Lime Curd Wreath Tart

With Blueberry whipped cream

And adorned with Blueberry Cream Cheese Macarons and strawberries.

This tart was baked in the same evening as the Raspberry Swirl Pavlovas. I get into impulsive baking sometimes.

I used leftover frozen Pate Sucree in the freezer. Macarons were from previous bake (they freeze well). And lime curd recipe was adapted from @inagarten's Lemon Curd Tart. The blueberry whipped cream was whipped using food processor method from @bravetart, with blueberry powder substituting freeze dried berries.

Beautiful Roasted Tomato Soup made with tomatoes from the garden. Scented with garden basil and rounded up with cream.

Cheesy Zucchini bites were oven baked and made with giant garden zucchini and white aged cheddar.

And Pesto Braided Bread using pesto made with homegrown basil and tomato leaves.

When ideas in your head

This is what happens.

A Nectarine and Zucchini Cheesecake Galette ends up looking like a pepperoni and olives pizza.

Yes, I laugh at myself quite often.

Perhaps I should have just randomly tossed nectarine slices and zucchini strips in the galette instead of rolling them up into rosettes that uncannily resemble pepperoni and olives.

The galette is unquestionably delicious. But the execution? It is definitely questionable.

Ah, cooking and baking is all about learning, especially from mistakes. Lots of them actually.

I am not perfect and will never be. That would be boring! But I think it is perfectly alright to strive to be excellent in what we do. Am I right? And this galette unfortunately does not say visually excellent at all.

Have a good natured laugh on me. And you are welcome!

Vietnamese Savoury Sizzling Crepe

Filled with shrimp and bean sprouts

It was my first time making and eating them.

A true and pure Bánh Xèo virgin.

The crepes were flavoursome and fun to eat wrapped in lettuce and topped with a handful of herbs such as cilantro, mint and Thai Basil.

Although I find that the turmeric in the batter conceals the coconut milk.

And I have to practice making thinner crepes so that they crisp up more.

Will definitely revisit again. Have you had your Bánh Xèo yet?

A bunch of limes sitting around means lime curds and also leftover egg whites.

So, it only makes sense to make Pavlova right?

Marshmallowy on the inside but a little air pocket on top which is probably not ideal. Ah, but it is still delicious and the family was none the wiser.

At least the pavs didn't crack or fall apart on me and stayed pretty white. Due to the fact that they were baked low and slow for 4 hours. Which meant baking till past 11pm at night because sometimes I bake on impulse. Raspberry swirl idea adapted from @foodloversnz Rasberry Swirl Meringue.

Let's talk about the lime curd, adapted from Ina Garten's Lemon Curd Tart. Technique was quite different from other recipes I have encountered and it was delicious. It involves blitzing the zest with sugar and then creaming with butter before mixing with eggs and then cooked till thickened.

And then the compulsory whipped cream. It's not Pavlova unless there is whipped cream. Anna would have agreed while doing her pirouettes.
.
It looks like any other whipped cream but it is not runny and keeps for days in the fridge without separating. Stumbled upon Stella Parks suggesting whipping the cream with a food processor and it was a simple but ingenious technique.

Because of how light pavlovas are, I think I can still have my pav and maintain a bikini mom bod right? Ahh just don't look at my belly pooch.

Yes, tomato leaves are not poisonous despite the hearsay.

The green portion of Trofie pasta dough was coloured with tomato leaves that had been blanched, cooled, blended with water before straining the liquid into semola. Not as green looking as I thought it would be but that is because I wasn't generous enough and semola is yellow, hence making the green more mellow. I will have to experiment with tipo 00 flour next time around.

The pasta was cooked and then dressed in a delicious pesto made with basil and tender tomato leaves, and blistered tomatoes from the garden.
.
If you were wondering, tomato leaves have a bright, herby flavour when raw and taste quite similar to spinach when cooked.

The nine year old gave her thumbs up at dinner time. And she is quite the fierce critic that I have raised.

The skin and fats have been braised long enough that it melts in your mouth.

Quite a magical experience eating it I have to say.

It is inspired by Dong Po Rou, a Hangzhou specialty. But I added my own little twists to it as I have Hokkien and Teochew (Chinese dialect groups) blood running in my veins.

Dong Po Rou calls for long braising pork belly in a claypot or pot over a bed of scallions and sliced ginger, then topped off with rock sugar. Seasoning is simply dark and light soy and rice wine (i used sake instead). I cut my cooking time down a lot by using the Instant Pot.
.
Added non traditional star anise, pepper and a couple drops of sesame oil just to boost the aromatics. And also some duck wings and hard boiled quail eggs so that we can have a variety of proteins for dinner. Side note - Braised duck wings are incredibly sweet and divine.

It is a long weekend in Canada with Monday being a civic holiday. What are my fellow Canadians doing? I think I am just going to take it slow and easy with my kids. Visualise a family of sloths.
