I wasn’t sure if I wanted to share this with the world. This moment that was very intimate between me and myself. But in honor of my last night in Chiang Mai, I am sharing in the hopes that my words can help remind all of you that you deserve the world.
I was captivated looking at this temple of Wat Chedi Luang and in a moment of mesmerized, self-empowering reflection wrote down this promise to myself: .
“My promise to this moment. A moment where I am looking upwards to a worn down but strong temple from the 15th century in northern Thailand. I promise I will always demand what I deserve. They said ‘You are strong, Miss USA.” And I am. I am alone standing in a country unlike my own in every way. But I’m here. I’m here to learn. I’m here to grow. If this temple can withstand as much as it has, I can weather through anything that hurts me. My promise to this moment is that I will be grateful. I will be aware. I’ll have nothing but the highest respect for myself. I will live a life I deserve and I will achieve this by recognizing the true heights worth my merit. I will learn to control my feelings without compromising the beauty in emotions. My heart, my honesty, my empathy and my compassion may make me appear to be vulnerable or emotional. But no- these are my strengths. They are what make me fierce, passionate, driven, loving and worthy of this moment. I will never forget how strong I am. Or that I deserve legendary moments and people in my life. And I will always show gratitude for those people and moments who touch my heart. I won’t forget this promise. I can’t forget this promise. Katie, this I promise you.”
So often it’s what we weren’t expecting that becomes the most fulfilling. Whether it’s a seemingly mislocated stunning mosque facade in a bland alleyway or any of the unexpected surprises life throws us along our path. Whichever it is, it’s always a reminder to remain hungry for the unknown and to appreciate the unexpected.
