A piece by Alexia Diaz:
Like a hot seatbelt hitting skin
on a simmering summer day
Leaving a welt
Until one day
tired of avoiding my reflection
I stared at the stranger in the mirror
Scarred, cracked, beaten down by
And I screamed “NO MORE!!”
I screamed so loudly that the mirror fragmented into a million tiny particles collapsing into a pile of dust onto the floor.
And In that pile
laid a small diamond
I picked it up
I brushed it off
And saw beautiful little faces looking back at me.
Driving home from work I always pass a liquor store with a beautiful mural of flying birds on the side. I think that’s ironic..sad, or something. I listen to ‘Empty’ by Ray LaMontange at least once a day and let myself marinate in it. I wish I could tell him that his words trickle into my spine and cause me to sit up straight, because I swear, he knows me, it’s an eerie thing. I think about things less because work is busier, but when I get home, the silence is louder. I’ve never tasted this brand of darkness. It’s beautifully tragic, sitting in the waiting area, like a skeleton waiting for a heart transplant.
On my 3 year anniversary working for RWJ Fitness and Wellness I was given the best promotion, to take over as the acting General Manager of our Carteret location.
I didn’t want to be serving tables or bartending for the rest of my life and I took a chance, worked my tail off, and now I’m a walking testimony to anyone who doubts their ability to rise above. An ex heroin addict, now a GM of a medically based fitness and wellness company.
If you ask, and put in the footwork, God will pull you out of the wreckage of your past. STRIVE to better yourself.

From my new book, Medium Rare- link in bio::
The rain brings out my best depression
God sits in my passenger seat
I talk to Him about how I doubt His goodness,
but I talk to Him nonetheless
some days are gold,
some days are filth
the car behind us
runs over my limbic system
I like it that way
destroying it myself is harder
the days will go on
but some of them will be spent
curled up in the bathtub
the realest version of myself.
