I was 39 years old when I was diagnosed with breast cancer...
My regular doctor that I had been seeing for years dismissed my concerns for hormonal changes... ensuring me I had no concerns at my age... and no visible signs of a lump or anything sinister. 💚
But after insisting on a mammogram and ultrasound and weeks of tests and drs visits... my worst fears were confirmed and I was told I needed an immediate mastectomy to remove a large 7cm x 5cm malignant tumour.
I remember the day it was removed so clearly... I had so much fear that it had spread, and so much fear that my 4 young children would not see me grow old. So scared for what would happen next.
Unfortunately breast cancer doesn’t allow you to chose bravery... it chooses YOU.
But it was removed, margins were clear... it hadn’t spread and what followed was 12 months of chemo, radiation and more and more drs appointments. My children watched me go from my happy usual healthy self, to a quieter sullen grey version of their Mum. Watching them watch me was honestly the hardest part of my journey.
But 3 years on... day by day... I have rebuilt myself, my confidence and my resilience to anything BC has thrown my way. 💚
We get “One life... one chance”. So, this year I have chosen to be SO BRAVE. I was selected as the first ever @sobraveproject Model Ambassador here in Adelaide to help promote breast cancer awareness in young women; highlighting their core message that young women under 40 get breast cancer too. 💚
On March 15th this year, I was body painted from head to toe; to be featured in the stunning So Brave 2019 Calendar to help to raise vital funds for breast cancer research. 💚
We all have our own ‘So Brave’ stories... stories that make us who we are... stories of ‘Brave’ loved ones... stories that sometimes go untold. Don’t be afraid to stand tall and tell your #mysobravestory . You might just reach one person who understands exactly where you are. exactly where you are.
💚Share your bravery. .
