We just finished our first large garden harvest of the year! We typically just pull veggies from the garden as needed, but this year we got serious about one of our goals: produce and store enough food to sustain us through the winter. Since Eric’s family was visiting this past month, we had a few extra helping hands and were able to harvest and put away 5 freezer bags of carrots, 4 bags of green beans, 1 bag of strawberries, 30+ zucchini, and a floor full of onions 🥕🍓🥒

Even though we’re running low on space (in case you didn’t notice the onions drying outside on top of our water cauldron), that doesn’t mean we aren’t thinking about the new empty spaces in the garden. Any suggestions on what we should plant next? We were thinking another bean, maybe favas or lentils? We currently have plenty of herbs (basil, oregano, cilantro, thyme, lavender, etc.), a few flowers (sunflowers, marigolds) and lots of peppers, squash, tomatoes, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and another carrot patch that will be ready to harvest in about a month or so.

#notabeachhut Actually the late, great filmmaker, writer and artist Derek Jarman’s cottage and acclaimed postmodern garden set in the eerie otherworldly shingle landscape of Dungeness on the Kent coast. .

Standing like a moody filmset in the shadow of Dungeness nuclear power station (see lighthouse pic), the modest cottage and garden are now as famous as his films, filled with coastal loving plants such as cotton lavender, wild poppy, Devil’s-bit Scabious and valerian.

A beautiful carved rendition of ‘The Sun Rising’ by John Donne on the sidewall of the cottage stops visitors in their tracks and contributes to the surreal brooding atmosphere of the place. (See bleached side view of cottage for visual of poem!) The garden has no borders, blending seamlessly with the shingle foreshore and visitors were free to wander. Jarman claimed The Pilot Inn nearby has the best fish and chips in England🐠😋

A return to this planting schlepped up here in misty eyed haste recently and subject of several sensible questions.
Phlox “Blue Paradise” a multi layered, bustling crinoline delightfully relaxed skirt to 3 plants of the repeat flowering but weak stemmed English Rose “Gertrude Jekyll” here trained as a short climber on an open cylinder of Chestnut posts. A seedling/relic dark Clematis, possibly “Etoile Violet” does a fine job on the post flowering train wreck of the Rose, deadheaded and skeletal with a scant handful of late flowers . Autumn sown Ammi majus planted out in March and threaded the entire Border adds a lovely, contrasting gauzy smear to the planting. Buddelia “Lochinch” grey felty leaved and pale blue spears is just starting its run at the back whilst in front a self sown Euphorbia lathyris is coming to its end amid a growing swarm of Verbena bonariensis. Euphorbia wulfenii makes a comfortable sort of footstool underpinning the whole lot, stopping it from collapsing out onto the lawn. As yet barely visible but present and still to come are a handful of Persicaria orientale and a shot or two of Cosmos “Versailles Tetra” which should take up the baton as the Ammi fails.

What a whirlwind 48 hours at the @americanhort #cultivate19 conference! I’m so thankful to @lesliehalleck for inviting me along for the planty ride to sit alongside @houseplantjournal and @homesteadbrooklyn and then give my own talk on my growth as a plant lady in the age of social media (was so thankful to see so many faces in the audience for that as well like @soltech_solutions @gardenuity @Herman’s And @houseplantguru )!⠀

Attending this conference has opened my eyes to the amazing, vivacious horticulture industry that supports our planty hobby. I met so many hard working people, so passionate about their businesses, whether they are growers, light designers, container makers or growing media geniuses. There is so much heart and passion in this industry. ALSO I was blown away with how many family run companies there are!!! I love a family business ❤️⠀

My favorite peruvianus. I call it ‘Sky’. I got it a few years ago and it was snapped in half when the dogs were playing. @wheeliewonka wanted the top half and we worked out a trade. And I kept the rooted portion. Then later on I noticed a rotted spot above the soil and took out the entire plant and noticed everything beneath had rotted out. So eventually I only had like 4 inches of plant left and I immediately started grafting it into a few pieces. Shared one of the grafts with a friend near Austin and kept the other two grafts. This scion here was also a rescue graft from one of the grafts that had pupped but began to rot. So I’ve had tons of bad luck with this clone so far and this is all I have left of it, and it seems to be doing the best this season.
