Feeling incredibly grateful for my time thus far in NYC. Once upon a time I called this buzzing city home. Coming back and reuniting with my girlfriends from college, seeing my big brother and revisiting all the sounds, scents, and vibes of the city has my heart beating with new inspiration and joy. My grandmother and grandfather met here long ago and NYC has always felt like the starting place of my life in so many ways. It’s incredibly refreshing to be surrounded by such diversity and beauty. Art and creativity. Business and pleasure. A major shift from life in the jungle but one that somehow reconnects me to my roots and reminds me of who I am. Yoga practice is such a personal experience, so unique to the individual. As a “yoga teacher” I feel that more than anything it’s my responsibility to guide people deeper into their own unique experience of the practice, rather than tell them how it should be done/felt/experienced. I encourage my students to really feel into their own bodies and to LISTEN closely to what their bodies are telling them. And then to HONOR what feels right, and move with compassion, intention, love and care. Healing happens when we learn to listen to our bodies and then take steps to honor our needs, which change day to day, practice to practice. So many people are so quick to run to a doctor or pop an aspirin when things feel off but slower to tune into the wisdom held within their own body. This might mean paying attention to some of the more subtle signals our bodies send us before more intense pain or sickness settles in; a sore lower back, pounding headache, leg cramp, fatigue. Gentle signs that something needs attention ~ more water/better hydration, more nutrient rich diet, meditation/relaxation time, detoxification (epsom baths, sauna, cleanse), more rest. What is your body telling you today? How will you show up for your own healing? 🍃

Today is my 33rd birthday. So I’m taking a geranium chamomile bubble bath in the kava bush and reflecting on life. The last week has been pretty wild. We almost got plowed by what would’ve been the biggest hurricane to hit the islands and then we didn’t. But we spent a lot of mental and physical energy preparing for it. I got to spend 4 rainy but beautiful days with my mom @rawtoeresa who was planning a trip at the same time and went against everyone’s recommendation not to fly into a hurricane and did it anyway. #bestmomever. We found out our sweet little Pazy girl (our cat) has a blood clot that could be fatal so we’ve been nursing her through this painful experience. I’ve been playing more music, resting a lot, taking walks, spending less time on social media,  reading books, feeling an array of different emotions and counting my blessings. Life is multifaceted and I’m finding that the key to feeling peaceful and happy within is learning to ride the waves of life with grace. Learning to trust in the universe’s plan. Staying optimistic and positive. Remembering the power we hold as manifestors of our own reality. And always, always staying grateful. Wishing you a blessed and beautiful day, friends. 💚 .

What is one simple change or addition you could make to your daily routine that would create a positive shift in your life? It could be starting a meditation practice, not looking at your cellphone for the first hour of your day, getting up 15 minutes earlier than normal and going for a mile run, enjoying a 5 minute foot rub/self massage before bedtime. My favorite lemon tree has been going off lately so I’ve reintroduced a daily practice of drinking hot lemon water first thing in the morning and my digestion has been noticeably better (which means best poops ever, twice a day. TMI, I know but poop is my favorite subject. 😆💩✨

In the long run, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference in how we feel and it’s what we do on a CONSISTENT basis that most supports our healing and transformation. So, what small changes will you make now to create a big impact on your overall health and well being? 🤔

I’ve been enjoying working with Mudras to further stimulate healing during my meditation and yoga practice. Mudras are hand/body gestures that influence the energies of the body and are used to cultivate a specific state of mind. They act upon the body’s subtle energy systems (meridians, chakra, aura) to create a balance of energies, hormones and nerve impulses. 
One of my favorite mudras is the Lotus Mudra, demonstrated above. Lotus Mudra is a gesture of loving kindness that reminds us of the qualities of compassion, forgiveness and the beauty and grace that lie within each of us. Consider a lotus flower that sits on the surface of a pond. As it opens to the sun its roots are deeply embedded in the muddy bottom. Like the lotus, we grow through the challenges of life to surface into the Light. The message of the Lotus Mudra is to stay connected to your roots and to open yourself to the Light. 
When this mudra is formed it balances the energy of the body and intensifies the flow of prana, chi, life force energy. It redirects this energy towards the heart chakra, opening the heart and and creating internal physical relaxation. It’s supportive for the cardiovascular, respiratory and immune systems. On a spiritual level, Lotus Mudra helps us cultivate compassion, empathy and love – all balancing the heart chakra. Its extremely helpful for those dealing with anxiety, depression, loneliness and fatigue.

Lotus Mudra Practice: .
🌸 Bring the thumbs and pinky fingers to touch at the heart, opening your other fingers outwards to create a bowl or flower shape with the pads of your lower hands together

🌸 Press your thumbs against your sternum and feel your heart beat

🌸 Focus your awareness on your heart chakra and visualize the petals of a lotus flower unfurling
.
🌸Take 4 long slow even breaths

🌸 Raise this mudra up above your crown chakra at the top of your head

🌸 Each time you raise the mudra repeat the affirmation: “I am love”

Guess what friends? NOT being on your cell phone is the new health craze! As a culture we’ve become completely addicted to and reliant upon our devices. We’re now seeing and experiencing the harmful side effects of our near-ceaseless technology binging. And folks, it’s gnarly. 😳

It’s now possible, sometimes even expected, to bring your work to the dinner table and your kids’ soccer matches, all at the expense of necessary downtime, real-life connections with family and friends, and your natural biorhythms. And it’s become a norm to live in a cascade of interruption, as notifications ping us and push information into our mental space, hijacking our attention. Non-stop access to social media, newsfeeds, and constant streams of information dissolves the boundaries that keep us balanced and healthy. Being incessantly clicked-in disrupts our ability to make and maintain genuine human connections, get deep and adequate sleep each night, and feel content with our own lives. We feel obligated to keep up, to show up, and to check in, voraciously consuming photos and videos of the perfectly curated lives of others instead of living fully in our own realities.”📱💻⚰️

I couldn’t have put it better myself. I’ve been pretty quiet on social media this last week. My husband and I just celebrated our 3 year wedding anniversary with a camping trip to one of our favorite spots on the island. We spent two glorious days relaxing on the beach, swimming, surfing, reading books to one another and enjoying true QUALITY time. No texts or emails. No newsfeeds. No distractions. Pure presence. It was a dream. On our drive home I kept the phone on airplane mode as I savored the last hours of EMF free existence. The tech break inspired an unexpected boost in creativity, heightened my intuition and calmed my mind. Returning to my usual routine of emails, texts and DMs was overwhelming to say the least, but I’m finding middle ground. One thing is clear ~ I’m ready for a shift. 🌿
