Swipe Photo - Such a beautiful market in Surabaya, where layers of life and the kindness of these women welcomed me in my curiosity. We’re only days away from the start of the storytelling workshop I’m hosting with @viiphoto colleague @lindabournane in Yogyakarta, so pleased to be back in this most wonderful land in Central Java, Indonesia. Also, thank you to so many who keep kindly messaging with warm welcomes...yes, it’s wonderful to be back home.

Have been told by a few editors that an arm or a hand tends to randomly appear in some of my photographs. Maybe they’re right, even when wandering through a market next to the hotel here in one of my favorite cities...Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Important - #freeshahidulalam - My friend, Shahidul Alam @shahidul001, photographer, activist and founder of Drik and Pathshala South Asian Media Institute, was taken away from his residence in Dhaka on August 5. 2018, by a group of 30-50 individuals claiming to be from the Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police. It is thought his detention is linked to his posts on FB related to the ongoing student protests. Shahidul has been seen during his first hearing today, August 6, in Dhaka, apartment badly beaten. It is wrong when Shahidul exercised his right to freedom of expression, only to be treated in this brutal way. Please share so collectively we can work for releasing Shahidul Amal and other journalists detained in Bangladesh. Thank you so much.
We passed through so many stations in Pakistan, countless hours waiting in others for the next train towards Sibi. Through such a blur of departure halls I can no longer remember where this was, other than resting quietly for awhile waiting for a train with these fellows who found random places to rest from the scorching afternoon heat under a wobbly ceiling fan. If any of my Pakistani friends know what town this station is in, please do leave a comment and I will update the geotag in the morning. Thank you so much.

The first train we took began in Chaman heading towards Quetta, four or five small, beautifully antiquated set of railway cars traveling eastward through Baluchistan. We sipped chai with these fellows, all of us resting a bit thereafter while the heat from western Pakistan poured through the opened windows of this slow moving, packed train.

Thought to go a bit further into the Pakistan through India railway story I did a few years ago for Time, the first photographs made when Andrew Marshal @journotopia and I started this month long story that began here at the Pakistan/Afghanistan border. Was a rather depressive scene...the worry and desperate faces of women, children and men, held back by Pakistani boarder guards when wanting to cross, without documents, to sell scrap metal in Pakistan, a dire need to somehow make a living. Strangest, most saddest things humans create are borders. Invisible lines that do little other than divide us.

This was the most beautifully powerful, spiritually enlightening ceremony I’d ever witnessed...deep in prayer, deepest in trance within an underground cave on Nusa Penida, a mystical island off the coast of Bali, Indonesia. Some fear entering into such depths of faith, of belief, either within themselves or in life. Nothing could be more contrary to imagine, reaching such a heightened state of awareness, of being. From my years living in Bali, in thanks and kindness to all who welcomed me.

Swipe - Tonight while organizing the archive, I came upon a story I did in Pakistan for Time magazine, a railway journey through all of the country, onward by rail through northeastern India. While on the outskirts of Quetta near the border with Afghanistan, I came upon these three men, railways workers taking a break from the heat, resting in a tunnel. A simple moment at the beginning of that month long assignment during the days when Time did long form storytelling. I remember these fellows being very soft spoken, kind and hard working, needing a respite from the relenting heat of Baluchistan.

That late afternoon in Ethiopia, Momina, made me a most delicious cup of coffee. Gently upon her face was hurud or ird in Ahmeric, a mustard yellow powder that comes from the Ird tree, used to keep skin moisturized from the scorching Afar sun that heavily warms this area in the Horn of Africa. She was making the coffee while I took this portrait. In such welcoming, I talked with Momina and her mother while sipping a cup, sharing feelings about their nomadic life, the simple pleasures after a long day tending their livestock in the Afar region of northern Ethiopia.
