"As a craftsman who'd dedicated much of the last fifteen years to one subject, arriving at this moment was like a veteran ball player finally getting to the World Series, when all the past experience of working with this very demanding, unpredictable medium and equipment, culminates then and there. Used to working in quiet, solitary and relatively controlled surroundings, for two days Sternbach allowed the pulse to take over, deftly arriving at the images printed here. Most of it was a blur." - from 'Joni Goes to Hawaii' by Robert Becker @robertbecker3

"There is no shortage of good days. It is good lives that are hard to come by. A life of good days lived in the senses is not enough. The life of sensation is the life of greed; it requires more and more. The life of the spirit requires less and less; time is ample and its passage sweet." - Annie Dillard

So, are we surfers living a life of sensation? Or could it be a life of spirit? Or is it a bit of both?

The process Sternbach decided for her Surfland portraits, wet plate collodian, was invented by an Englishman in 1848 and is part of the second generation of photography's evolution, following Daguerreotypes and Talbotypes, the original forms from the late 1830s. Its early practitioners were chemists as much as anything else, and its relatively cheap cost made it ubiquitous. The finished pictures, one-of-a-kind objects known as ferrotypes or tintypes, could be found in the pockets or kit of every Civil War soldier, North or South: Portraits of their sweethearts, wives and children. Back home, tintype portraits of those same men -- the quick and the dead -- rested on mantelpieces or in bureau drawers. (Coincidentally, the wet collodian process was exported to Japan by the son of one Hawaii's American missionaries. It thrived there long past its obsolescence in the form of glass ambrotypes.) Sternbach's finished product is a direct negative rather than a positive made from a negative. In other words, it's what you see when you look in a mirror. - from 'Joni Goes to Hawaii' by Robert Becker @robertbecker3 Read the feature length article, only in #print Magazine out now. #tintype from Joni Sternbach's 2nd day of shooting #surfland on Oahu. @jstersurf #magazine #surf #aloha

The genius in Joni Sternbach's pictures lies in contradiction. They're not what they first appear to be. The serenity and calm in every face and backdrop belies the chaos and theater of the process and the subject. Each shoot is a campaign unto itself, while what she photographs, the men and women themselves, represent all of the agitation and power of the sea, and the tremendous strength and passion of the people who ride it. You don't have to see the ocean or a wave to feel their impact in these photos and Sternbach knows it like any good filmmaker; if you surf or have seen surfing, you intuit it, it's already there. But the pictures are not surf portraiture either, per se. Her work defines the distinct line that separates an instantaneous capture from an image that surpasses the moment it was made; it's the difference between the seductive IPhone X selfies on huge billboards, filtered to the hilt, or even a raw piece of photojournalism, as opposed to an object of art still making a viewer stop in his tracks decades after its inception. It's pun versus poem. Sternbach's pictures are no more fast reads than they are easy for her to make; inherent are depths, layers and decades of experience, conceptual and visual, that take focus to digest and they continue, in every subsequent viewing, to stoke the imagination. Her surfer pictures aren't really about surfing at all. Stare into one her subjects' eyes and see what I mean.

Our friend Robert Becker @robertbecker3 wrote an incredible article about Joni Sternbach @jstersurf for our summer issue, out now. Robert was the Arts Editor for Interview Magazine in the 80s, working for the legend Andy Warhol. On top of that Robert has authored books and written for the likes of Architectural Digest. He is a kind of a big deal. And we are very stoked he slummed it for our humble little publication! Read 'Joni Goes to Hawaii' only in #print #magazine #surfland #jonisternbach #tintype
