Escallonia 'Pink Princess'Escallonia x exoniensis 'Fradesii' is an evergreen flowering shrub native to South America. This species is a very popular ornamental because of its hardy nature, growing particularly well in coastal maritime climates. I found this particular plant growing next to a Safeway. It blooms from late summer into fall. It does not appear to be edible or used for medicinal purposes, but if you know otherwise please chime in! Hebe 'Autumn Glory', is a flowering perennial shrub native to New Zealand. There are over 100 species of Hebe and many cultivars popular in the UK and United States. These shrubs can have beautiful flowers! I found this one growing in downtown Astoria a few weeks ago. All Hebe plants are toxic to humans so don't eat it :) Sorry for the long posting hiatus - life has been hectic and I recently lost my dog and plant IDing companion of 10 years to cancer. :( It's made motivating to make plant posts a bit of a struggle. Lesser burdock, Arctium minus, is a large invasive biennial herb introduced from Eurasia. When in flower lesser burdock can easily be mistaken for a thistle but upon closer examination it becomes clear that it is something different given its large smooth leaves (no spines like a thistle). Lesser burdock is considered a noxious weed throughout North America- due to its easy spreading nature, tendancy to harbor fungi that are harmful to crop production, and when grazed by dairy animals can give milk a bitter flavor. The species was likely introduced unintentionally through imported forage (being a common pasture weed) and intentionally for its edibility and medicinal properties. Lesser burdock root and young stems are edible and the spieces is commonly used as an herbal panacea in Chinese medicine. #Portland #Oregon #weeds #herbs #wildcrafting #edible #science #urbanecology #botany #humanhabitat #garden #biology #nature #plants #flowers #flowerfordays #plantporn #natureporn #flowerstagram #portlandnature #biology #ecology #macro #macrophotography #pdx #pacificnorthwest #instanature #burdock

Douglas aster, Symphyotrichum subspicatum - is a native perennial found populating gardens, vacant lots, wetlands, and a variety of other habitats. This aster species and its cultivars are robust (can be weedy) growers and a good addition to any urban garden here in the PNW. Pollinators and spiders love it. I could not (sadly) find any info on its edibility or potential medicinal properties.

Impatiens capensis, orange "touch me not" jewelweed, is an annual flowering herb native to North America. I found this specimen growing in the tidal wetlands of Whites Island in the Columbia River this week during our annual round of wetland monitoring. This species is also commonly found in wet pastures, ditches, and roadsides. The seed pods of this plant are really cool and explode when lightly touched- expelling seeds when seed pods are mature - which is where the species gets its "touch me not" name. Native Americans used this species to treat skin ailments such as poison ivy rash. The young shoots and leaves of this species are edible when thoroughly cooked.

White stonecrop flowers, Sedum album, is a perennial succulent herb native to northern temperate regions of the world. This species is a favorite for rock gardens and low maintenance ground cover. The leaves are edible raw or cooked, however given how tiny they are I am not sure it would be worth the effort :) These plants flower in July and August. I am not sure what species of Bee this is but if you know please chime in!

Butterfly bush and bee butt :) - Buddleja davidii 'Royal Red' cultivar - a shrub introduced from Eurasia as a popular ornamental in the 1950's. Escaping the bounds of the garden this species has become a very common urban shrub and a good food source to pollinators in the urban landscape. Commercial sale of this species is now banned in most states due to its invasive nature.

This past week Scarlett turned 6.5 months old! I can't hardly believe it. In the first photo I have squeezed her into my favorite baby hat for the last time :) She is growing and learning (and grabbing) new things everyday - right now she has just learned to click her tougne! She is also showing her attitude and lets us know when she doesn't want play time to end <3 her current favorite food is oatmeal with apple and blueberry baby food. We had our 6 month check up yesterday and the Dr. said she is doing great! This was also our first week at daycare. It was a hard transition but by Thursday Scarlett was happily chatting with the other babies and giggling at the ladies in charge <3 postpartum wise I finally am feeling more like myself and although I still have a ways to go with the baby weight. So glad I am starting to feel more comfortable in my own skin again. I am sure the next 2 months of fulltime wetland surveying will help get me back in shape. :P <3 Some of these photos are from a family trip we took back east at the end of June.

Teasel flower head - Dipsacus fullonum (Dipsacus sylvestris), is a biennial flowering herb introduced from Eurasia. Teasel was introduced because of its dried flower head's usefulness as a comb for cleaning wool during the early era of textile production.Teasel also has a history of use as a garden ornamental, its dried flower heads being widely used in cut floral displays. Teasel is now considered a noxious weed and can be found throughout the United States growing in vacant lots and along roadsides. I found this Teasle plant (and many others) growing along the road at the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge this week while visiting one of the wetland sites I monitor for work. Historically, a fusion made from the root was used to treat a myriad of medical issues. #Portland #Oregon #weeds #herbs #wildcrafting #edible #science #urbanecology #botany #humanhabitat #garden #biology #nature #plants #flowers #flowerfordays #plantporn #natureporn #flowerstagram #portlandnature #biology #ecology #macro #macrophotography #pdx #pacificnorthwest #instanature #teasel

Lavender is popular as a perfume and its fragrant flowers are also used in cooking. Lavender oil can be used as a relaxant (when used in massage and aroma therapy).
Also pollinators love lavender!

Ladybug larvae on lavender with California poppies in the background. Ladybugs are the natural enemies of many insects, especially aphids and other sap feeders. A single lady beetle may eat as many as 5,000 aphids in its lifetime. I've been seeing these larvae all over Portland- don't be afraid! These larvae will pupate into the characteristic red beetle soon and these larvae and beetle pose no danger to humans. I just bought 1500 ladybugs for my garden from Fred Meyers - our hops have a terrible aphid infestation. Wish me luck!

Black lace elderberry, Sambucus nigra 'Eva', is a common introduced ornamental cultivar of European edlerberry - a large deciduous flowering shrub. Black lace can be easily distinguished from native elderberry species - as the leaves are dark purple and finely cut (lace like) and it produces large flat flower clusters. Native species (Red and Blue elderberry) have more conical shaped flower clusters and green oblong pinnately compound leaves. Sambucus flowers and berries are commonly used for making wine and jellies and the species is known to have many medicinal properties. Although edible, this species can be toxic if not prepared properly.

California poppy- Eschscholzia californica, is a perennial/annual herb native to California, Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico. This species is also popular as an ornamental throughout the United States and world wide. Growing easily (even in urban environments) - it has weedy characteristics and has become invasive in some regions. Plant extracts from this species act as a sedative when smoked. The effect however is far milder than that of opium- as it contains a different class of alkaloids compared to other poppy species. The leaves of the California poppy are edible when cooked.
