Our urban landscapes. With our cities becoming increasingly urbanised, these urban areas can play a vital role in harbouring biodiversity into the future and create ecological linkages between remnant vegetation patches. All this while looking good and not requiring additional water!

The Curious Possum. A beautiful little ringtail possum, out active at twilight in suburban Melbourne, and more curious than scared of the strange man with the big lens.

Monitoring the mainland eastern barred bandicoot. The mainland subspecies of eastern barred bandicoot (Perameles gunnii) is currently presumed extinct in the wild and remaining populations are closely managed within reintroduction sites. Here, I am checking the body condition of a released individual on Churchill Island. This is part of a long-term monitoring program designed to assess habitat preference, mortality rates, and overall health of the animals.

Competition. The image shows a Eucalyptus forest in regeneration from fire and harvesting. The crowns of both Eucalyptus (brown) in Acacia (blue) growing in competition after disturbance are clearly distinguishable in color and show the slow but dramatic fight for space of both species in the area. The image is taken for a project to study and monitor the how density of trees and trees species effects diversity in regenerated forest stands.

Self-portrait under the Milky Way whilst conducting night surveys. Tearing apart the back trailer in the hope of finding the elusive spare bulb so we can continue our spotlight survey that has been going on for almost 10 years. This enormous dataset hopes to shed some light on the impacts of the absence of the apex predator (Dingo - Canis lupus) triggering a trophic cascade.

EYE witnessing nocturnal pollination. Who says pollination biologists require sunny days for field work.... this one is in his element looking for pollen on nocturnal pollinators! Papaya flowers are pretty quiet during the day but just after dusk it is a different story, with hawk moths (Sphingidae) whizzing between flowers as they feed on nectar.

It is not clear why certain species of plankton glow in the dark, but it is thought that biolumescence might be a way to avoid predators or attract mate. Watching the see glow as waves reach the shore under the milky way is truly an extraordinary experience.
