🇦🇺 It was my sincere privilege to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day today at the Manly Cenotaph.
Did you know that Vietnam Veterans day was originally known as Long Tan Day, chosen to commemorate the men of D Company, 6RAR who fought in the battle of Long Tan in 1966. On that day, 108 Australian and New Zealand soldiers fought a pitched battle against over 2,000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong troops in a rubber plantation not far from the small village of Long Tan.
Congratulations once again to the team at @beachescouncil for their organisation of the commemoration.
Thank you Stella Maris, Manly and Manly Village Public School for supporting this important event. #vietnamveterans
🐬🐳 LOCAL MARINE ENVIRONMENT PROTECTIONS TO EXPAND!
Since being elected I have advocated fiercely for our marine environment. 💙 The draft policy released today recommends Cabbage Tree Sanctuary grow from 18 hectares to 52 hectares! 🐳
The draft marine strategy outlines increased protections for @friendsofcabbagetreebay and areas of North Harbour (round near Fairlight). This will help to conserve our marine environment for future generations, whilst protecting our vital eco-tourism industry.
After significant consultation, the draft proposal is to extend the current reserve to 250 metres north-west of Blue Fish Point and reinforce that anchoring in seagrass habitat in Cabbage Tree Bay is restricted.
These plans are not about excluding fishing or recreational boating. I know that Blue Fish Point is popular for recreational shore and boat-based fishing and for scuba diving, and so a special purpose zone would allow that sort of activity to continue.
I am grateful to key conservation stakeholders – the
@naturensw, our very own @cabbagetreebay and @marineconservation.au for their contribution and support.

So a week ago some larrikin wrote a story about an obscure piece of legislation that entitled all Aussie citizens to a portrait of the Queen.
Since that article I've been (incorrectly) bombarded with requests for a portrait of the Her Majesty. 🤦♂️ Unfortunately, the one I'm standing next to is not the one you are entitled to (it's a fair bit smaller). This amazing painting is situated in the @nswparliament. You're more than welcome to come say G'day to me at Parliament and I'll give you a personal tour! 🇦🇺 What I can do however, is proudly supply your organisation, school, sporting club with a NSW State Flag! And I would be most happy to do so. (If you're still keen on the portrait of the Queen, you'll have to ask my Federal colleague the Hon. @tonyabbottmhr (he's still got a few I think 😉). It even made the Canadians laugh: https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/australians-pepper-politicians-requests-portraits-queen-elizabeth-ii-n899521

In case you missed it...🏡🏡🏡three properties on North Head will be saved from private rental market and continue to be used for community services. 💥 (Sorry for the long post...but it's an important one). In my maiden speech I said…“I am here to speak up for the vulnerable and voiceless in our community”. Yes, a broad statement. However this announcement went a small way in achieving that.
With support from Minister for Disability Services @raywilliamsmp we announced three residential properties at North Head Sanctuary will not be leased as private rentals and instead a plan for long term community use will be developed by local charity, health services and not-for-profit organisations.
In the past these three beautiful properties have been providing respite for carers of family and friends with mental illness. After the closure of those services I was asked to step in and help develop a solution to ensure the continued provision of community services.
There was no way I was prepared to let these properties go and I am grateful to the Harbour Trust and their amazing team for being such good partners and allowing us time to develop a proposal to continue providing these vital services.
This will be an amazing hub for volunteers and community programs.
So what’s next?
With Community Northern Beaches, carers and other community services– we will work over the next three months to develop a business case and long term model for the future use of these properties, to ensure they stay in the community’s hands. 👍🏻 Last but not least, thank you to a very special Katherine who brought this issue to my attention.
You are a true community hero. This one is for you and all the carers!
First ever @city2surf! ✅ What a cracker. Proud to wear my @hellomanlyofficial t-shirt around ‘Bondi’ 😉 at the end. So many people to have a chat to like my mate here who is from team USA 🇺🇸 competing in the @invictusgames2018 -
And then the awesome volunteers from Harbord Scouts at the Rose Bay drink station and the lads from Manly Selective Campus helping with the bags at the end. Bondi ain’t bad, but I’m glad to be back in Manly! Thank you @bear_cottage for letting me fundraise for you. #lovemanly#city2surf#heartbreakhill#running
The @hotelsteyne welcomed @nswnationals leader and Deputy Premier of NSW @johnbarilaro yesterday to chat about the drought. It was a point of pride for me to be able to outline all the effort that our beachside/Harbourside electorate was putting in to supporting the farmers. Whether it was @north_steyne_slsc BBQ last week, @manlylsc tomorrow or the amazing work of @balgowlahrsl - everyone is pitching in, especially Jack from @harbordharlequins Some exciting news to come from the Steyne on a heartwarming (thirstbusting) initiative they worked out with the Deputy Premier over a “Parma for a Farmer” yesterday. Thank you Dave and @ameliaplewes #parmaforfarmer#droughtrelief#buyabale#community#lovemanly#beachtobush

$150,000 Wow! 🐻 Thrilled to have secured more funding for @bear_cottage! It will assist them in being able to continue doing the amazing work they do.
Another investment in healthcare by the NSW Liberal Government. ✅
Bear Cottage is close to the hearts of so many of us in Manly, the beaches and indeed across NSW.
Thank you Minister for Health Brad Hazzard for your generous support in securing this funding. 🏃♂️ I'm hoping to add an extra couple of hundred dollars to the $150,000 after this weekend as I am running the @city2surf 2018 for Bear Cottage:
✅ More delivery. Public transport expansion.
I am delighted to announce the expansion of the RidePlus service to: - Seaforth - North Balgowlah - Manly Vale
- North Curl Curl
- Brookvale and Dee Why
Also putting on another bus, and three new drop off points - Brookvale TAFE
- Stella Maris
- Northern Beaches Freshie Campus
Operating hours remain the same: - Monday to Friday 6am until 10pm - $3.10 per trip (one way). Book online or via the App. New changes come into effect 20 August.
Thank you to everyone who backed me to get this expansion and it’s great to see the success of the pilot.
This will be great for members of @nccslsc , @seaforthraidersrugby, @curlyboardriders and parents who need another transport option.
Again, a Liberal NSW Government investing in innovative public transport solutions and great leadership from a forward thinking Minister for Transport Andrew Constance MP @begamp
