Yogis are known for their non-violent ways but why are many yoga poses named after warriors (Warrior I, Warrior II & Warrior III)? According to yogic philosophy, when we stand in a “warrior” pose, we are taking the stance of Virabhadra, a fierce warrior who was at Shiva’s command in the Bhagavad Gita. In Warrior I, Virabhadra arrives at the party with two swords in his hands ⚔️ In Warrior II, he sights his target, Daksha. Finally in Warrior III, he finds & decapitates his opponent with his swords...

At first glance, this story seems quite brutal, but Virabhadra’s battle serves as metaphor for our emotional battles. As yogis, we often overlook negative emotions, believing we need to eradicate these emotions from our lives. Because eliminating hardship from our lives isn’t feasible, it’s inevitable that we will experience anger, jealousy or bitterness from time to time. We all experience little battles throughout the day whether they be with our partners, friends, family or bosses. And that’s okay! Being a “yogi” isn’t about existing in a permanently blissful state; it’s about successfully navigating the often complicated world of human emotions. We become true warriors when we understand how to fight our battles with the proper weapons - love, compassion & patience - even when we don’t feel like it ♥️

I used to believe there were two types of people: logical & creative ✨ And as much as I wanted to be creative, I believed I didn’t have a creative bone in my body because I didn’t know how to draw, paint, sculpt or design. However, after reading, “The Science of Getting Rich” by Wallace Wattles, I realized this was a big misconception I had about creativity.

Fulfillment is essential for a happy life ♥️ Yet, we often believe we’ll finally realize fulfillment once we’ve achieved major success in our health, relationships or careers. We think (myself included!), “Once I get X Y Z, then I’ll be happy.” However, this mindset is an illusion. Why? Because as soon as we achieve our goals, we systematically create new ones without taking the time to celebrate our triumphs. Anxiety... It’s something I never thought I would struggle with… until I did. Like many of you, I wasn’t born anxious. It was something that developed with time. As responsibilities, competition & comparison intensified, the more anxious I became. Everyday, I woke up riddled with worry, stress & tension. But I justified my anxiety by reciting an endless list of responsibilities I needed to accomplish

I continued to feel this way even when I didn’t have anything to do or accomplish. That’s when I knew something wasn’t right. I realized I was a prisoner of my own mind. Tortured by my past & future. The thoughts, criticism & insecurities wouldn’t stop. I was literally gasping for air, drowning in my insecurities & insurmountable fears. Life was closing in on me. Despite the smiles, I felt trapped. Lost, alone & hopeless.

Although meditation was the last thing I wanted to do, deep down I knew it was my only way to salvation. Like many of you, I resisted meditation because I thought it was about clearing the mind. And to me, that was fucking impossible! But as @avajohanna so eloquently wrote, “Meditation isn’t about clearing the mind. It’s about exploring your head as a visitor, curious at every thought vision or story that plays on the movie screen that is your mind” ✨ Once I learned to dance with my thoughts, I discovered that they don’t define WHO I TRULY AM.

Thoughts come & go like the ocean waves, but the essence of WHO YOU ARE will never change. You’re so much more than the compilation of your thoughts. Even if it’s for 10 minutes a day, close your eyes & connect with your breath. As thoughts come & go, explore them with curiosity. Notice their origin in the mind & body. With each passing exhale, challenge them by returning your awareness to the present moment -  your breath, body or sounds around you - and ask yourself, “WHO AM I?” You’ll realize that you’re not defined by your mental health disorder. You are love, courage & interconnectedness 💗 This is your True Self.

Last week, I was feeling moody, anxious & negative. No matter what I did, I simply couldn’t shake these feelings. Partly because this energy was in my external environment.

Although I had a lot of work to get done, I knew I had to take a break & change my environment. I decided to go “earthing” - walk barefoot on the Earth ✨ Although I usually go to my happy place - the beach - or go on a hike 🌊, none of these options were available to me, so I decided to go “earthing” around a local farm.
•
After walking around for a few minutes, my mood began to change & creativity began to flow. Was it the greenery, quiet, sunniness & woody smells, or did something else lift my mood? 🌱 According to science, the Earth carries an abundance of negatively charged ions 🌎 When we wear shoes or walk on man-made surfaces, our bodies are unable to absorb these mood-enhancing antioxidants; however, walking barefoot allows our bodies to absorb large amounts of these negative ions until our body is the same negative electrical potential as the Earth, making us calm, positive & peaceful ✌🏼

For many years, I’ve been hiding who I truly am. I feared that I wouldn’t be loved or accepted by my family, friends & society. I wanted to be different - to be myself, but in the past, when I was myself, I was scolded, made fun of & made to feel like an outcast. So I became one of them - I conformed. By conforming, I allowed others to rob me of my uniqueness, my light. And whether I was conscious of it or not, I was unhappy, self-loathing & even mean-spirited at times. I started tearing others down because unconsciously I thought, “Why should they be happy expressing who they are when I am not allowed to express who I am?” Like many of us, I was lost, confused & desperate to be loved & accepted ♥️

Since practicing yoga, I’ve decided to stop hiding & step into Who I Truly Am. I realized we should never tear each other down because we ALL need to radiate what makes each & everyone of us so special, so we can heal our collective wounds. We should never compromise who we are just because someone thinks we are too this or too that. But more importantly, no one robs us of our identity, we rob ourselves - not only our identity but also happiness, love & self-acceptance - by making the choice to conform to others’ opinions of us. When we conform, we hand over our power to the haters.

So take back your power & tear away all the masks 🎭 Radiate your youness and encourage others to be their most authentic selves everyday because this how we heal✨This is true bliss. If someone says otherwise, talk to them about it, ignore them or even distance yourself from them. Sometimes it’s scary to go against the norm, but always stay true to yourself because you are MORE than enough just the way are. You are meant to stand out. You are meant to be different 😍
