This one looks similar to the previous one I posted right before. It does so, because I was unsatisfied with the way the previous came out and attempted to make it again. Not the same piece, but something that addressed the lyrics and my emotions in way that I thought was closer to my intentions.
-
Not everything posted is artwork that I think is good or “works”. In fact most of my posts are to document the path I am on regardless of the final outcome. The idea of “good” or “bad” is inconsequential. I tend to aim for work that can teach me something, or that allows me to grow in a particular way. While I am more satisfied with the way this ended, very little has to do with the final aesthetic.
-
I feel that this piece conveys a sense of harmony and a certain balance with regards to the emotional journey of previous pieces. I also approached the text with a bit more sensitivity and delicacy. I often find that rage, anger, frustration, intensity are forces that I can channel easier into the work. But stumble when it comes to a more warm, soft or even measured approach.
-
I am glad I went directly back into the work to make this piece. It showed me a way to find peace within an emotional spectrum and how to navigate some of the inner challenges.

Ps: yes, the painting is shown on its side. It should really be vertical, but I like this photo and didn’t not want to turn it...

Looking back at this piece, I realize that much of what the painting looks like was born out of actions not seen in the final result. I am sure this is true for most artist (and for most things in life). I attempted to find a balance between the material exploration and the movements and actions of my body. In other pieces I try to create a direct and instant relationship between gestures and my body movements with what is visible on the canvas. But in this particular piece, I sought to allow the result to be driven directly by the actions without regards to what it looks like. This is in keeping with my desire to avoid metaphorical or analogous readings of the work. Instead I sought to find an honest and authentic expression of the material reality, the gestures derived from such material and consequently what is left behind on the canvas.
This occurred through the act of washing the canvas with turpentine after oil had been applied and rolling the canvas in a way that it would hide or obscure phrases. The dialogical relationship between action and material seem highly appropriate to the emotional demands put on by the lyrics and the content. This is to say that while performing these actions during the process of painting, the work became cathartic.
Not sure if this is evident in the final result?
-
Beyond pouring turpentine after writing with graphite, spilling oil and varnish on the canvas, I also incorporated sand as an absorbing agent to speed up the drying process. The alchemy of elements and actions created it own image.

Working with crude oil is challenging and rewarding. There is an urgency that sets in as it can be a tricky material to use. It is hard not to think about the ontological implications of it. The pressure, the time frame which makes it be. All of it stares back in its thick goopy substance. But at the same time there is something very delicate about it. It won’t dry by itself. If left exposed it would take thousands of years to dry. So it has to be mixed with a drying agent. After several experiments, I chose polyurethane, the most neutral of all choices. The irony being that polyurethane derived from crude in the first place. This onto itself is fodder for thought.
-
In this painting you can see the heaviness that sets in with crude. The richness of the color, not black, more like molasses. Crude has many variations of color based on the well, the compounds, what part of the planet it is from, etc. It is fascinating to consider and on many levels it is not dissimilar to the way emotions can brew inside of us. The parallels between these two entities was present during the process.
-
I struggle to stay clear of metaphorical implications in my work, avoiding representational significance or associations. I opt for a direct and authentic expression rather than a similitude to something else. I would like to think that in using such a charged material like crude, I am able to honor its material quality while staying true to my approach. Not sure I have achieved that...

Full shot of the actual piece created in front of the pump. It was tricky to make as there are many variables of working outdoors when it comes to using crude oil. Added to that the intense energy and emotional rawness of the environment and thematic exploration. Needless to say having fighter jets zooming by!
-
The piece also had to be transported while wet. This meant calibrating the ratio of crude oil to polyurethane and carefully moving it to the back of a pick up. The mere logistics was a feat. It also taught all of us a lesson in letting go. Letting go of the expectations and accepting the outcome. Luckily it went very smoothly and what you see here is the final piece.
-
Special shout out to the guys at #spetco who helped and provided guidance to pull this off.

From very early on in this project @kickstq had a vision to create a piece out in the oil fields. This time lapse captures what he first described in my studio: crude, oil fields, the untamed nature of the desert. To turn that vision into a reality has been the effort of many folks and months of planning.
With a crew of four vehicles we ventured out to a pump in the middle of the oil fields. The rawness of the desert plus the personal nature of this piece made for a surreal experience. His past, the interviews, my emotions and our collective action collapsed into one reality.

It is amazing to bring this to life.

More to come.

A behind the scenes video capturing the moments where text is incorporated into the work. From the very beginning @kickstq wanted selected lyrics to be an integral part of the work. This presented a particular challenge to me, as I have struggled with how to express text in a manner that is in synch graphically with my visual language, and enhances the emotional landscape of the work.
I also incorporated text from the extensive interviews conducted over 2.5 months. There are phrases and sentences which are triggers for memories and reminders that render a particular emotion for @kickstq. All of which embed the work with a personal narrative.
-
The video shooting and editing was done by the super talented @therealperfectionist. Such a pleasure working with him and the rest of the crew. So many folks behind the scene. Stay tuned for that, more videos and photos of the rest of the paintings.

I first met @kickstq in August through a mutual friend at my studio in Bangkok.
I showed him the Intimacy series— a group of paintings inspired by the song “Umi Says” by Mos Def. It spoke to him immediately because of his love for Hip Hop and his appreciation of how I incorporated lyrics into the paintings.
He was also taken back by the use of charcoal as a dominant feature on all my paintings. The studio is covered in it- the art, the walls, the floors. Black splatters are everywhere. It automatically reminded him of crude oil and what the oil fields in Kuwait look and feel like.
It didn’t take long for him to conjure up a way for us to collaborate.
The idea was to pick lyrics from 2 tracks:
Kid Cudi: Mr. Rager and Kanye’s: “Hell of a Life”. These lyrics specifically related to a very dark time in his life. A place he thought he would never come out of.

The use of crude oil in this project was fundamental to the conceptual and artistic goals. Learning about crude oil and how to use it as a medium was a significant challenge that forced me to evolve my process. Likewise the idea of creating an intimacy space for exploration and collaboration meant that we needed to be vulnerable in ourselves. For two and a half months I interviewed @kickstq on a very broad range of topics. There were no limits.
This project is the outcome of his bravery to face head on a period of self destruction and darkness, and my ability to take all of this emotional, personal and intimate information and express it on canvas.

We are working on a series of videos that will further explain the story. Keep an eye out for my Instagram stories. -

As part of the original exploration into the emancipation of the soul, I also made these 4 other pieces. The more I dig into the work, the clearer things become.
I wrote the following text, which became the literal text in the 4 pieces. As you can see in 3 images the text was written on one single piece of canvas measuring 8 meters. I had to cut the canvas to move it.

The act of emancipation allows the soul to escape the confines of a body and to migrate beyond it. The soul is never bound to a body. While the soul and body are finite, the soul can transcend the embodiment of a singular shape to extend beyond time and space. In doing so, the soul can experience a freedom that the body is incapable of achieving.

It is through the soul that we are truly tethered to the universe.

The incorporeal aspects of the soul means that it is separate from the body. In these two sets of paintings I am exploring the immediate act of separation. How the soul pulls away.

The set on the right is the intensity created by such act. I imagine it to be a forceful event, where the body holds on to the immortal aspects of it’s being.

The left is the recomposition of the soul into a new shapeless state.
