Simply Sunday. I've got monarch cats ! 3 of them. Im pretty stoked. So this time without wasting a moment I got them set up in this dollar store pop up mesh hamper before the birds pick them off. Geez the poop !
My 2nd Hibiscus today ! Im just enchanted with this !
Juice Williams is just keeping an eye on the yard driving my cardinals nuts. The dynamics are so amazing to watch. Wildlife never fails to entertain me. I try to just be present in the moment with it all !
I cleaned out the wonky diseased cuke but not composting it. I don't want whatever it has to spread. Been a weird gardening season for me and it's certainly not over. I've got plenty still going on !
Happy Sunday from my backyard to yours !
Friday's Flowers ! Home for the weekend to a few pretty surprises ! The Hibiscus I planted in the spring is finally almost blooming. This was a QVC purchase of 3 plants. Only 1 came up. Gorgeous color but I dont think I'd buy from them again.
The Borage was pretty slow to start but how pretty is the pink and blue combo.
Ahh the Zinnias. Also slow going here but just so joyful to me !
Every time I grow something new I learn what works and where in my yard. All good stuff !
Friday's Good , bad and incredibly ugly !
Home for the weekend and Oh brother what a difference 4 days can make !
Starting with a Milkweed I transplanted, and never thought it would take. Well she did and in bloom ! So yay me !
Onto the weirdest stringbean plants ever. Dead in the pot only to be full of flowers and pretty lush. 12 feet up ! Now how in the world am I supposed to harvest beans? By ladder? Like Jack in the Beanstalk? Come on God, I appreciate a sense of humor but really??
And my cucumbers. Well what in the world is going on here? I have never had trouble with cukes. Molded on the plant ? Yikes. I left the other day and counted 11 cukes. Today I was able to harvest 3 decent ones, but the rest are kaput ! Looks like I will be yanking these plants out tomorrow and I don't think they are bound for the compost with whatever disgusting disease they have.
I tell ya, gardening isn't always happily tip toeing thru the tulips. Its bugs and pests and weirdo diseases. Its too much rain or none at all. Its too hot. Too cold. Too buggy. But I wouldn't for a second not want to continue digging and poking around in the dirt. For every fail , there is a win ! I'm happy to be back home for the weekend. Even though I'm watching the skies turn black and the wind is kicking up !
Happy Friday from my backyard to yours !
Back at mom's and my new pal apparently was waiting for me. This was as close as he/ she ( I think a he) would let me. I shall call him/ her Rocky as he blended into the buried stone bunny. (Which I need to pull out. ) But I noticed something I hadn't seen before. Legs from behind a pot ( lower left side of pic)
Well to my surprise I uncovered this sweet woodlands cherub. He's going to need a good washing but he's incredibly adorable.
Monday's Magic ! These sweet peas which are easily 40+ yrs old are still blooming in August. Pretty unusual actually as they have always been a late spring bloomer. They come up the same place each year, sometimes more than others but I'm always delighted to see them.
And today one of the rogue Rose of Sharon's bloomed. These pop up everywhere on my property. Rather invasive so I have to pick and choose who gets to stay and who goes into the compost ! Such a pretty color !
Happy Monday from my rainy ( again ) backyard to yours !
Simply Sunday. Graced with this little beauty on the oregano flowers between the rain today. Not sure what she is but she was so pretty and delicate.
Feeling rather delicate myself I decided to make myself a cocktail. But hmm, what to make. I had a nice tequila, had 1 kinda stiff lime, and some cut up pineapple that had seen better days. So popped that little stiff lime into the microwave to loosen up every drop of juice, tossed that old pineapple into the blender, muddled a good handful of mint from my garden and into my shaker with a healthy dose of tequila , topped off with a few drops of agave. Shake shake shake and I'm calling this Donna's Delicate Delight ! Best marguerita ever !
Happy Sunday Night !
She's been flirting with me for a couple of weeks. Flitting about checking the joint out ! Circling around me today she landed ! Stayed a good 5 minutes drinking. Maybe she laid eggs. I dunno. But she made my day !
31 years in this house with loads of cool shit growing and lots of wildlife and she truly humbled me today.
I caught a piece the other night on PBS, about the Monarch journey from Mexico on thier way to North America. Pretty cool but pretty scary to see the #s of these beauties go down yearly.
God's creatures great and small need our help. Plant a milkweed. Stop using poisons. Smile more. Be thankful and grateful. Simple !
Happy Saturday from my backyard to yours !
I'm calling this Feathered Friend Friday. Yes it may technically be Saturday for some , its still Friday because I have yet to lay my head on the pillow.
So as I do when I come home on Fridays , I do my little walk about . I watched a monarch snooping around. The milkweeds are growing lush and healthy. She was clearly interested. I sat on my blue bench quietly just to watch. And this darling little House Wren just came to the fountain. Not 2 feet from me. She drank. She sat. She wiped her beak. It was pretty cool.
So back home for the weekend and we have the good , the bad and the ugly ! My Kentucky Wonder beans look like poop. Yellow, falling leaves, zero flowers on the bottom of this trellis. They have grown up past an additional 12' bamboo stake I shoved in, and look decent up top. Shrug. Then my tomatoes, well the pool ones anyway. Pretty ugly looking. I'm not so sure I like these fabric grow bags. My regular potted tomatoes look much better, Altho I'm still weeks away from getting tomatoes. That will teach me to start so late. And my cukes. Finally found a couple hidden. Such is the life of a weekend gardener with crazy weather. Supposed to rain the 3 days I'm home ! Looks like I'll be working on seed packs !
Happy Friday from my backyard to yours !
I may not have tomatoes or cucumbers to show off yet, but I do have cats !
My 2 sisters and thier 1/2 brother ( yep thier mom was a trollop) waiting on dinner. Juice Williams is the friendliest and most territorial. No stray shall pass with him around. Miss Zoie in the box is the most photogenic and has what we call "scootchy ass" . No health issues just her ass ocd ! Then we have Gypsy, very beautiful, extremely intense and will turn on you in a flash.
Then at my moms is Lulu, who appeared out of the woods 2 yrs ago when I brought my dad home from the hospital. I named her after him , he was Louis ! She is the sweetest, most loving and happy cat. She lives on the covered patio with a range of shelters to keep her cozy, warm and dry. She wants nothing to to with coming inside.
All my cats are neutered, spayed and flea and tick treated. All rescues. All incredibly hairy and loved !
Happy International Cat Day!
Monday Morning and my Monarch caterpillars are gone. Gone as in no longer amongst the living by the looks of the little murder scene on the stone. Not that whoever dined on it left anything but I can tell .
But I did have my 1st Edamame harvest ! If you have never grown them, they are super easy peasy, have no real pest issues and are so much more delicious than the ones you get in any sushi joint. I buy my seeds from @pvfsgroworganic. GMO free and organic. They went perfect with these banging pork chops on the grill !
Happy Monday !
