Summer shenanigans - things I/we have done this summer: - eaten fancy ice cream at the food hall. - walked on the beach.
- seen fireworks.
- met new people.
- attended a parade.
- flown on a plane. - swam in a pool.
- gone to a museum.
- drank amazing iced coffees and cold brews almost daily.
- practiced yoga (not enough).
.
.
.
This was a scene from the Park Hill 4th of July Parade. Rad @denverlibrary book mobile was there. Love our local library system💗📚👏🏼!

Few things beat a free fireworks show. And we definitely got some of the best seats in the house. 💥💥💥

Growing up, whenever I heard about the American Dream, this is more or less what I imagined. Living in a “safe” neighborhood, one where you actually know your neighbors, where everyone gets their own room (something I didn’t have myself till I was 15). Cookouts and parades on the 4th of July. Having the luxury of leisure time, of pursuing dreams. Actually being able to come up in the world, own a car, buy a house. As I got older, I began to learn more about the ugly side of our nation and it’s history. The racism and misogyny and the way those at the top do all they can to keep the rest of us at the bottom, unable to make most of our dreams a reality. Still, I’d like to think that there’s still some hope for this experiment we call the United States. .
.
.
While we are living in dark times, I see the way so many around me pull together to not only make their own dreams come true, but to help others achieve theirs. Today, thanks to the generous hearts of many, we raised enough money to pay for the bonds of two more immigrant moms. It was the most patriotic act I can think of. So maybe the American Dream isn’t totally dead. Maybe it’s just not entirely what we thought it was. Maybe the dream is simply to keep helping others to have the same opportunities that those of us born here have. And maybe that’s enough for now.

Happy Independence Day ✊🏽✊🏾✌🏼

I loved living in Florida for the proximity to beaches. I love living in Colorado because the mountains are my backyard. But where the mountains meet the shore, few things compare. Puerto Vallarta is one such place where you get the best of both. This was the view from the rooftop pool (and sushi bar) at the @hiltonpvr and definitely one of the best views I got to enjoy while there. My only regret was not having gone up for a cocktail one of those nights. But I guess we always have to save something for next time 😉

What do you prefer? Flat lands and calm beaches? Rocky mountain with rivers and lakes in between? Or are you like me, where you simply can’t live without either? 🌊🏔🏖🏞🤷🏻‍♀️

Sometimes the devil is in the details, and at the Hilton Puerto Vallarta, a detail that truly stands out is the use of various tile designs. From the shower walls to the hallway and elevator floors, these intricate, colorful patterns can be found all around the property.

What kinds of small details do you love most from hotels? Their selection of bath and body products? The hotel stationary? Guest room lighting? The robes and slippers? Let me know in the comments👇🏽.

Go to any waterfront city in Latin America, and you just might find a malecón, or a promenade of sorts made of stone or cement. The malecón tends to be a popular attraction and a great meeting place to hang out with friends or even go on a date. The malecón in Puerto Vallarta is certainly among the most well known.
.
.
.
Here we see one of the most popular works, and actually the oldest piece having been created in 1976. The “Caballero Del Mar” by Rafael Zamarripa (of neighboring Guadalajara) shows a young boy riding a sea horse—a whimsical image potentially inspired by the young boys who would fish in the area. There are plenty of other beautiful, magical sculpture to be found all along the malecón, so if you go make sure to carve out time to take photos of or with them.

What are some of your favorite spots to scope out public art in Mexico? .

P.S. This was only a short cab ride away from the @hiltonpvr and totally worth checking out!

Bright prints. Stunning, intricate tiles. Thoughtful details. A private pool. This was where I got to spend that last few days. The Hilton Puerto Vallarta was a solid home away from home. While there, I got to enjoy a tour of the city, multiple multi-course meals, some shopping in the mercados, a phenomenal massage, relaxing beach time, and of course, plenty of sunshine. .

Did I mention I finally made it to @voodoodoughnuts on Colfax? @jennythepetsitter and I made a quick stopped and picked up this box of sweets. Amazing flavors. Plus they have a Miami-themed doughnut right now I have to try (305 till I die and all that).

The boys spent some time in this little reading nook located at the @ggclubandresort and found a great coffee table book with photos of Colorado’s past. Absolutely love looking through old photographs, plus I have a fascination with the books hotels often provide for guests to peruse through. I don’t often get much time to read or look through books these days (ah, the digital life!) but when on a mini-break, it’s nice to take eyes off the screen and onto some pages.

Do you normally stop and check out the books at hotel “libraries”? Made any interesting discoveries this way? Would love to hear about it (or about any hotels with solid book selections!)

Saw some instadesserts and realized I hadn’t posted about @jennythepetsitter and I’s visit to @littlemanicecream here in Denver. I’ve passed by here before and seen a line down the block, but fortunately on this day (Friday around noon I think), we only had one person ahead. Jenny opted for this vegan chocolate and I got the orange creamsicle ice cream sandwich. Both lived up to the hype, and sitting around people-watching in the shade was a nice way to spend the time.

This is the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, which consist of some relocated Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloan ruins from the Four Corners area (Utah, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico). The Anasazi people lived around 1200 BC to 1300 AD, and the stones featured in these ruins were originally found in Cortez (a town in Southwest Colorado). In the early 1900s, they were shipped to Maintou Springs (just outside Colorado Springs), and rebuilt to create this museum and attraction that resembles the original dwellings. Now, folks are free to roam in and out of the dwellings and learn more about what it was like for the Anasazi to live in such places. .
.
.
Our visit was during a particularly hot day (nearing 100 degrees Fahrenheit), but it was significantly cooler inside the dwellings, so it’s not hard to imagine why they built their homes in this way. If you’re staying in the Colorado Sprigs/Manitou Springs area, I highly recommend a visit.

There are a number of dining options at the @ggclubandresort to choose from. My favorite, hands down, was the Grand View Dining Room. Why exactly? Well, if you sit outside long enough, you’re bound to meet some adorable little bunnies! Yep, that’s right. If you look beyond into this field, you’ll notice tiny grey balls of fur that just so happen to be rabbits. They hop all around and occasionally get very close and munch on flowers. It was an amazing surprise during our dinner (while kiddo enjoyed the Kids Club—a welcome and affordable resource at the resort). Seriously, if you’re looking to impress a date (who happens to enjoy beautiful views and bunnies), this is a great way to go. .
.
.
The restaurant bases their menu on locally and sustainable grown, humanely treated ingredients and so the menu changes. Hence, I can’t recall the exact name@of my dish except that it consisted of piquillo peppers stuffed with quinoa and I believe some kind of cheese or cream plus fresh greens over it and it was all kinds of lovely (and vegetarian, of course). My partner enjoyed the filet mignon with some puréed potatoes and asparagus which he also happily devoured. The Grand View also offers breakfast and lunch (but it appears best times to see the rabbits might be early morning and dusk).

Colorado Springs, home of the U S Olympic Training Facility, the Air Force Academy, Pike’s Peak, and the Libertarian Party, has a much different vibe than its neighbor to the north, Denver. Slightly higher elevations, much wider roads, and closer proximity to the mountains...and this, of course. Not entirely sure what the deal is with the Humpty Dumpty-esque sculpture but it worked out perfectly. That blue ‘67 Mustang wasn’t too shabby, either.

Garden of the Gods is one of Colorado’s most popular public parks and landmarks, and (according to Wiki) has been visited by people since 1330 BC. Many claim it is also a powerful energy vortex, an important site for meditation and other energy work. While staying here at the @ggclubandresort, I had the chance to enjoy a biofuels energy therapy session with Dr. Charlene Wang. It’s not something I’ve ever tried, but I will say it left me feeling an internal buzz. I felt relaxed right away as she began her work and it reminded me of the importance of meditation in my life. The doc recommended meditating at the park, so I’ve definitely got to give it a shot.

Recently got to show one of my very best friends @jennythepetsitter around Colorado. This was us over at Confluence Park / the Cherry Creek Trail on an especially sunny day—definitely one of my favorite spots here in Denver.

Having a friend from back home here in town was a great experience. On the one hand, it reminded me to go outside more, to explore more (even if it’s on my own). She reminded me of who I am, or have been—someone who loves new adventures and doesn’t mind doing it solo. She also reminded me that I still need to keep putting myself out there. I’ve made a small handful of friends and acquaintances since I moved here nearly two years ago but I’m awful about making plans or following up (and the winters/flu season don’t help). Hoping to put myself out there more during these especially sun-shiny days. And hey, if you’re in town (whether you live here or just want to visit and need an inflatable bed and a friendly face), hit me up 🙃

Nothing like getting out into the mountains for fresh air and solitude. Drove up Squaw Pass yesterday and stopped by a picnic site to remember once again why we’re living in Colorado. Saw a beautiful elk on the way and hung out with a couple of grey jays (also known as “camp robbers” thanks to their incessant attempts at stealing some of our food—but I held my ground). It was a nice way to spend part of Memorial Day Weekend.

Speaking of which...Today we remember those lives we’ve lost in battles past. But it’s also important to recognize that it would be best not to have to lose so many individuals to war in the first place. That war is a terrible thing to be avoided at all costs. That odds are most fallen soldiers would have preferred to live a longer life with their loved ones. Remember and honor your lost service members, and do what you can to help prevent any more lives lost by voting for those who would not seek more war, for those who want peace and prefer to work on negotiations rather than sending 18-year-old teenagers off to war zones with a gun and a license to kill.
