A small Saturday night insight 👍🏾 We live in a world where children are being separated from their parents at borders. A world where an innocent young woman walking home in Melbourne was murdered begging the question- do women always need to live in fear if they walk home at night, not feeling quite safe? We live in a world where, still, women are paid less, valued less, heard less (I’m not even going to talk about the patronising commentary in last nights women’s NRL match). We live in a world where people still fight and harm each other with words and weapons because of differences in skin colour/religion. So today, when I saw the NRL share a cracking photo of 2 players from opposing sides (Vanessa and Karina), a couple, kissing after the inaugural Women’s State of Origin match my heart swelled. Sadly, there was backlash- people commenting that it was “offensive” or “confronting” but let me say this- this is the norm, it should be accepted as the norm. A couple is a couple, male-male, male-female, female-female, brown and white, black and brown- it shouldn’t matter because love really is love. No couple is superior to the other or more “normal”. The recent Australian health report showed that 45% of Australian adults will battle mental illness in their lifetime- those who identify as homosexual or bisexual are much MORE likely to suffer from an anxiety disorder than heterosexual people. With friends, family and patients who fall in this minority I am passionate about equality. It’s 2018, it’s time for more love, it’s good for your health to love and appreciate love (not evidence based but true 🤞🏾). It’s time to let the minorities feel included- and I mean all minorities. Let’s let love, acceptance and no judgement be the norm. Let us not fear backlash for being who we are ❤️ I’m done, enjoy your Saturday 💕

A massive fruit and veg haul from @dandenongmarket 🥦🍆🥒🌽 A few things- eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive; and that’s why I love this market, you can get fresh stuff for (very) reasonable prices (I got loads of vine ripened tomatoes at $1.99/kg, 2 kilograms of free range chicken drumettes for $14, a big bag of baby spinach for $2, zucchini’s at $3/KG). I don’t buy fancy stuff, I don’t buy superfoods (we can talk about the evidence for those things another day), I just buy loads of "regulation" fruit and vegetables and all the research says it’s enough to reduce chronic disease risk and risk of certain cancers. We have a fridge full of goodness and Miss S ends up asking for an apple, banana, cucumber or cherry tomatoes as a snack. I have a mammoth pumpkin to either roast or make soup out of. I have loads of zucchini’s for a tuna slice later in the week. I have Brussel sprouts for roasting as well. Tonight I’m making “Preeya’s healthier version of chicken parmigiana”- 🐔 trust me I do some sneaky things to make it better for you (more veggies of course!) but still use a crumbed free range chicken schnitzel from one of my favourite butchers - I can share my secrets later 🤫 In a nutshell- a colourful fridge is a good start, eating healthy doesn’t have to be expensive or fancy and yet again my daughter inhaled most of my felafel wrap at the market 🤦🏾‍♀️ PS previously when I’ve posted fridge pics I get people sending me messages saying I have processed foods and I’m not “clean eating”- I am real, I do eat cheese, I do use prepared pastes sometimes, I have a “normal” fridge and I’m not trying to reflect “healthy perfection”- though I don’t believe this exists- so don’t worry about pointing out my “fridge flaws” this time- #stillproud 👍🏾

A moment in the veggie patch this morning before we head to the market to stock up on fruit and veggies 🥦🌽🥒 (and a moment of “omg my kid is big now” as I took this 😳). Firstly we’re debating what to plant in the veggie box so any good winter ideas appreciated 👍🏾 Unfortunately my kale never quite took off and the eggplants were a hit but have stopped producing- so we need ideas 🙏🏾 Secondly, recently Australia’s health report came out- we got an insight into how healthy we are as a nation, our chronic disease rates, our alcohol and smoking rates and loads of other information. I was shocked to see that 1/3 of the country’s disease burden is due to PREVENTABLE risk factors. We can potentially prevent a huge portion of the disease rates in Australia with preventative measures like a good diet, exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, reducing alcohol intake, quitting smoking 😱 I’m passionate about this stuff (as you likely know) so this week I’m going to focus on the recent health report- I’m going to break it down, we’re going to talk statistics and what YOU can do to reduce your risk 👊🏾 We’re going to talk about the hard facts- what people die from most commonly, what you can do to stay healthier. Let’s call this “breaking down the health report week”- if anyone has a better name shout out 😂 You might think breaking down the report sounds a bit bland- I promise you excitement, motivation, evidence based medicine - you’ll be shocked by the figures and how much control you really have over your health. I’m getting very passionate over here ❤️ Taking that passion straight to the market 👍🏾 If you know someone who wants to get into the preventative health nitty gritties with some evidence based motivation along the way- tag them ☺️

Today we put on our sparkly shoes and visited our gorgeous friend who has a #newbaby ❤️- we come bearing a zucchini or tuna slice when we visit new mums; always.🌽🥒Here’s what I’ve learned in my time as a mother and GP (who sees LOTS of new parents): 1. New parents don’t REALLY want hospital visitors- close family ONLY most of the time, if you’re not in that group stay away and visit weeks or months down the track when people want you around. The hospital time is spent trying to figure out what the hell (I could have chosen another word but didn’t 😂👍🏾) is going on with your breasts, vagina, tummy, brain, this new human you love but are you’re confused by- so stay away 😳 The hospital time is for parents to regroup and enjoy the bubble 2. When you visit new parents take a meal- not stuffed toys or flowers- food 🙌🏾🥦🍆 Ideally healthy, nourishing food that can be eaten without cutlery whilst breastfeeding (hence the zucchini slice) 3. Stay for an appropriate time but don’t become an “over stayer”- a new mum is exhausted, slightly #anxious, feeling slightly scrutinised in the first weeks (are they judging how I hold/feed/look at my child?) - so remember to leave 😂👍🏾 4. And as my patient who is a very new mum told me recently- ASK how the mum is- actually ASK! My patient was puzzled as to why no one really wanted to hear how much she was struggling- she was sure no one had asked her “how are you really?” despite truckloads of visitors. If you are a new parent in the throws of #breastfeeding/bottle feeding (and can we not judge either please 🙏🏾),sleep deprivation, recovering from a vaginal birth or c section wondering if it is normal to feel exhausted/overwhelmed/pooped/question your entire existence- YES, YES IT IS. We’ve all been there, it’s awesome, it’s great but it’s hard and a zucchini slice takes the edge of. Tag your mate or parent who might need to read this or who might just identify with it 😘

Here’s what a GP does when we arrive in the morning- or what I do at least 😂 I trawl through hundreds of results- urine tests, blood tests, X-rays, ultrasounds, specialist letters, letters from emergency departments. I send my patients messages to come in if I need to discuss their results, I call some, I call to check up on the ones I’m worried about from the previous clinic ☎️ I call the patients I sent to hospital to see how they went. Yes, I talk to myself as I go through results so I don’t miss anything- it’s easier than you think to miss an abnormal result. High cholesterol, a positive chlamydia, osteoarthritis of the knee on X-ray- all results we need to talk about 👍🏾 This is the weirdness that happens before you even come in (and I am well aware I look like a crazy person in this!!)- it’s why I come in at least half an hour early- to do the background work 👍🏾 And now to start clinic ☺️ Please suggest below what other medical specialities you would like explained (like when I explained the difference between a plastic and cosmetic surgeon)- difference between psychologist/psychiatrist? When I refer to a Physio? What might a dietician help with?! What surgeon does what? Suggest below 🙏🏾👇🏾

The kid is seriously delicious ❤️ And yes we’re holding silverbeet from our veggie patch whilst we have a smooch (it went into tonight’s laksa) 🥦💕 Tonight here’s a health tip for kids and something I often get asked as a GP- when can kids have a pillow? Most guidelines agree it’s safest not use a pillow until a child is 2 and ideally in a bed (older kids can use the pillow to try and climb out)👍🏾 Pillows for younger infants increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and a pillow in a cot isn’t recommended as it can cover the baby’s face and lead to overheating. Lots of parents get worried about “flat heads” or positional plagiocephaly (the medical term) in infants and think a pillow may help- in fact it’s still not recommended as a form of treatment; instead we advocate for more tummy time and distractions to get the infant to move their head more to take the pressure off the flattened area. Even for kids with severe forms of this condition we don’t advocate for unobserved pillow use in the cot because it can be dangerous. Miss S still doesn’t have a pillow and due to their head size kids don’t need one to get comfy- when she’s in a bed or if she pesters us sooner we’ll think about it 👍🏾Commonly asked and pondered question answered ☺️ 130-150 babies still die every year in Australia from SIDS and safe sleeping practices for kids can help to reduce the risk- so tag a parent who might find this helpful ❤️

It’s #coldandflu season and I can’t tell you how many times people or parents come in requesting #antibiotics- “the mucous is green now” “it always goes to my chest” “I just need some antibiotics” 😷🤧 Here’s why I’ve only prescribed antibiotics twice in the last fortnight despite the many requests: 1. Most illnesses due to viruses- the cough, sore throat, nasal congestion is majority of the time caused by a virus 2. Antibiotics do NOT kill viruses, they only target bacteria 3. Giving antibiotics if they are not needed can be risky (not only can we cause potentially avoidable side effects like diarrhoea, nausea and allergic reactions in the patient) BUT we also breed resistance to bugs (the bugs see antibiotics too often, they adapt, they mutate and so our normal antibiotics can become ineffective down the track). If an individual has too many antibiotics (including kids) it can also cause resistance issues 😳 4. A bacterial infection can occur when you are sick with a virus which is why I often say “if things change” or “if you notice these symptoms come back”- we cannot predict if you will develop tonsillitis or pneumonia and so if things change you should see your GP for a review- doesn’t mean you will need antibiotics but you can at least get checked out 5. It takes me more time, I promise, to counsel against antibiotics if they are not needed- some patients can get very adamant and aggressive but at the end of the day if I write a script I need to know that a) you need it, that it’s indicated and I won’t do you harm and that b) I stick to guidelines and treat proper bacterial infections to prevent resistance to antibiotics in the community. Sometimes I truly believe it would be easier to write the script but it’s not the right thing for me to do as your #doctor. The less antibiotics the better (unless you really need them)- trust us when we say you’ll get better all on your own with some rest, fluids and TLC ❤️ Tag someone and spread the word 🤞🏾

Tonight I made a laksa with loads of veggies 🍜 (you know when Willy gets involved in one of these videos he’s passionate 😂). Each bowl has just over a cup of cooked vegetables (I measured it, that’s how much I love you guys, you’re my buddies) - baby corn, broccoli and mushrooms (that’s at least 2 serves of vegetables in our dinner 👊🏾) 🥦🌽 For the protein- tofu and fish cakes. I make my laksa a tinier bit healthier with low fat coconut milk (and less of it) and no noodles but more veggies instead👍🏾 Every meal can be packed with veggies and 5 serves a day isn’t hard to achieve 🍏🥑🍆🍋 The evidence shows that eating a diet high in veggies, fruit, whole grains, meats such as fish and chicken (whilst reducing salt, processed meats and red meat intake) can reduce risk of heart disease, stroke and certain cancers 🍋🥒🍆 This is why I pack veggies into all our meals, it’s why we eat more fish and chicken, it’s why our toddler is munching on pear after her dinner whilst we smash ours 🍐 Nearly every meal can have more veggies snuck in- forget the “rules,” forget the “norm” and see how many more you can fit in 👊🏾 PS we are showing you the veggies in this video PPS Miss S had a very mild version of this dinner earlier- less soup, lots of veggies and noodles 👍🏾

We love Brussel sprouts (and our new Inspiration dish)❤️ The key- lots of lemon juice 🍋 and crispy sprouts 🙌🏾 Miss S helped me make this in the morning- yes we cook in pyjamas on our day off 😂 I love Brussel sprouts because they’re high in Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an interesting one- lots of people swear by it and lots of patients ask me about it- the evidence suggests that vitamin C does not prevent colds BUT when you have a cold it may reduce the duration and severity of your illness. I just got hit with a cold so I’m loading up on Vitamin C with these sprouts doused in lemon juice and olive oil- in case it helps shorten my illness 🤞🏾Involving Miss S in the prep makes her much more likely to eat these! Brussel sprouts are awesome- most of us are scarred by someone boiling them and giving them to us when we were younger (ie. my mum 🤦🏾‍♀️🤦🏾‍♀️) but they CAN be delicious I promise! And I promise kids CAN try them, you just have to involve them as much as possible, and if you eat them then they just might too 🤞🏾

Today one of my lovely patients called me “super mum” 👊🏾 and whilst I had a moment of “oooo am I?” I thought I better clear this up just in case these little squares give you that impression 😳 My key concerns- does super mum spill lunch on herself at work, finishing the day with balsamic vinegar on her woollen top? Does super mum fly by the seat of her pants, struggling to make childcare drop offs, pick ups, anxiously hoping she finishes work on time so she doesn’t pick up her kid too late? Does super mum shove some roast chicken and chopped tomatoes and cucumber on a plate and call it dinner? 🤦🏾‍♀️🥒 Does super mum question herself daily on her parenting? (Am I too tough on my toddler sometimes? Too lenient at others?) Does super mum KNOW she’s awesome or is she constantly plagued by self doubt? I wonder if we all look at other mums and see their “super mum-ness” better than we see our own? I’m not going to invest in a cape, or undies for the outside of my pants just yet- key words being “just yet”- but I reckon we all need a secret pair of both of those clothing items because no matter how we do “mum-ming” and how much we feel we succeed or fail at our most vital job; we’re all a bit of super mum right? I certainly don’t feel like a super mum, or look like one but my patient’s comment warmed my soul today- and as I climbed into bed at 730PM (not a typo; this happened) I reflected on it and came up with all this 👍🏾❤️ Nighty night supermums. Feel free to tag one you know; or buy her a cape and undies 😂

Rainy Sundays are for stewing fruit ❤️🍐🍏 Haven’t made my stewed fruit for a long time- today’s batch has rhubarb from the veggie patch picked my Miss S, apples, pears and sultanas. No added sugar (only what is in the fruit), great for snacks and breakfasts and a great way to involve kids in cooking! 🍵 As a health tip- Miss S doesn’t drink fruit juice- it’s very high in sugar without all the fibre and goodness kids get from eating the fruit itself. Fruit juice is a big contributor to weight issues and dental decay in kids! Water is the best drink and eating fruit- stewed or fresh- is the way to eat it!! 👍🏾 Tag a parent who might find this too helpful 👍🏾💕 PS rhubarb is the easiest thing to grow and regenerates when picked! PPS we picked this in the 5 minutes it didn’t rain in Melbourne today 🤦🏾‍♀️🌧

HEALTH TIP for anyone planning/thinking about pregnancy 🤰🏾When it comes to Zika virus the current recommendations are 1. Don’t travel to Zika areas when pregnant (there aren’t many safe places now so check reliable sites like the WHO or CDC) 🐜 2. If a woman travels to a Zika area and is planning to conceive, conception should be avoided for 2 months after leaving the Zika area 3. If a male partner travels to a Zika area and the couple plan to conceive then conception should be avoided for 6 months 4. If a woman is pregnant and her male partner travels to a Zika area unprotected intercourse should be avoided for 6 months or the duration of the pregnancy. If a female partner (of a pregnant woman) travels to a Zika area unprotected intercourse should be avoided for 2 months 🙅🏾‍♀️ 5. Zika infection can have serious consequences for the foetus including issues with brain and skull development 6. We CAN test for Zika so if you return from an affected area and are planning pregnancy we CAN test for infection if you are unable to wait (it can be tested on blood or urine) 💉 7. All of us should practise mosquito safety when travelling- insect repellent, being careful at dawn and dusk which are risk times etc. Zika in a nutshell- tag anyone who might need this 👍🏾👍🏾

This was MEANT to be date night ❤️ Firstly, this is the brother in law, great lad, but the romantic footy date booked 8 weeks in advance to support William’s beloved Crows has turned into me third wheeling, copping copious amounts of banter 🤦🏾‍♀️ I’m not great at taking banter so tonight is a real test of my resilience 2. It’s always a worry when you need to wear 2 ski jackets to the footy 🤦🏾‍♀️ Melbourne you’re cold, love 3. Go bros, go Crows 😂 (that ones from the boys) 4. If you need a new dish to try the duck flatbread at Long Song is to die for 🦆 If you go, invite me and I can tell you the best things to order, but obviously i would need to be there to help you order so I’d need to come, OK cool, see you soon 💕

Some early morning shopping 🥒🍋 Some key health tip for kids and coughs (something we are battling with Miss S currently 😞): 1. Cough medicines/syrups are of NO benefit in kids AND the evidence shows in children under 6 it may in fact be harmful due to the sedative effects of the medications 🙅🏾‍♀️ Doctors generally do not advocate for their use in kids. 2. Honey has some evidence for reducing the duration and severity of a cough in kids- you can use a teaspoon half an hour before bed as a SHORT TERM solution to help the cough (not long term given the risk of sugar and damage to teeth 😳)- honey can ONLY be used in kids over 12 months, honey in kids younger than this can cause a rare but serious infection 🍯 3. A cough is often worse at night due to cold dry air and lying flat 🤧😷 4. There is NO evidence to suggest that vapourisers are helpful with cough or croup and aiding recovery- but they don’t do harm. Honestly, we use one when Miss S is sick, despite the lack of evidence but it doesn’t do harm, it does warm the air, it makes me feel like I’m doing something- so we use it. Will, being a plastics who deals with burns, is very paranoid about any use of hot water or steam near kids, so we are very careful with it and use a proper locked device which gets taken away the minute Miss S is out of the cot to prevent potential burns. Some hard tips and the evidence for kids and cough in the cold season- tag a parent or mate who might find it useful 👍🏾👍🏾

Friday nights are not complete without a red wine, platter, great friends and a husband home for dinner 🍷Sometimes if you come over you’ll get tandoori chicken or pulled pork burritos, sometimes you’ll get a simple roast chicken salad because I’m buggered 🙈 (BUT the salad does have yellow cherry tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, olives, avocado and lettuce 😍). FYI I do love a red wine and I believe in everything in moderation- whilst I’ll tell you all about the guidelines most days, tonight I just need my colourful salad and a red 🙌🏾🍷#honestyisthebestpolicy •

She just loves being smothered in Mummy kisses 🙈❤️ Had a very exciting meeting this morning with The Cancer Council - so excited to work with a medical body who advocate strongly for evidence based preventative medicine 💉 All your messages saying that these posts inspire you to add more veggies to your meal, to go for a walk, to practice sun safety to prevent chronic disease, to prevent cancer mean the world- they’re the reason I keep adding these little posts, breaking down the medical jargon and presenting the evidence based info in an easy manner ☺️ We should all be trying in our own little way to keep ourselves and our kids healthy 👊🏾 In another great piece of news- and tag your parent mates- we now have word that the Meningococcal ACYW vaccine (to cover more strains) is going to be added to the schedule for kids at 12 months as of JULY 1 this year!!!! So, very soon!!! As opposed to Menigococcal C protection only they will all get meningococcal ACYW protection with the new vaccine ! This is awesome awesome news and another win for preventative health!! Exciting times, matching navy tops- this Friday is a good one 🙌🏾

This morning as I struggled to get ready for work and get us out of the house, I found my child in a corner with her unicorn horn on ❤️ I’ve run 30 minutes late all day in clinic- to my patients, sorry, sometimes time just goes when you talk to new mums who are sleep deprived and emotional, people struggling with anxiety and depression and women who come in excited their pregnant. All these things take time. I honestly try to give my all to every patient and running late makes me seriously anxious. I try to be aware of the time but you can’t rush a patient out the door, you can’t tell the new mum whose struggling to just leave, you can’t tell the depressed suicidal patient time is up- so sometimes catching up the time is impossible. Today as I said “I’m so sorry I’m running late” every single patient said “don’t worry about it”- I can’t tell you the relief that brings me, your little smile and 4 words melt the knot in my stomach. I ran so late today I decompensated down thinking I’d miss my 5pm Pilates class- I called my mum and Will melting down (it’s funny how quickly you lose perspective) but alas I’ve made it, with time to spare, hence this post about life, your GP running late (and the anxiety they might have about it!!) and unicorn horns- what a cracker hey!! 👍🏾

Colourful cooking means goodness galore 💜💚💛🧡❤️ I constantly talk about diet and health but it’s because lots of us still do the simple lifestyle medicine stuff poorly. Eating a good diet, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce cancer risk 🙌🏾 I actively work to reduce my family’s risk of cancer and chronic disease by taking the time to cook meals like this 🌽🥑🥦- I aim for vegetables galore (and no meal is without veggies), I aim for colourful rainbow plates, I aim for at least 5 serves of veggies a day (remember a cup of salad is a serve, half a cup of cooked veg like spinach or broccoli is a serve) and I limit red meat intake to 2-3 times a week and use lots of chicken, fish and lentils instead. I make easy meals that last 2 days (and let’s be honest my meals are so non-fancy it’s ridiculous), I use frozen and canned veggies (because they count in daily veggie intake), I seriously limit saturated fat intake (like chips, butter and processed meats). It doesn’t have to be hard. It doesn’t have to be expensive. But a good diet, a rainbow plate, loading up on veg- it can reduce your cancer risk. Every single patient of mine is scared of cancer, so am I - it’s time to look at your plate and see what you’re doing to reduce YOUR risk, don’t you think? I’m passionate about this type of preventative medicine (you should be able to smell the passion whilst reading this post 😂). Whose with me? Someone, someone please put your hand up 🙏🏾
