Been here a few times now but this was my first time trying the London special - fish and chips! I must say I was quite let down by the ‘fish’, it’s basically just battered tofu with no attempt at a fish flavour (or any flavour at all 😱). I much preferred the ‘fish’ from a food truck called Battered, which I tried in the summer at Hackney Downs Vegan Market. That being said, the chips that came with the fish dish were fantastic!! Mmm mmm mmmm love how fluffy they were on the inside and crispy on the outside. Also, the tartare sauce was great so it wasn’t all doom and gloom

Up at the top is the guac burger - understandably probably the most popular dish at this place. Simple but executed well. However the air baked fries were limp and sad. I’ve had the sweet potato ones before via deliveroo and even after the journey they were still 💯 so definitely go for sweet potato fries!

The dips are incredible!! The beetroot ketchup is bright pink, sweet and delicious! And the chipotle aioli was also v v good
.
I also REALLY enjoyed my juice. I got the Penny Lane which is carrot, turmeric, apple, lemon and ginger. But £4.80 is a bit mental for the teeniest of bottles right?! .

One of my absolute fave meals in China has to be 麻辣烫 (malatang). I’m back in the UK now, and as usual it’s the food I’m missing the most and it’s also the one that is pretty hard to come by in this country

Scroll right to see how it works. You walk into a malatang restaurant, take a bowl and a pair of tongs. Pick out what ever veggies you want - there are so many fun veggies in China to try - lots of greens, different types of gourds depending on the season and of course, my faves, mushrooms! Take your selection over to the counter where it will be weighed. Choose your soup base - mines always vegetable based and not spicy. Then wait for them to cook up this delicious noodle soup! After it’s done you can add sesame paste, coriander and spring onions

Even though the ‘ma la’ in ‘malatang’ actually translates to ‘numbingly spicy’, you can find places that offer different selections of soup bases so you can have it as spicy or mild as you want. The places that offer different soup bases are great for vegans too so to avoid soup made from bones. .

Owing to this close proximity to their natural habitat, the Chinese opened a panda breeding and research centre in this area. It was here where I spent the day cleaning up panda poo, feeding the pandas, watching them play and learning about the conservation efforts
.
Due to deforestation and poaching, the number of wild pandas is now at around 1500. The number is not rising rapidly as female pandas are only fertile for 2 days a year and rarely encounter other pandas with which to mate
.
However, Wolong has come up with a promising way to increase the wild panda numbers through their ‘wild training’. In this training, the mother must have been initially a wild panda herself, and she raises her panda cub in a vast but enclosed semi-wild space in which they must fend for themselves. This way, the panda mother passes on her wild knowledge to the cub, but is still under the eye and background effort of the panda keepers. You may have seen these panda keepers on TV or the internet before, whenever they go into the panda enclosure they must dress in a panda costume that has been smothered in panda pee and poo. This is because if a panda is comfortable with a human, it will never be able to survive in the wild, so they have to disguise themselves as pandas
.
One panda so far, Taotao, has successfully completed wild training and has been thriving in the wild since 2012 🙂🐼
