played all of "Schoolboys..." plus all their big hits: "Lola," "You Really Got Me," "All Day and All of the Night," and "Celluloid Heroes," of course. . I was an usher at the Music Hall. I just had to throw on a suit coat and tie and show folks their seats and I got to see the concert(s) -- all free! Since I knew most of the house staff I could stick around after the shows, once the crowd had left. . I had to go onto the stage to get to the back door to exit. As I was walking across the stage Ray Davies walks out of his dressing room and said, "Hi, how are you?" . I couldn't speak. Here was one of my musical idols, talking to me, and I didn't know what to say. Ray sensed I was a bit star struck and asked, "Did you enjoy the show?" I had to say something. "I loved it," I responded. "Oh, great. I'm glad you loved it," he said smiling. . A sense of exhilaration suddenly came over 15-year-old me and I blurted out, "Can I give you a hug?" Without pausing or skipping a beat, Ray said, "Of course." He wrapped his arms around me and gave me one of those big brother 'I got your back' hug. Ray released me only when I said, "Thanks, that meant a lot to me." . The ice had been broken. We spent about another 10 minutes talking like new pals. I'll never forget Ray's kindness and the brilliance of The Kinks live!
