Ah, the old flickeroo eh! This is the quality of fitment traditional smoke fitting achieves. For a party trick I once windmilled a virgin £1k shoulder plane...over a rough concrete floor...in front of a crowd. #whatcouldpossiblygowrong .

Measuring the moisture content of very dense woods is beyond the scope of most moisture meters. High volume industrial outfits will often have their own lab at the factory, where they will use this method to measure the MC with absolute certainty no matter the species.
.
A sample, (or samples) is/are taken from a suitable area, ideally from the thickest portion in the centre of a board. The sample is weighed then put into an oven. Bake and re-weigh the sample at regular intervals until it looses no more weight. Record the first and last reading then use the formula shown to calculate the sample MC. Jobs a good’un 👍🏻
.
The best thing about this method is it can be carried out with very basic equipment; some form of oven and a cheap pair of drug scales are more than adequate.
.
For reference, this piece of Boxwood was baked at 160°C for about 2 1/2 hours. Don’t go much hotter than that though or the wood will char! Timber kindly donated by the ever generous @arnold_richard 😊.

Close, but no cigar. Pretty sure this wasn’t a cold pour, as that would have left a C shape. I’m betting this was trapped air in the mould due to improper venting?
.
The setup so far: Sand cast via the Delf method with fine oil bonded facing sand, fine graphite mould wash, assembled flask pre heated to 200°C. I can’t measure the temperature of the bronze because my probe is too big, but my eye says its on the hotter end of the scale, say ‘dancing’ surface hot.
.
Any tips ladies and gentlemen? .

Something a little different today! Two very good friends asked me if I would make them their wedding bands. Naturally I said yes (which may have been followed with awwww! ☺️). This is the grooms brass pattern that will be used to make the casting mould, which molten gold will be poured into. A few videos of the process are in my Story ⬆️. .

Each OSM #makersknife comes with two blades; one blade a mirror honed double bevel, the other left blank to be custom ground by the owner. All are made from Sheffield’s finest, hardened and tempered in our digitally controlled furnaces for a sharp, durable edge.

Turn the sound up!
For weeks now I’ve been hearing the crunch of something being nibbled up in the ‘shop ceiling panels. Naturally I assumed it was a mouse, I know they are up there because one ate a pipistrelle bat I was trying to mummify (🤬). Imagine my surprise to find this little beetle happily gnawing away! Can anyone shed any light? It’s about 3/4” long. Central England.

Going through a box of cutters today I came across this set, an early attempt at mechanised scroll wedges. I used to carve these completely by hand, but it is difficult tedious work keeping every contour straight, parallel and true (read not profitable.) Though these shop made cutters are crude in comparison to the commercially ground end mill, when sharp they leave a very smooth finish, particularly on exotics. I use a slightly different system now but this was still a great ending to a ‘....hmmm I wonder....’ kind of moment 🤓. .

Sure I could use off the shelf bronze screws, but then the colour wouldn’t match. Neither would the quality. Continuity is a big thing for me 👌🏻

OSM Makers Knife: thumb screw detail. A lot of thought goes into making my products durable and dependable. The easy road is often the wrong road. Even if properly cared for threads of this size in brass would probably strip out in under a decade. Not good enough in my book, so I took the time to develop a steel-on-steel union that will outlast several lifetimes. Better.

Hot like lava 🌋 At the charity show early in the morning I spied a plank of something interesting leaning up against a wall. Assuming it was a donation I immediately and boldly scrawled ‘OLLIES-DIBS!!’ On it to claim ownership 🤓 Well, turns out it wasn’t a donation, @bill.sarah.planemaker had bought it up to pass onto Shane of @skelton_saws. Damn! I didn’t find this out till much later, and everyone had a good titter at my sheepish but crestfallen face haha. Shane kindly took pity on my ‘loss’ and sawed a fat portion off the end...yay! ☺️. If you’re not familiar with @skelton_saws you really ought to be.... in my not-so-humble-opinion Shane makes the finest handsaws in the world. Bar none. .

Probably the most life changing event in my shop was buying and installing a surface grinder. I abhor lapping with ever fibre of my being! Getting hardened steel flat, looking crisp *and* in a timely manner cannot be done by hand. .
My mind is a restless one (understatement) so I’m constantly making new patterns, trying to push the boundaries of good design and generally tinkering, all whilst maintaining a fixed fine quality. Making everything in-house gives me the flexibility to peruse these aims without compromise, having to wait yonks for someone else to finish my part, or needing to place a minimum order. .
