Don't smoosh the baba! Whilst there are contraindicated postures in pregnancy, (inversions, twists, backward bending) there are safe variations that can bridge (no pun intended) the asana gap. These adaptations seem to fall into two main categories 1. Find length and space 🚀 Your insides are now a house. In a side bend, for example, my unpregnant body would extend through one side and deliciously compress through the other. The compression restricts blood flow allowing for a tourniquet effect when released, flushing that area with fresh and oxygenated blood. Now I am a house, I find extension through BOTH sides of the body feeling the muscular activation of the posture through the extended side but without smooshing the other 2. Your core ain't so sure! As well as not using your core to smoosh the baba, it can no longer hold your weight in the same way leaving your back muscle to take the strain. This makes all inversions risky to your (now not-so supported) spine. It's the same reason your shouldn't lift stuff. I thought the cramps and pain were my body having trouble stretching into pregnant mode. Turns out its been approaching it all too too enthusiastically. The hormone ‘Relaxin’ which preggos produce so they can push a baby through their pelvis has caused my, already atypical, connective tissue to stop holding skeleton together with any enthusiasm. Most of the persistent, tooth-clenching, sleep-stealing pain I was in was because my SI joint was dislocated. When it was discovered and relocated, the sharp pains in my soft tissue subsided immediately but the adjustment put my back out and I couldn’t walk for a week. Yesterday my left leg nearly fell off when I broke into a taxi-catching trot. F-sake. It clunked back into its socket on the mat this morning, I nearly puked. Feels loads better now which is great because I’m hobbling my wobbly self down to Brighton to see my beloved teacher @wearejared in the school where I took, and later taught, my first ever yoga classes @yogainthelanes A great side-effect of all this continuous discomfort is that I’ve been learning loads about about the exciting world of my pelvis and about relieving hip and pelvic girdle pain on the mat. Forward folds! Yay! My happy place. So far, the prenatal adaption for this has just been a little more width in the foot placement (so tummy has some space). Fab. Everyone knows it’s the law that you must Instafold on your tippy-toes, or how will your legs look long and pretty? But if you are tight of a hamstring, I urge you to practice with grounded feet, straight legs and a straight back otherwise how will it ever change? (flick for flat-footed fold) Starting with both legs fully engaged, I pour my attention into my feet. Are the mounds of the big, and little toe baring equal weight? How about the centre of the heels? I start with an inhale, lengthening all sides of the torso and imagine the lower belly as leading the weight forward. Pressing through both heels helps maintain the length until the body is laid against the front leg. A standing backbend with a twist! I nearly bolted this challenge when I saw a Dancer variation was day 2 😭😭😆 I confess I’ve backed RIGHT off the balancing postures since my little passenger arrived. But actually, and as is often the case, that which makes you want to run screaming is of the most benefit. So how to approach my first Standing Bow in four months (yes four 😱)? Well, not in a park 😂 on my mat in the quiet dark of an 8am practice. Lots of focus on grounding the standing foot and engaging the standing leg. Using the breath to maintain length in both sides of the torso and keeping keen attention in the tendons around the pubic bone and in the solar plexus. 1st yoga challenge with my little passenger on board and as they’re a #WERKingprogress I thought I’d jump in with inspiring yoga mama @silver_cloudss And show some prenatal variations 💕WERKingprogress day one Side Plank 💥 I have been approaching my prenatal practice with the questions “what is active when I usually undertake this posture? What is relaxed when I usually undertake this posture?“ this way I aim to keep the integrity of the poses. Here I am using the bottom leg to support my core, I am keeping the top leg fully engaged strengthening inner and outer thigh, glute and outer calf. I am keeping wide collarbones with one shoulder stacked over the other (in this case I happen to be slightly overextending) And hugging the muscles of my bicep and tricep into wards the bone in both arms. 14 weeks today. If you don’t know, the amazing charity Tommys have a midwife line you can call if your feeling worried about your pregnancy. I’m doing lots of relaxation practice and positive meditation but frankly I assume it’s dead about three times a week. Why can’t I just be happy about it? My own midwife is great, but the thing about that helpline is they speak to women who’ve had multiple miscarriages all. day. long. When I called, a midwife answered straight away. One thing she talked to me about was ‘the innocence of pregnancy’, the wide-eyed expectation, the anticipation; I see it all around me but I just can’t feel it. When you’ve lost so many, a pregnancy just doesn’t mean ‘baby’ anymore. I’d never looked at it like this but it makes sense to me. I feel such fear for my friends when they tell me they’re expecting. I hold my breath for them. It’s the sum of my own experience. I am so grateful to be pregnant. It is amazing (and also scary and pretty gross). Enjoying my new found appetite 🙌 I’ve always loved food and cooking but fatigue doesn’t just keep you out of the kitchen, it commonly causes persistent nausea. Because I’m a skinny wee creature, periods of low appetite we’re always accompanied by guilt; how will I ever recover if I can’t even eat! But as my understanding deepens I realise the fatigued body can’t actually digest what you give it. It is saying saying ‘could you not put anything down here please? I’m having a bit of a shocker.’ The first 8 weeks if my pregnancy saw a spectacular remission of symptoms. Waking up NOT feeling like I’ve had ten pints and the flu. Imagine?!?!? 😱 As evidenced, I used a lot of that energy to create and devour food. And photo it 🤣😂 it just looked so damn beautiful 😍 late night peach pie and early morning mini quiches. In recent weeks, though, the fatigue has returned like ten tons of wet laundry on my head. Three days ago I returned to a daily asana practice after a staggering THREE MONTHS of no postures (blog link in bio) I had worried that my strong, 1st trimester aversion to asana was simply the product of a fearful mind. The couple of short, gentle practices I undertook felt risky and just incorrect in the body. To my utter delight, the call to practice returned almost exactly as my 1st trimester came to an end. Little hack for those who are badly missing their coffee 😫 I am absolutely passionate about my coffee but increased risk of miscarriage associated with caffeine consumption means I just have one small cup per day. I take mine in Oatly Barista milk (creamiest non-cow milk I’ve found) and a teaspoon of maple syrup 😋 making it through the day without another feels unpleasantly deprived. I’ve been making this sudo-latte with one square of very bitter chocolate devolved in hot oat milk with a teaspoon of maple and a little cinnamon on top. If you can be arsed, whiz it in the blender so it goes frothy. To all my Potsies wilting in the heat, the struggle is real 😂 but as much as the heat aggravates the ol’ orthostatic intolerance, I have always loved being in the sun. I joke that I have a solar panel, I’m so energised by it but WOW since I’ve been preggers the heat is NOT my friend! I have visited some fantastically hot places but I think it’s possible that never before today have I been ‘too hot’. Doesn’t matter what week or what your history. Until this pregnancy I’ve literally never had good news at a scan, so why talk about it? Why not wait until 12 weeks? The more people you tell, the more people ask you later ‘how’s the baby’ and you have to say ‘dead’. People look at you sympathetically when you just want to get shitfaced and not think about it. So you don’t say until 12 weeks. But if you experience recurrent, 1st trimester miscarriages, you never get to talk about your pregnancy. No-one shares your expectation or excitement, you grieve alone. It’s a challenging thing to write about and it’s not popular content, it doesn’t get you clicks, but it also isn’t shameful and it shouldn’t go undiscussed. I guess whatever the outcome, this time I feel the desire to share it with everyone.
Waiting to find out if my baby is dead. I’ve been wanting to announce my pregnancy to you, dear Instagram. Sometimes it feels too early and other times it feels I shouldn’t wait to share the news. This is my 14th pregnancy. I have no children. This one has felt different from the start. I’ve felt absolutely sure this one is going to be my baby. Confident. Relaxed. But after a scary night, I still have hours to kill before my scan at the EPAU. I’ve cleaned out my handbag and meditated and chanted and put on make up and just about everything else I can think of to stay still and stay calm. Now we wait.
