Ospreys are stunning birds. After the Peregrine Falcon (which is the fastest animal on Earth diving at speeds of up to 220 mph or 350 km/h), they’re the second most widely distributed raptor species across the 🌎. ⁣
⁣
Ospreys are quite unique in that they're one of only 6 terrestrial birds that have a cosmopolitan range, so they can be found in the temperate & tropical regions of all continents, except Antarctica.⁣
⁣
The other 5 land-bird species that have conquered the world’s skies are:⁣
• the Great Egret (Ardea alba) ⁣
• the Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis)⁣
• the Glossy Ibis (Plegadis falcinellus)⁣
• the Barn Owl (Tyto alba) ⁣
• the Peregrine Falcon (Falco peregrinus).⁣
⁣
This seasonal migrator is sometimes referred to as a sea hawk, a river hawk, or a fish hawk. These names hint at this bird of prey’s piscivorous lifestyle. Indeed, fish make up 99% of its diet! They have a number of key adaptations that make them ideally suited to this lifestyle: reversible outer toes, backward-facing scales on its talons to help hold its catch, dense & oily plumage that prevents its feathers from getting waterlogged, & the ability to close its nostrils to keep out any water whilst it dives.⁣

By the way, for those who get just as confused about that whole taxonomic classification system that biologists & naturalists use to sort out the 🌎’s species, last week I shared one of biology’s more popular mnemonics. Here it is for the osprey:⁣

Came (Class → Aves)⁣
Over (Order → Accipitriformes)⁣

Also, for anybody who may be wondering, ospreys aren’t as promiscuous as King Philip, once individuals have found a partner, they generally mate for life. ⁣

Morning alll 💟

Happy Sunday. This is how youll find me for the rest of the day ~ child's posing 😪😴🙃 Like all of us, I have a lot going on right now & it can be difficult to feel positive and grounded all the time. I'm feeling the weight of all the sadness heavily today, and I just wanted to share that with you so you know that it's ok not to be ok all the time. You don't have to be a ray of dazzling sunlight to have a healthy and positive mindset. It's ok to feel whatever emotion you're feeling, the worst thing you can do is try to suppress or ignore them. Let yourself feel. We're emotional beings and there's something so beautiful in the raw honesty of allowing yourself the space and freedom to FEEL. Don't try to be happy if you're feeling sad. If you can find the courage to feel those things despite the pain and hurt they may cause you, you'll be able to find your peace and recharge much faster than if you just pretend you're fine. Don't pretend. Be raw. Be open. Beautiful things come from owning your truth & don't forget thay you're still strong and have so much to feel thankful for, but that doesn't mean you have to feel AMAZING 24/7. Those things are all still true; but feelings are fleeting and always temporary. So embrace it all as it comes, and trust that you are exactly where you need to be. And you are never ever alone 💟
