Firstly, THANK YOU so, so much for all of the love on my last post. I received SO many lovely messages and comments from friends and friends I haven’t met yet. I find myself starting up with negative thoughts a lot when I’m tired and with a crazy busy week of work and a teething babe who isn’t sleeping, well, it was the perfect storm. But today I felt pumped and ready to tackle a new day 🙌🏻 I’m actually thanking my lucky stars that I’ve been lucky enough to try out these @livesoulara pre-made plant based meals this week. Not having to make myself lunch has been my saviour. Gosh I wish I could remember what this dish was called because it was sooo good. They’re purple sweet potato cakes with a watercress salad plus a cold pressed watermelon juice. Sah good. Anyhoo, I’ve wrapped up my latest project for a client, just in time to enjoy a fun and relaxing day with my girls tomorrow. Starting with a gym sesh of course and then I’m thinking a park date ☺️ what are your weekend plans?

Yesterday I fell pray to the instagram comparison game. You know the one? Where you see the other girl with the better body/healthier lunch/prettier Insta feed/better photography/more stylish outfit/better all the things? It’s a pretty shitty game. Mainly because it doesn’t feel good, it doesn’t make me happy and it definitely won’t make me a better person. Usually I fall pray to this game when I am overtired and feeling uninspired and frustrated. The best thing for me to get out of this funk is to get outside and go for a walk or run. I leave my phone at home and I let my head just unravel all of the thoughts that it needs to. Do you ever get in a funk or succumb to comparing yourself to everyone else? What do you do to snap out of it? 
Also, pictured are gluten, dairy and refined sugar free freakin awesome accidental brownie cookies... brookies? Briscuits? Crownies? Basically they’re the Brangelina of cookies. I’ll post the recipe once I’ve refined it a tad.

This week is a v busy week with recipe developing for clients, which always means tasty leftovers 🤤 I made these parfaits for Dylan (and then proceeded to forget to give them to him 🤦🏻‍♀️) out of leftover chocolate biscuits (actually more like a brownie in a biscuit, say waaaa) with @coyo_is_coconuts  and a berry compote. Drool. Also, I totes realised that I promised you all the Cranberry Bliss Ball recipe over the weekend but then this last minute client work popped up so it’s been a little crazy. Would you like to learn how to make a basic sauerkraut recipe? Did you know it is actually suuuper easy? I’ve posted a how to video (created with my little helper Evie 😍) over on my IGTV channel (are you on the #IGTV bandwagon yet? It’s actually pretty cool!). You can view it by going to my profile and hitting the little IGTV circle 👌🏻 you might need to download the app if you haven’t already 🤷🏻‍♀️ So, if you haven’t gotten on the fermented foods/sauerkraut bandwagon yet (not sure what’s with me and bandwagon tonight 🤷🏻‍♀️) then here are a few reasons why you should:
1. Fermented foods contain lactic acid bacteria (good bacteria) that boost gut health, promote gut healing and boost immunity.
2. The fermenting process helps to retain the nutritional value of the food you’re fermenting, meaning more nutrients for you 🙌🏻
3. Fermenting is a great way to use up excess veg, helping to prevent waste AND saving you money in the long run. 
The key point here really is gut health. Without a healthy gut, our body can’t absorb the nutrients it needs to stay strong and healthy. Poor gut health can lead to (or be caused by) food intolerances, mood disorders (anxiety, depression and poor behaviour etc), poor immune health, poor skin health and basically any other system in the body that you can think of. Having a healthy gut is ESSENTIAL to overall health and wellness. .

Did you know that every 20 minutes, a Queenslander is diagnosed with Cancer? A little while ago now, a beautiful friend of mine, Naomi, was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukaemia. So when the @cancercouncilqld contacted me to ask if I would help to spread awareness for this coming #DaffodilDay I was touched that I could do something to help (even if in a very small way). I think the hardest thing as a friend of someone with cancer is knowing how to support that person. When I chatted to Naomi about it, she said that “it’s the small things really, but they meant the world to me, and my heart swells with love and appreciation remembering all of those little tokens of love.” For the full post go to www.sarahbellnutrition.com

Also, I’m entering this shot intone amazing  @bealubas (food photographer extraordinaire) #belightinspired challenge - one thing I loved when I first started becoming interested in photography was noticing the light and how much it changes colour throughout the day. I love shooting at around 10am when it’s not too cool (blue) but not at all warm (yellow). I love this challenge for reigniting that emphasis on light for me rather than it being more of a mechanical “I know it works to shoot from this angle or that so I’ll just stick with it” kind of thing. Any other photographers out there get my drift?

Hands up if you are down dog with matcha? It’s been my morning beverage of choice for quite a few years now. I’ve just come off a brief hiatus from matcha because I was finding that even the littlest bit of caffeine was having a profound negative effect on my nervous system (in the form of heightened anxiety & irritability, tight muscles, headaches and poor sleep). I’m drinking matcha again but only in small amounts and only on days that I’m working and the kids are at daycare/kindy/school/mums house. I find that my nervous system can take a certain amount of stress but too much and it tips over the edge - so if I have any caffeine when I already have a bit of added stress from the kids being at home (sorry kids, you know I love you) then matcha pushes my nervous system too far and I end up with the symptoms I mentioned earlier. This probably means that I should avoid caffeine altogether until I repair my fizzled out nervous system but hey I just love it so matcha (see what I did there?). Hands up 🙋🏻‍♀️ if you can’t quite hack caffeine?

Do you have a picky eater? I have two very good eaters and one relatively picky when she feels like it eater. Breakfast is always a challenge, although I’m quite sure Evie would happily eat baked beans every morning I don’t really want her to be eating that much sugar on the daily. One day I will try her on some homemade baked beans, the trouble with Evie though is that she has a sixth sense for when I am trying to healthify her favs. They just know right? My biggest piece of advice for mums and dads with picky eaters is to never give up. ALWAYS offer them vegetables because if they grace their plates everyday, eventually they will cave and try it. And who knows, they might even decide one day that they like it. Well, I am pleased to announce (and I hope it gives my fellow picky eater mums and dads some hope) that this advice has worked very well for me of late. I’m a big homemade hummus fan and every time I make it, I encourage Evie to try it - which she does with a response of a wrinkled up nose and an “I don’t like it/that’s gross/get it outa my face (ok maybe she doesn’t say that 😜)”. But not today! Today I had a double win because 1. Evie actually asked me for hummus AND she liked it! And 2. Dylan reported to me that he told his teacher that his Mum makes the best hummus ever (that’s me 🙋🏻‍♀️). So my friends, persistence really does pay. Also, I’m hoping that Evie will give me extra cred because I made the hummus her fav colour by adding roasted beetroot. .

2 things || FIRSTLY, hands up if you’re gluten free 🙋🏻‍♀️ I’ve been switching over gradually since the start of the year and I’ve got to tell you I notice a HUGE difference when I eat something with gluten in it. Personally I still eat oats (only if they’re wheat free) as I find they don’t have a negative effect on me and they are so packed with nutrition. Everything else however, is gluten free. I made a pie! A gluten free, wholefood pie. I’ve been working on a gluten free and dairy free short crust pastry as of late and today caved and used butter 🙈 my belly isn’t thanking me for it. It’s so hard to make a gluten and dairy free (vegan) shortcrust that doesn’t crumble when it’s warm but I’m up for the challenge. I can’t wait to post this recipe once I’ve perfected 1. my shortcrust and 2. my pie latticing skills with said shortcrust. Obviously the second is not essential but it’s nice to eat pretty food right? 
P.S. I still pinch myself that I get to make food like this as part of my job. For so long I felt stuck in a rut, in jobs that didn’t fulfill me, burnt me out and gave me anxiety. Now I’m in a job that I can take at my own pace, caters to my inner passions and allows me to work around my babies. I tell you this because, if you are currently in a job that is causing you to feel anxious and on the brink of burnout, there is hope! All is not lost and there can be a light at the end of the tunnel! .
