Pietro Annigoni "Self Portrait"
Pietro Annigoni, the great Italian painter who died in 1988, is arguably the one contemporary painter who have mastered the realist portrait- tradition from the Renaissance to the fullest. And made it into something of his own at that. His Italian heritage is certainly present in his works, but the legacy from the Northern Renaissance is even more present. The keen-eyed, hyperrealist style of painters like Holbein and Van Eyck is rare to see in figurative painting today. Annigoni gained great sucess as a portraitist in his life and painted several portraits of Queen Elizabeth II of England. I'll post more by Annigoni soon.

George Tooker "Landscape With Figures" 1965-66.

George Clair Tooker, Jr. (August 5, 1920 – March 27, 2011.USA)
Tooker, who was born in Brooklyn in 1920, was greatly influenced by his friend and teacher, Paul Cadmus who encouraged Tooker to use the Renaissance medium of tempera in his works.  The luminous quality of the paint helps to create a world that is real, yet not. It is understandable, when you study the works, that Tooker was classed a painter of magic realism. However, the works that clash with this description are the ones that show the alienation and despair that the modern world was seemingly encouraging during the 1950s and 60s and when this is where Tooker comes into his element.
Tookers works are associated with Magic realism, Social realism, Photorealism and Surrealism. His subjects are depicted naturally as in a photograph, but the images use flat tones, an ambiguous perspective, and alarming juxtapositions to suggest an imagined or dreamed reality. He did not agree with the association of his work with Magic realism or Surrealism, as he said, "I am after painting reality impressed on the mind so hard that it returns as a dream, but I am not after painting dreams as such, or fantasy." #georgetooker #tooker #art #americanart #americanartist #landscape #paintingsoninstagram #painting #artoninstagram #magicrealism #tempera #red #artjournal #artlovers #artcollector #modernpainting #20thcenturyart #curator #arte #kunst #malerei #figurative #figurativepainting #surrealism #heads #alienation
