Happy Feast of St. Nicholas!
Happy Feast of St. Nicholas!
Help me out here. My ten year old son believes in St. Nick. Last Advent, my husband anticipated having "the talk" with him about Saint Nicholas/Santa Claus and the whole narrative, but he never questioned it and still doesn't. He's even a little disappointed that his peers don't know much about St. Nicholas. I think we were expecting his fifth grade classmates to give it away as most of them have older siblings. And we wanted to clue him in so that he can also "be St. Nick" to his younger siblings. I suppose it makes sense. We have family traditions tied to the feast of St. Nicholas. In the weeks preceding his feast day, we sing the "O Who Loves Nicholas the Saintly," in English and Slavonic. We talk a lot about his earthly life, his generosity, faith, and how he's alive in Heaven as the patron saint of children. Our kids set out their shoes with their Christmas lists, so that way St. Nick can take them when he "leaves." What do you think? Should we wait to tell him until he asks or break it to him that he's old enough to be St. Nicholas to his siblings? 😬

Love the small businesses today! They want to serve you! This is a little throwback to three years ago when we hustled during the holiday season on our Main St. @lemonadeworkshop Here's a little shout out to some neat "small shops": @telosart @pursuedbytruth @aliceandjosie @midwestnotions @fawnlyprints @ssekofellowmish @brickhouseinthecity. There are countless more, but I only have 15 minutes on my work break! Please feel free to post your fave shop in the comments below-- even if it's your own! πŸŒ πŸ–€βœ¨

I am an aberrant Instagrammer. I get stuck on what to post. Partly because I have three separate accounts and it feels a little like maintaining split personalities. But also, I'm trying to be conscientious about not just creating "content" for the sake of content. I had been consistent with curating a feed that toggled between Catholic imagery, outfit flatlays, and my Trades of Hope side project. (Behold all three) But I may be reaching a point where I'm discerning what's best for me spiritually. Interesting thing to note: Last month, when my husband and I left the retreat, we stopped at Costco before picking up our kids. It was a very disorienting experience because we had just left an intentional environment where I encountered Christ in every single person I met at the retreat and it carried over into that Costco. That peace has totally been tested over the past few weeks. Pray for me as I try to be more intentional with the people around me. πŸ–€πŸŒ

Holy smokes...it's Halloween. πŸ–€ Have you ever gone on retreat and come back to the real world thinking "I need to go back?" I unplugged for a weekend and spent a weekend with beautiful, authentic people who love the Lord with their heart, soul, strength, and mind. πŸ–€πŸ–€ I chose St. John of the Cross as my patron saint for the retreat weekend, not just because I'm in the middle of reading "Dark Night of the Soul." But maybe because I didn't realize how much of a spiritual desolation I've been experiencing until the retreat. I'm very grateful for being able to go and share it with my husband. Happy Halloween! πŸ–€πŸŽƒπŸ–€πŸŽƒ I'm posting a pic of my trick or treating crew later on stories!

We almost didn't make it to pick apples this afternoon. Our household has been stuck in a perpetual cycle of sick kids and home projects that we haven't been able get out and enjoy our weekends. Apples today, pumpkins tomorrow. Swipe left to see me twinning with an apple tree. By the way, you can add select scarves (like the one I'm wearing) to any order for $8 until 10/31. No limit via my link in profile. .

All the Fall feels.πŸ–€πŸ‚πŸ§‘βœ¨ I give up. I love autumn. Yesterday when I set up and shot this flatlay, I was squeezing my creative time in between folding laundry and making dinner. Some days I have difficulty differentiating which one of these is most guerilla in nature for me: acts of creativity or domesticity.

πŸ–€βœ¨ I sat and prayed in a beautiful church tonight. I took this after returning to my pew from confession trying not to look like a Xennial Catholic Instagrammer taking Eucharistic adoration shots. Seriously though-- I cannot fully articulate the joy and peace I have right now. Grace is unmistakable and real. Christ's presence in the Eucharist is unmistakable and real. Adoration shot today, flatlay of stuff tomorrow-- I didn't want to miss the opportunity to capture and share this beautiful experience. πŸ–€πŸ–€

I've needed Friday to happen for the last five days. Interestingly, I've got it together for #fridayintroductions.Β >>>
πŸ–€ I'm supremely bummed that "Sarah and Duck" is not on Netflix anymore, not for the kids' sake, but for my own. If you're in the same boat as me and jonesing for more, you can find the "Toggle Tangle" playlist on Spotify of the Duke Ellington tracks played in that episode. A few years ago, I started calling Ikea the "Big Shop" to get children excited as me to come along. πŸ–€ Before moving to Wisconsin, I lived in Albuquerque, NM for 15 years and I love watching shows shot there. πŸ–€ I worked for a year editing obituaries at a newspaper. Nothing like a deadline to kick my butt into gear. Did I ever tell you I'm a procrastinator? #procrastinatingrightnow

My words are insufficient when it comes to describing how horrified I am at the continued abuse and cover up by Catholic clergy. I do find it no coincidence that today is the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary or as it's called in the Byzantine Rite, Dormition of the Theotokos. In the time I spent processing today, I remembered the Eastern tradition of bringing flowers and herbs to the church to be blessed today. These flowers and herbs were used for healing after being brought back home. Our Church is in desperate need of healing.
.
I'm sharing the words of a few well-spoken Catholic women. There are so many fierce, Catholic Instagrammers who refuse to be silent.
.
.
@brickhouseinthecity: "I am mad that these men promised they would be Shepherds but in reality, they were wolves. They must go. If only one righteous priest would be left after a total cleansing, that would still be the right thing to do. The abusers, those who gave them cover, those who moved them around. They all must go." .
.
@lifeasleahknows: "I am angered and I am saddened. We should hold ourselves and our leaders to the highest possible standards - Christ’s standards. Anything less, shouldn’t be acceptable. It’s okay to be angry and hurt. You should be. The world is watching Christ’s bride and I am sickened at what they get to see. However, please remember, sinful men do not get redefine what it means to be Catholic. The atrocities of some do not stain the holiness of millions others and the holy institution of what the Church IS and the truth it teaches."

Last weekend I was glued to my Facebook and Instagram feeds watching fellow Compassionate Entrepreneurs post about Inspire, the annual weekend retreat for CEs. 🀩🀩 This retreat did not disappoint. Co-founder @elisabethhuijskens was on fire right before she introduced the Fall line πŸ”₯πŸ”₯: "These accessories are fun and they're beautiful, but don't forget about the woman who stood behind them and created them...who showed up to work in this partnership expecting you to show up as well." Damn. I'm upping my game. And I'm finally starting "Give Work" by @leilajanah. She writes, "We need more creative, determined, and compassionate entrepreneurs to build organizations that don't just act as a revolving door between donors and communities but actually bring new opportunities that negate the need for donations in the first place." That is Trades of Hope. ✨One last thing. Erica and Maria, the Guatemalan artisans who attended Inspire last week, participate in leadership training through their artisan group. During a Q&A, they made it clear: "We want people to buy our products because they're great quality, not because they feel bad for us." The same goes for all our artisans and products. 😍🧑 Let's show up for these women.

"There goes that ventriloquist act again." 🧑 I have my dad to thank for that joke. I've been such a slacker about posting pictures from the vacation. Here, we're in line for the Wonder Wheel waiting for a swinging car. 😱🎑 We hit up four amusement parks during our trip. Two of them right at Coney Island. Why did we picked the hottest days to go?? β˜€οΈβ˜€οΈβ˜€οΈ Glad I had Mike's new deodorant to appropriate. Let me back up! The day after Father's Day, the @influenster Dove Men's Care box arrived. Mike thought this was the best gift ever. πŸ˜¬πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Swipe left to check it out. ETA: We received complimentary product from Influenster and @dovemencare.

So many of my family and friends are in need of healing right now. Even casually scrolling through Facebook and Instagram feeds, I am met with multitudes of prayer requests for very dire needs outside of my own circle. Please pray with me. I am posting a prayer for the sick in the comments below.
