Time for a dip? This is a study for a much larger painting, whose location unfortunately has been unknown for the last 100 years. However this smaller work is so finished that it can be regarded as a completed painting. It is a good example of Krøyer's particular talent for painting backlighting: Along the contours of the boys’ bodies one can see how they are bathed in sunlight from the side of the body, which is turned away from the viewer. Peder Severin Krøyer - 'Wait for us!'. 1892 #krøyer #skagensmuseum

From our current exhibition of female portraits by Michael Ancher: On the left on the wall in a yellow dress is ‘Merry Elsie’. She was a well-known eccentric character in Skagen, and apprently had 'lost her marbles' when her fiancé drowned just a few days prior to their wedding. Nevertheless, she was known to the whole town as ‘Merry Elsie’. #michaelancher #skagensmuseum

Michael Ancher's portraits of his wife Anna range from small, intimate depictions set in their shared home to monumental full-length portraits, and his painterly eye for her testifies to a marriage characterised by mutual respect and life. 'The scent of the water, the sound of the sea ...': Viggo Johansen - 'Dividing the catch'. 1885. The depicts a situation typical for the Skagen fishermen of the period, returning from fishing and in the process of dividing the catch among themselves. Many fishermen were organised in guilds and shared the costs of the boat and the fishing gear as well as the income from the fish that were landed. The painting alternates between areas with a lot of detail to areas with such loose brushstrokes that entire elements are dissolved and become almost abstract. Even the fish, which the action of the painting revolves around, are reduced to shadows in the sand. It is thus difficult to judge whether the catch has been poor, or if the fish have been left out in favour of the overall expression. #viggojohansen

The writer Alba Schwartz came to Skagen, when her husband became mayor. Soon she moved in the same circles as the artists. Her published memoires are a rich source about life in the artists’ colony in Skagen and she doesn’t shy away from a good bit of gossip.

Happy Birthday Michael, 13 x 13 years today. ☉ "- Born in the previous century, unfortunately on the island of Bornholm in the vicinity of the high ground church in Rutsker. - Unfortunately yes, because every time I have another view than others - and I often do - it's always said: 'You can not trust him because he is from Bornholm'" - Michael Ancher, 1904. Self-portrait with family from 1891. #michaelancher

While the majority of the Skagen artist's colony were painters, the flock also attracted a lot of other Scandinavian cultural personalities, including the Danish soprano Beatrice Diderichsen, who had her portrait painted by Krøyer in 1887 for the frieze in Brøndum's dining room. Several of the artists presented Diderichsen with works, perhaps as a token of gratitude for her contribution to the entertainment by singing either solo or in duets with some of the painters. She died at the age of 30 - on 3 May 1890 in "a carriage accident" in Copenhagen #pederseverinkrøyer #brøndumsspisesal #krøyer
