Thousands of people in remote parts of #Lamu with health services, dozens of young people with opportunities to grow, hundreds of animals cared for... We are a small organization with a mighty ❤ and we couldn't have made this #JourneyForChange without your support. Here's to making an even bigger difference together in 2019!

Today is #UniversalHealthCoverageDay. #SafariDoctors believes where you live should not determine how long you live. We make the #JourneyForChange every month to remote parts of #Lamu, #Kenya to reach those who otherwise struggle to access the care they deserve.

If you're in #Lamu and want to learn more about what we do, stop by our offices in Shela and say hi!

A heart-warming photo of Mama Daktari & little Vona side by side during the last outreach of 2018, watched over by Captain Adamu ❤️ Our boats keep #SafariDoctors moving safely around the #Lamu archipelago, getting #health services where they're needed.

On #HumanRightsDay, we are reminded that access to healthcare is a right, not a privilege. Our #JourneyForChange in remote parts of #Lamu, #Kenya is grounded in this belief. #JoinTheJourney

An Aweer woman waits to be seen at a #SafariDoctors mobile clinic, in a remote village on #Lamu's mainland.

Traditionally, the #Aweer people are hunter-gatherers who primarily live off forest resources. They are the smallest of #Lamu's #indigenous communities, numbering less than 3,000. Many have been displaced due to insecurity towards the border with #Somalia. (Source: LDPI, 2012)

The kizingitini veterinary outreach clinic was packed. We are happy that most animals now only need preventative medication as opposed to treatment against diseases. #preventivemedicine #vaccines #rabies #animalkingdom #communityoutreach #SafariVet🐾 #VetDiaries🐾 #JourneyforChange #onehealth
Making the #JourneyForChange means travelling to places few will, in order to get health services to communities who need them.
This photo was taken by our team near the #Kenya #Somalia border earlier this year, while travelling by road to reach villages on mainland #Lamu.

There's always time for singing and dancing 🎶 The women of Kiangwe village reminded us of that today... The Aweer are #indigenous to this area of mainland #Lamu and are traditionally hunter-gatherers who would live off the sprawling Boni forest's resources. However, many have been displaced due to an ongoing military operation against Al-Shabaab militants towards the border with #Somalia. They are struggling to maintain their traditional way of life but their vibrant culture still shines bright in these moments.

Our work is about making meaningful connections with the marginalized communities we serve, listening to them and meeting their needs as best we can.

Welcome to #December - the month of #giving! 😊 As the year comes to a close, and you begin to think about how you can effectively #giveback to those in need during the #holiday season, consider this list from some of our community partners in #Kenya. #Philanthropy at its best! #expthevillage #responsibletourism #wanderingforgood #donate #domore #connection #familytravel #letstravelkenya #expatlife #traveldeeper
Our #SafariVet reaches up to 10 remote villages in Lamu East each month, treating animals, promoting their welfare & preventing the spread of zoonoses (infectious diseases naturally transmitted between animals & humans). #OneHealth #JourneyForChange #animalrights #animalwelfare #animallover
We still have a way to go on our #JourneyForChange. #SafariDoctors consistently reaches half of Lamu East's remote villages, mainly within the archipelago. Insecurity on the mainland towards #Somalia is a challenge our team continues to navigate. You can #JoinTheJourney and support our work here: http://www.safaridoctors.org/make-a-difference/

Thanks to our wonderful partner @expthevillage for equipping Suleiman with a new wheelchair, which will ease his movement around this remote part of Pate Island. That smile is contagious!
