Happy Thursday everyone! Today we are continuing our Post Production Educational Series by talking about film coloring!
Colorists are those who color correct and color grade footage in post-production. Colorists make sure that all shots in each scene match one another. They do this by balancing color saturation and luminance from shot to shot. This way they make sure that no one shot stands out in the sequence and ensure consistency throughout the production.
Colorists are in charge of both color correction and color grading. These terms are often used interchangeably but are in fact slightly different. Color correction deals with technical aspects and adjustments made to exposure, white balance, ISO, and contrast. Color grading often refers to the overall look and style that sets the tone of the project. Here’s an easy way to remember it all: Color correction is one individual adjustment. Color grading is the sum of all the adjustments made.

Thanks for reading and tune back in next week for another post from our educational series!

Happy Wednesday everyone! Today we are continuing our Post Production Educational Series by talking about visual effects!
A simple way to define visual effects is that they are the digital effects made to a film during post production. Visual effects has emerged as a paramount part of modern-day film making and you will rarely see a modern film without them. This could be filling in a green screen, creating computer generated imagery (CGI), 3D rendering or animation. The visual effects supervisor (not to be confused with the visual effects producer or coordinator) makes all the creative decisions and works directly with the director off and on set to make sure he/she gets the visual image desired. The visual effects coordinator works for the visual effects supervisor in post-production, and the visual effects producer works like a line producer and manages the cost of the visual effects.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Today we are continuing our Post Production Educational Series by talking about special effects.

Film special effects usually begin during the production phase of a film are completed in post production. They can be broken down into two categories: optical, and mechanical. Optical effects are done by manipulating the camera and lighting which in turn will make your scene look different than what it looks like to the naked eye. This could involve working with camera lenses, types of lighting, or camera movements that give a certain look to the shot. The special effects supervisor is in charge of making the creative decisions and works directly with the director on set to achieve what he/she wants.

Mechanical effects involve working during a live-action shot and usually pertains to making things look/seem like something they aren’t. For example manipulating weather conditions like wind and snow is a huge part of mechanical effects. Pyrotechnics and working with scale models is another aspect of mechanical effects.

Thanks for reading and tune back in next week when we explain the difference between special effects and visual effects in filmmaking!

Happy Monday everyone! Today we wanted to give you a little update on where we are in the post production process. Our priority at the moment is sound and trying to make it the best it can be for our movie! - We recently recorded the voice over and adr (automatic/automated dialogue replacement) for the film! It was so fun to get some of the gang back together - Stormi, Larry Jack, Elly, Tony and Whitney. - We are in the process of editing the sound of the film, to really build the contrast between the microcosm of being in Mimi’s head and the macrocosm of what is going on in the world around her (be on the look out for a future continued education series post about this!) - And we are in the process of securing music rights for the film! A huge shout out to our fearless filmmaker Jenni Tooley for all of her hard work on this complicated process!
Check back in on Wednesday for our next post in the continued education series!

Happy Wednesday everyone! As promised, today we are continuing our Post Production Educational Series by diving into sound mixing!
Sound mixing refers to the postproduction sound editing after sounds are already inserted into the film. The goal of sound mixing is to meld the sounds captured seamlessly with the recorded dialogue. It could mean making that train actually seem distant or adding reverb to a bird’s squawk to create tension in a scene. It is also during this time that audio levels are balanced.

Happy Wednesday everyone! Today we are continuing our Post Production Educational Series by diving into sound editing!
Sound editing in film essentially covers the collection of all the sounds that are recorded during production (including dialogue) and any sounds that will be added into the film (like the sounds of a creaky door, or the squeaks of basketball shoes changing direction on a gym floor). A lot of sounds are recorded on set, but some are done after production or during but in a sound studio. Sound editing is not to be confused with sound mixing which we will dive into next week!

Happy Tuesday everyone! Today we are continuing our Post Production Educational Series by diving into film editing.
In this context, we are using the most basic definition of editing a film which is the practice and technique of assembling shots into a coherent sequence or story. During production (or while the film is actually being shot), multiple takes of each scene are done to ensure that no mistakes were made and that the scene was captured at its best. During editing, the best takes of each scene are put together to make the film. While this may sound simple, choosing the best take can be extremely difficult as there are many factors to consider - lighting, sound, camera movement and the acting are just a few! When the best scenes have been selected and put together, this is called a rough cut of the film. This job is generally performed by a film editor.

Happy Thursday! Did you know that our filmmaker Jenni Tooley is singing in STUCK? Her character Frannie is a country music singer and Jenni will be laying down the vocals for the film next month. We can’t wait to hear it!

Over the past few weeks we have received a bunch of questions about where we are in the process of making STUCK and what post production is. This has inspired us to launch a new education series about this stage of filmmaking! Beginning today, we will be releasing a weekly informational post about one facet of the post production process.
We are beginning this series by defining what exactly post production - more commonly referred to as just “post”- is. Post production is the final of three processes in filmmaking (the other two being pre production and production). Post includes all stages of production that occur after the shooting and recording of a film. There are many different steps left to complete a movie after shooting occurs. Some of these stages include; editing, sound mixing, sound scoring, special effects, trailer creation, marketing collateral and strategy creation, and more.
I hope that this helped you understand a bit more about the moviemaking process. Check back in next week for another educational post!

Help us get our movie “STUCK” to Sundance Film Festival! The final cut of the movie is scheduled to be completed in early August - perfect timing to start submitting to film festivals. Here is a quick summary:

STUCK is a fiercely independent female driven art film that explores what it's like to lose your mind- whether it's through Alzheimer's disease, addiction, or trying to control someone else's disease.

A ballerina with a baby and a coke habit. A regret-filled sister caught between her head and her heart. A country singer hiding out in her hometown. And at the center - one woman struggling to remember them all through the veil of her fading memories.
We are so excited to complete this film and show it all over the world, but we can’t do it without your support. The entry fee to Sundance is $85 - can you help us get there?

When I was 19 I was cast in a little film called Bottle Rocket—which is now a classic Wes Anderson film. 25 years later I played Ethan Hawke’s second wife Annie in Richard Linklalter's golden Globe winner— Boyhood. And in between I worked with other amazing directors like Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) and Timothy Busfield(The Night Shift) to name a few. What a gift!

Today I am making my first feature film—it has been 17 years in the making. The last 3 have been the most focused with fundraising, production and post-production. The journey has been a long one for me—with many life-building lessons along the way. The completion of this film is an amends to myself for not believing in myself sooner, a gift to my deceased grandladies who all struggled with Alzheminer’s/dementia, and a thank you to everyone who has committed themselves to this project on a variety of levels throughout the years.

We have grown from one tenacious filmmaker to a community of over 250. We have just a little further to go to get to completion in August. Please donate to our kickstarter campaign and share our posts! We would love for your to join the journey-- and if you're already on it with me, thank you!
