So much energy, ambition and talent at artist #marielaangela ’s gallery opening in #venicebeach . Check the crowd: young, multiculti, excited. I felt like I was seeing the future of LA... and it was good. And yeah I selfied with a portrait of #Drake . #2DopeJews#veniceart#rappers#hiphop#veniceartists#thelinc Follow @itsmariel for hours and info. I love the portrait of the dude eating (of course) but I’m not cool so I have no idea who it is. Help?
On July 4, 1905 Abbot Kinney officially opened Venice of America, opening the canals to future generations of poets, potheads, skaters, bladers, druggies, rockers, poseurs, tourists, artists, old Jews, homeless, merchants, chefs, stars and dreamers. So there’s that to celebrate too... Thanks Abbot. @abbotkinney @thelincolnla @venicealehouse @venicebeach_restaurants @venicebeachfun @venicerabbi @sidewalkcafevb #venicebeach#venicecalifornia

In #Delphi on the slopes of Mt. Parnassus we wandered toward music coming from the home of the late Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos, now a cultural center, it was hosting a recital of new songs set to his poems (scroll). Sikelianos wrote the March 1943 letter signed by the Greek Orthodox Archbishop Damaskinos to the German SS commander protesting the deportation of Greek Jews. “Our Holy Religion does not recognize superior or inferior qualities based on race or religion, as it is stated: ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek’ (Gal. 3:28) and thus condemns any attempt to discriminate or create racial or religious differences.” The Nazis threatened to shoot the bishop, but he wouldn’t back down from defending a persecuted minority in his own country. That to my mind is a real Christian... #greekpoetry#sikelianos#resistance#greekorthodox#goodchristian
Anthomelo is deeply perfumed flower honey from Greece. Citrus, thyme, eternity, love, gods, wind— pretty sure it’s all in there. If you can find it, buy it. Second photo: wine & #Meteroa . The monasteries there had massive cellars of wine. Of course. #greekfood#greekfood#honey
Almost exactly 75 years ago today, in June 1945, the Germans rounded up all the Jewish men in Thessaloniki, Greece, forced them to stand for hours in the heat in Liberty Square, humiliated them, then eventually deported them to their deaths. Neighbors looked down from their balconies and were too scared or too apathetic to do or say anything in their defense. Liberty Square is now a parking lot. A small memorial stands in the corner. The Nazis almost completely obliterated a thriving pre-war community that helped build this beautiful city. One lesson: when we see cruelty and injustice done to others... we must speak out. Even now, even in America. #resistance#immigration#stopthestigma#stopthehate
