This stunning painting ‘The Little Girl in Blue’ (1934) by pioneering Indian Modernist Amrita Sher-Gil (painted when the artist was just 21) achieved USD $2.7m over an estimate of USD $1.56-1.7 in #Mumbai yesterday at @Sotheby’s’Boundless India’ sale, establishing a world record for the artist. Born in 1913 in Budapest, Sher-Gil lived in Hungary and India before studying in Paris. There she was exposed to Gauguin and Modigliani, who inspired her to blend her Indian heritage with French modernism, leading the artist to create stylistically simple, yet visually complex portraits of rural Indian life. ‘The Little Girl in Blue’ was painted when the artist was spending time in Amritsar. It featured in her very first solo-exhibition, a show that dramatically changed India's perception of art at the time. Tragically dying age 28, just days before the opening of a major solo-show after becoming seriously ill, Sher-Gil left behind a huge volume of work. And the story goes on. The painting portrays nonagenarian Babit who Amrita went to paint in 1934. Decades later, before the sale in #Mumbai, Babit confronts her younger self again in the painting in a poignant meeting of past and present - a touching reminder of life’s haunting impermanence. #amritashergil #sothebysindia #indianart #modernindianart
