Alamo Square Park, the neighborhood's focal point and namesake, consists of four city blocks at the top of a hill overlooking much of downtown San Francisco, with a number of large and architecturally distinctive mansions along the perimeter, including the "Painted Ladies", a well-known postcard motif. The park is bordered by Hayes Street to the south, Steiner Street to the east, Fulton Street to the north, and Scott Street to the west. Named after the lone cottonwood tree ("alamo" in Spanish), Alamo Hill, was a watering hole on the horseback trail from Mission Dolores to the Presidio in the 1800s. In 1856, Mayor James Van Ness created a 12.7 acre park surrounding the watering hole, creating "Alamo Square". #alamosquare #7paintedladiessanfrancisco #bayarea #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

Part of that community relationship can be seen in the shop's decorations. As you enter Hot Cookie, you'll notice hundreds of photos on the walls of scantily clad men and women wearing Hot Cookie's signature bright red underwear. After first attempting, rather unsuccessfully, to sell t-shirts with the store's logo, they opted to try something different. From the very beginning, the underwear was a huge hit and it continues to be a big draw for the cookie shop. #hotcookie #gaypride #castrodistrict #prideflag #bayarea #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

The Castro's age as a gay mecca began during the late 1960s with the Summer of Love in the neighboring Haight-Ashbury district in 1967. The two neighborhoods are separated by a large mountain, topped by Buena Vista Park. The hippie and free love movements had fostered communal living and free society ideas including housing of large groups of people in hippie communes. Androgyny became popular with men even in full beards as gay hippie men began to move into the area. The 1967 gathering brought tens of thousands of middle-class youth from all over the United States to the Haight which saw its own exodus when well-organized individuals and collectives started to see the Castro as an oasis from the massive influx. Many of the hippies had no way to support themselves or places to shelter. The Haight became drug ridden and violent, chasing off the gay population, who looked for a more stable area to live. #gaypride #castrodistrict #prideflag #bayarea #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

With so many international choices, you should make an effort to seek out the uniquely local tastes, like San Francisco sourdough bread that is still baked daily on Fisherman’s Wharf.

The adjoining museum explains how the Boudin family of French bakers came to San Francisco with the gold rush of 1849 and feared the climate had ruined their “mother dough.” Just the opposite: the wild yeast cultures had created a classic sourdough taste that customers love. You can watch the bakers in action, or just savor the smell of fresh bread. #clamchowder #boudin #fishermanswharfsanfrancisco #yerbabuena #sanfrancisco #bayarea #downtown #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #backpackerlife #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

Coit Tower, also known as the Lillian Coit Memorial Tower, is a 210-foot (64 m) tower in the Telegraph Hill neighborhood of San Francisco, California. The tower, in the city's Pioneer Park, was built in 1933 using Lillie Hitchcock Coit's bequest to beautify the city of San Francisco; at her death in 1929 Coit left one-third of her estate to the city for civic beautification. The tower was proposed in 1931 as an appropriate use of Coit's gift. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on January 29, 2008. #coittower #yerbabuena #sanfrancisco #bayarea #downtown #skyscrapers #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #backpackerlife #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #solotravel #travelphotography #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

The name of Sausalito comes from Spanish sauzalito, meaning "small willow grove", from sauce "willow" + collective derivative -al meaning "place of abundance" + diminutive suffix -ito; with orthographic corruption from z to s due to seseo. Early variants of the name were Saucelito, San Salita, San Saulito, San Salito, Sancolito, Sancilito, Sousolito, Sousalita, Sousilito, Sausilito, and Sauz Saulita.

It is sometimes claimed that Sausalito was named for the district in Valparaíso, Chile where the bandit Joaquín Murrieta was born. Murrieta was the leader of bandits who settled at the northern end of the future Golden Gate bridge after being banned from San Francisco in the bandit wars. However, this theory cannot be true because Murrieta was from Mexico, not Chile, and because he did not arrive in California until the Gold Rush around 1849. The Rancho Saucelito had already been granted to William Richardson in 1838. #sausalito #bayarea #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

From a vista at the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge, this life-size bronze statue of a sailor overlooks the San Francisco Bay for a view of San Francisco. Next to the sailor is his duffel bag along side a stanchion.

The statue, a replica of the lone sailor, represents a sailor's last view of the West Coast as he sails out for duty at sea.

Plaque reads:
The Lone Sailor
This is a memorial to everyone who ever sailed out the Golden Gate in the service of their Country – in the Navy, the Marine Corps, the Coast Guard, the Merchant Marine.

A ship heading for sea passes directly by this spot at the northern end of the Golden Gate. Here the Sailor feels the first long roll of the sea, the beginning of the endless horizon that leads to the far Pacific.

There is one last chance to look back at the city of San Francisco, shining on its hills, one last chance to look back at the coastline of the United States, one last chance to look back at home.

Thousands and thousands of American seafarers have sailed past this place, in peace and war, to defend this Country and its sea frontiers. Many of them never returned. This monument is dedicated to the ordinary Sailors and Marines who sailed from this place and did their duty.

Bas relief sculptors commemorating the individual sea services are located across from the statue. Approximately 1.5 million men and women shipped out from San Francisco during WWII.
This statue is a replica of the U.S. Navy Memorial on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.

Though it’s often assumed that they’ve always been referred to as the Seven Painted ladies, this name actually only took hold in 1978 when authors Elizabeth Pomada and Michael Larsen wrote a book about the homes. In fact, Painted Ladies doesn’t refer to these home in particular, but to any set of homes made in either the Victorian or Edwardian architectural style that has at least colors or more. #7paintedladiessanfrancisco #bayarea #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies

The Castro Theatre is a popular San Francisco movie palace which became San Francisco Historic Landmark #100 in September 1976. Located at 429 Castro Street, in the Castro district, it was built in 1922 with a Spanish Colonial Baroque façade that pays homage—in its great arched central window surmounted by a scrolling pediment framing a niche—to the recently rebuilt basilica of Mission Dolores nearby. Its designer, Timothy L. Pflueger, also designed Oakland's Paramount Theater and other movie theaters in California in that period. The theater has over 1,400 seats (approx 800 downstairs and 600 in the balcony). The theater's ceiling is the last known leatherette ceiling in the United States and possibly the world. Another leatherette ceiling was unfortunately demolished just a few years ago. To make the ceiling look as though it is leather requires a special technique regarded as lost today. #castrotheater #castrodistrict #prideflag #bayarea #sanfrancisco #california #usa #wanderingphotographers #wanderingfeet #travelgram #traveler #travelingourplanet #travelphotography #backpacker #travelawesome #goexplore #wonderfulplaces #openmyworld #wanderlust #adventureislife #roamtheplanet #travellifestyle #travelphotography #travelsnaps #travelette #travelstoke #travellife #traveladdictedladies
