It’s everyday, in our lives. We need to care about it, for us and for the future generations.

Today is November 25th, the International Day against violence on Women. During this week, here in Italy, we have been discussing this day and the abuse and violence that scourge not just our country, but the world. Despite the information and the efforts of many women and men to raise public awareness on the topic, we continue suffering from attacks by the authorities. In various cities in Italy the pro-life movements and committees have targeted Law 194, trying to deprive women of their right to abort, a right that has been conquered with blood, sweat, and tears, the memory of which is still too recent (May 22th 1978). Not only this, but at this very moment there are different laws, one of them being the famous DDL 735, being proposed by the Senator Pillon, that would modify the law 56 on the custody of children, creating a forced mediation even in violence’s cases, exposing women and children on continue abuses from partners, husbands and fathers. Because of this, women all over Italy have decided to go down in to the square yesterday, to claim what is theirs, what is OURS, what belongs to us as human beings: our right to a life where we don’t have to be afraid that our children are going to be killed by our partner, a life where we don’t have to suffer from continued violence where we are killed, a life where we don’t have to look behind us while we walk alone in the street at night, a life where we don’t have to feel uncomfortable at work for unsolicited advances, that we can’t fight because we fear losing our job. For 3000 years you have tortured us, brutalized, raped, denigrated, excluded; you have robbed us of our freedom and our choice; you have convinced us that we are not like you, that we are inferior, suitable only to procreate and look after the family. Well, now we say ENOUGH. We take back everything that you took from us, we rebel to this patriarchal system and yes, you should be afraid, because we’ll be ruthless. But don’t worry, we won’t do the same to you: we won’t lower ourselves to the same level, because the world that we want is a world free from every form of oppression, inequality and violence!

It happens more often than we think, or we want to admit. Standing for all women, not just in the International Day against Violence on Women, on 25th November, but everyday.
