Meet Flora 🌿 Flora was the first praying mantis I ever met in the flesh. I had always wanted one as a pet as it is the only bug I ever truly was attracted to. I met Flora shortly after moving to Oklahoma. My mother brought her to me and I was genuinely surprised by my reaction. I lit up, like a child being handed a puppy to hold all to themselves. Unable to let them go or stop staring at them. I squealed at her and felt closer to nature as a I slowly gained her trust.
Praying mantis’ are intelligent, curious creatures with the capacity to remember you and understand their surroundings. My praying mantis used to get very excited when she’d see me and go to the door of her enclosure and beg to be held. Unfortunately we did not get to keep her with us long, she passed after 3 months most likely of natural causes as they only live a year, max.

3 months later, ‘Pickles’ as my son named him (or her) showed up on our coat rack. I assumed he was trying to find refuge from the freezing rain. I got back out the enclosure and to my surprise I found around 20 more babies all in the midst of hatching. There was 2 sacks (previously unseen by me) and one hadn’t even began to hatch.
After some research we realized the only reason they did hatch was because they were in the warmth of our home. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have hatched in the wild till spring. We have decided to house them to the best of our ability until the outdoors are suitable (we will be keeping Pickles) They’re more being born everyday. It’s a slow process but has been one of my favorite things to witness. The way they tilt they’re heads at you when they’re studying. The way the sway and dance.They way they clean their hands. I love them the moment I encounter them. I feel zen in their presence. They inspire me to continue to love nature and all of its magnificent beings. 💚✨

Happy Friday, Salticus scenicus! This little cutie likes to be called The Zebra Spider, for obvious reasons. 🦓🕷 ‘Salticus' derives from the Latin word for dancing, referencing their jumping agility (they also do quite the spirited mating dance 💃🏻), and 'scenicus' translates to theatrical/decorative, an ode to their flashy zebra stripes. The zebra spider is a common jumping spider (Salticidae family), and like other jumping spiders they don't spin a web. They prefer to hunt on solid ground to show off their mean hurdling skills. When the zebra spider finds a yummy snack, it will glue a strand of silk to it's launching point so that if it misses its prey, it can scurry back up and try again. They jump (up to 2.6 feet per second!!) by suddenly straightening their 2 rearmost legs. Zebra spiders, like other jumping spiders, are not threatening to humans ♥️. Sure, they'll bite if cornered or attacked, but it would be no worse than a common bee sting. Fun fact about our striped friend... they love the sun! (Me too, little zebra. Me too.) .

The European wool carder bee, Anthidium manicatum, is native to Europe but is a widespread invasive species. They can now be found across the US as well as in Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, New Zealand, and the Canary Islands.
These bees get the name 'wool carder' because they scrape fibers from woolly leaves like lamb's ears (Stachys byzantina) which they use as a nest lining. Males are highly territorial and will act aggressively toward other bees which try to visit the flowers they guard. Have you ever seen a bee guarding a flower?

Today's post features my love/hate relationship with parasites! Aren't these chewing lice adorable? But also, is anyone else's skin crawling now?

I suspect these are from the genus Strigiphilus - 'Strigi' referencing owls, the strigiformes; and 'phile', meaning 'lover of'. Naturally, this genus is found exclusively on owls; these ones were found on an immature male snowy owl that came to us from a wildlife rescue. Bird lice may eat blood, but they will also feed on feathers and skin debris, sometimes causing enough damage to feathers to reduce a birds thermoregulatory ability. However, they are unlikely to cause significant issues with an animal unless it is otherwise stressed. This individual was extremely emaciated, and probably didn't have much time or energy for preening. .
