A small taste of the brilliant, beautiful modern design of Barcelona on display at the @museudeldisseny, including the famous Butterfly Chair. @modernister would have died a thousand deaths over all this.

My favourites included the blue Pedrera chair, designed to furnish the attic apartments of La Pedrera, and this lightweight Asa table lamp, easily portable due to its handle. I’ll take two, please. 💸

These objects were all curated because of a standout characteristic: their versatility, or their innovation of materials, or their ergonomic design, or even their popularity. I hadn’t realised that Barcelona has such a rich history of industrial design!

I walked down the busy avenue and tried to avoid eye contact with a homeless man singing at the top of his lungs. When we were shoulder to shoulder, I couldn’t help but laugh at his jolly hoarse voice. Taking my reaction as an invitation, he turned to me. From his coat pocket, he pulled out a large shiny green apple. Take it, it’s yours, he said. Eat it and save the planet. I take the apple, and ask him, where did he get the apple from? He claimed to be a local farmer. No one ever sees me coming, but I’m here. There’s no need to get apples from across the world, as long as I’m still standing. I’m the most famous apple vendor for fifteen miles. With that, he carried on down the street singing terribly. Each time I re-tell this dream, I grow to understand a little more about how stories operate in our world: there’s the surface, the color of someone’s skin, their clothes, or their out-of-tune singing, and then there’s the surprising, invisible parts which blossom in the world only when we pause, look each other in the eye, brave enough to overcome our own insecurity, as we wait for the birth of the beautiful unseen.
