Design [brand]: Summer Hayley

Monogram emblem design combining S & H initials. The design idea was a 5 second sketch while watching baseball. So, unlike most of our our designs, this one took shape mostly in Illustrator itself, as I began playing around with it.

Design [brand]: AJ Manuel

Spent a few days drawing this design endlessly. The A and J create the M. And the design worked best drawn with a simple Crayola marker.

Close-up. One of my favorite things about handlettered logos is the imperfection; the holes and skips that happen as ink pens and markers drag on paper fibers. To get the exact logo script I want, I sometimes have to draw the same mark dozens or hundreds of times, and what’s interesting is that I find is that I actually like the marks more as the marker gets drier. They just look cooler.

Design [Symbol]: Life & Death

A relative passed recently, and I’ve been sketching on themes of life, and passing. Simple ideas. Something minimalist. Something someone would tattoo on a forearm or the inside of their wrist.

LIFE & DEATH is an abstraction. We usually hear about the cycle of life, something usually represented in a circle. But really we have 4 distinct phases of life. A childhood too short, an adulthood, a time of old age, and an ascension. This simple symbol is a representation of these 4, read circularly rather than drawn circularly.

Design [Album]: To Be Free Is To Be Lonely

The idea for this design came in a park one afternoon. Birds were covering electrical wires, and the sound of a car honk sent them all flying upwards. The image stayed with me, and worked well for this design.

Design [brand]: Kyan Ashly

This idea originated as a crappy handdrawn thing in snapchat of all places. I have a few apps I use to quickly jot down ideas when I cant find paper. Actual, good apps. But here, I just so happened to be selfie-ing at the time, this time. A very typical design story.

Design [brand]: Qiana

I love a clean brand mark. But there’s something about a truly hand-drawn look that feels so personal and real. It isn’t always easy to achieve rendered with strokes and vectors, but I’m always buying new pens and brush tips to find something that translates well from paper to screen. This branded Q was fun to create.

Design [Album Cover]: End Transmission

Sometimes I like the idea of splitting a brand name into parts I can represent differently. Representing the “End” without the word itself won’t work well on concert posters, etc, but for an album cover, or as an alternate mark, creates a cool idea and visual.

In many ways, our lives are like vectors – like lines moving in space, extending in space – each different, each unique; each with its own path, and place, and pace even.

And each meeting of two lives is like the crossing of their two lines. And all the time spent with that person is like the joining of their two lives, the meeting of their two lines – whether for 60 seconds shared in an elevator, or 60 years shared in marriage.

How amazing then, that any two lines come near at all; that when you walk downtown and look around at all the people on the street that day – that they’re there at all; that their lives brought them there, that their lines made it there.

The same time as you. The same moment as you. Against all that could have prevented it.

How amazing it is that of all the billions of people and all the billions of paths – each different, each unique – and of all the infinite ways those paths do twist, and turn, and turn around – that your paths did find each other – in that time, and that place.

Yet…paths do cross. Trillions of times. Every day. Even in the remotest places of the earth. And to each of us, some 80,000 times in our lifetimes.

LUST symbolizes the people who come and go. The chance meetings, the single nights together, the thousands of times with thousands of people we share our lives with another…for a moment, for a day, for a time only.

LOVE symbolizes the line that meets ours…forever. The person we choose forever. And while most people’s lines touch ours for but a moment, a minute, a day – one day someone’s line will meet ours, and our paths will travel together, forever. And the meeting of those two lines, those two lives, will seem as random as any other. Until it seems like fate itself.
