Happy Wednesday! Today's #WednesdayWisdom quote is another gem by Ian Morgan Cron, author of the Road Back to You: An Enneagram Journey to Self-Discovery.
•
“Ironically, the term personality is derived from the Greek word for mask (persona), reflecting our tendency to confuse the masks we wear with our true selves.” •
What do you think about our personalities potentially being our own "Masks"? Comment below, we'd love to hear your thoughts!👇🏽

FAQ #6: Ok, I know my Enneagram type. But how does this help me?
•
Each Type comes with its own unique set of motivations and insecurities. When I see and understand the subconscious and unconscious parts of myself that are mysterious to even me, I gain a powerful lever to make positive change. What I can see is what I have freedom over. What I cannot see has power over me. It's hard to make certain less constructive choices when we know what's really going on inside.
•
We begin to see there are viable alternatives. We understand ourselves and what's going on inside others, which builds empathy and freedom to act in much more thoughtful, beneficial ways. It also makes me honest, humble, and sincere in my personal progress, as well as more available to deeply and genuinely connect with others, rather than hiding my vulnerabilities or pushing my viewpoints. •
The potential here is unbelievable. And when I think I'm self-aware, I don't look hard enough at what I'm missing, which perpetuates the blind spots further. Humility is one of the keys to unlocking that potential of the Enneagram.

FAQ #5: Can you be more than one enneagram type? (Hari answers this below)
•
According to the framework of the Enneagram, your Type is fixed. That which uniquely makes us who we are throughout our lives is always preserved at the core. How that expresses itself depends on our level of consciousness or how self-aware and healthy we are within our Type.
•
We have the energies of all 9 Types in us and so we naturally relate to all of them. We also have a Wing, or secondary Type which is always adjacent to the dominant Type. And we behave like another Type in stress as well as a different Type in growth. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
•
Therefore there are so many good and real reasons why we experience ourselves to be more than one Type. But the most powerful thing is to understand what really makes me tick, pulling the strings on all the other fears and desires I possess, then to own that and work with it. This also expands our freedom to express the healthy sides of the other Types, which we all have access to within us.
•

FAQ #4: Can you recommend a good book about the enneagram? (Hari answers this below)
•
My first contact with the Enneagram was with Richard Rohr's Discovering The Enneagram when I was a young monk. I opened the book to read about my Type and was speechless. I immediately shut it and broke down because it was so embarrassing to see the sides of myself I hoped no one could see. That then inspired me to work on these shadows, which led me to the work of Don Riso and Russ Hudson, our teachers.
•
It's been a very powerful journey. We highly recommend Rohr's Discovering The Enneagram as well as Don Riso and Russ Hudson's Wisdom of The Enneagram which is a compendium of extraordinary knowledge.

FAQ #3: What does the Enneagram teach us that Myers-Briggs doesn't?
•
Myers-Briggs as well as the other popular personality typologies we come across aim to identify behavioral patterns, and that is hugely beneficial once we recognize them.
•
The enneagram goes many layers deeper by understanding the motivations behind the behaviors. This is the most powerful piece to understand. If you want to motivate yourself or anyone else, we must understand the underlying motivations.
•
People act the same way for different reasons. Myers-Briggs types can be the same but different according to the enneagram, because the enneagram is much more personalized and sensitive to what's going on beneath the surface of the behaviors. It's an endless universe of very very impactful knowledge, which when used to really understand and empathize with our own selves and the people in our lives, can bear a lifetime of fruits.

Rasanath was a 13-year-old living in Mumbai when the Iron Curtain fell, opening up India to Western commerce, culture and most importantly for him, entertainment. “That was the first time I saw the movie “Wall Street,” and it had a profound effect on me,” Das says. “I wanted to own a yellow convertible and a blue motorboat so I immediately felt that this was the place I was meant to be in.” After college, Das moved to New York, got his MBA at Cornell and dove headfirst into investment banking in 2006. “At my very first interview, my interviewer was wearing a cowboy hat,” Das laughs. “He handed me a piece of paper which said, ‘Investment banking is a business where thieves and pimps run freely on the corridors and the few good men die the death of a dog.’ My first interview question was, ‘Which one of the three are you?’” Das says he wanted to be diplomatic in his response. “I said I was a thief because I can steal hearts, and business is all about relationships.” Das was eventually hired by Bank of America, got a big signing bonus and six-figure paycheck, but he had begun to feel unease with his pursuit. “There was some hollowness to it. I felt it deep down and couldn’t put it into words.” Das had befriended some local monks at a Bhakti monastery in Manhattan and began going there on weekends to explore his existential questions. Eventually he decided to move in. His two worlds were starkly different. “I slept on the floor, two hours of mediation each day, no meat, no caffeine, no alcohol, and this was a big shock for my colleagues in the banking world — no strip clubs.” When the markets began to go south in 2007, Das watched as colleague after colleague was laid off. “I remember vividly feeling this was so inhuman.” Das says it was a big wake-up call. “If I had a conscious, I had to make a shift.” Das quit his job and moved into the monastery full time, leaving his big paycheck and his carefully cultivated image behind. “The entire crisis was a success without substance — that’s why it collapsed. That was the biggest lesson for me. Success is a result of deeper substance.”
