I grew up with rock music, ELP, Yes, Genesis and some other British Prog Rock bands. I wanted to be like Keith Emerson.
But, the day i watched the late @rizaarshad with his band, @simakdialog at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta (GKJ) changed my life completely, i fell in love with jazz.
With Simak Dialog, Riza Arshad pushed the musical boundaries and created a new sound. Many people has combined Sundanese kendang with western instruments, but Riza took it to another level, his ensemble has the sensibility and fluidity of a modern jazz ensemble while still rooted in Sundanese tradition at the same time.
The video above is an excerpt from Simak Dialog’s performance at GKJ with me on piano. One of the best musical moment in my life, The feeling is un describe able.
This Saturday I am very pleased and looking forward to play with this group again at @ngayogjazz at 20.30.
Wait..it gets even better, I will also perform at the same festival at 18.00 with @rodrigo_parejo and...even better, the next morning with @monitatahalea at Borobudur marathon.
Please come by and listen to some great music!

Summer 2010, It was just another evening playing with my trio at the Cafe Alto, Amsterdam. We were almost done with our 1st set, the club was packed, people were going crazy because of the music. It was one of those days when the trio was in the zone and the music were really happening.
Just right before I counted off the last song of the set, one guy from the audience approached me and asked to sit in, his voice was so slurred, i’m guessing that he was drunk or high. Without looking at him i shaked my head and said no (I had quite some bad experience with people who barely can play). Suddenly Tim, my bass player yelled at me, “Aga! That’s Roy Hargrove”. I immediately looked at the drunk guy and started talking nervously “Wow Man, sorry I didn’t know, of course you can play!” He replied, “i’m gonna get my horn” then he left the building.
In the end, he came back with his horn and played the whole 2nd and 3rd set with the trio, then he said goodbye in the middle the last song of the 3rd set after his solo. He might be drunk or high that night, but he really killed those two sets, it was such an amazing lesson and inspiring moment for me.
I grew up listening to his music, “Direction in Music: Live at Massey Hall” is one of my most favorite jazz record, It’s still on my heavy rotation for 15 years and itcontinues to inspire me to this day. Music at it’s best!
R.I.P Roy Hargrove 💔
So happy and honoured to record for @ligrotrio ‘s upcoming album.
@hamzahagam, @adidarmawanofficial and @gustihendy were my mentors back when i just started learning music. And today I learned a lot and had a great deal of fun making music with them.

@kevinyosua just gave me this short clip of Kris Goessens on piano and Marius Beets on double bass, jamming during the summer jazz camp in Seoul.
Around this time, 5 years ago in In the middle of a tour in Israel with @borismogilevski , i received a devastating news. My master, Kris Goessens committed a suicide. The world has lost a beautiful human being and fantastic musician. He probably was one of the best teacher I’ve ever had. He barely touched the piano in the class, yet he changed the way i listen, practice, play and think about music. It was truly the biggest musical transformation i’ve ever had.
Kris was a long time collaborator and Bob Brookmeyer’s favorite pianist. He has worked closely with many jazz giants such as Gary Peacock, Lee Konitz, Adam Nussbaum, Jim Hall, Mike Manieri, Jim Mc.Neely, Mats Vinding and Joe Lovano.
To honor his legacy, a website for Kris has recently been published, presenting some of his music (including a trio and solo recording that were never fully released), extra info and links to more of his music and videos: http://krisgoessens.be/
You can find the link to his website on my bio.
Excited to be back at The Jazz Traffic Festival on the 26th of August.
I’ll be playing with my trio feat. @dirasugandi and i am very honored to be asked to play some solo piano as a part of “Jazz Traffic All Stars: tribute to Bubi Chen”
