One of the best ways to slow down your mind is to get all of your thoughts out on paper.  Whether you want to go the journal route or merely do Morning Pages, choose what fits best in your life and stick with it.  If you’ve never heard of Morning Pages, it’s a sort of stream of consciousness writing exercise you do first thing in the morning.  Google it and learn more if you’re not familiar with it, but it’s a simple process that is quite powerful.

I've been feeling pretty out of sorts lately. Having post concussion syndrome affects my sleep, my memory and a host of other things and it’s getting frustrating. I felt myself slipping into “poor me” mode but luckily the word “gratitude” popped into my head as if to say, “Yes, things may be tough right now but YOU can control how it affects you mentally by remembering gratitude.” ✌🏽

When we think about our health, we think in terms of what we're eating, what we're drinking, how much we're exercising -- but we rarely think about our health being related to what we think about. 
If this is not something you consider regularly, start really digging deep into the idea that your thoughts, your attitude, & your mental tone have an incredible amount of power over your health.

We all have something to be grateful for, so it's the perfect place to begin.  Here’s why gratitude is so essential to your health...

1. It boosts feelings of satisfaction
Show your gratitude by putting it in writing. Get out your thank you cards & start writing. Write them to your kids’ teachers. Write one to your parents, to your spouse, your best friend. Writing letters of gratitude will ensure you feel good inside & out, and you'll be spreading those good feelings to those you're writing to. 🙏🏽
2. It builds relationships
Find ways to weave in expressing gratitude for those things people do for you that you appreciate. Even if it's just your kids putting the dishes in the dishwasher for you -- express your gratitude. It will motivate them to keep doing more, & it will reduce your stress by seeing the good in things. 🙏🏽
3. It helps your mental wellness
Taking a moment to be thankful for the things you have despite the challenges is good for your mental health and well-being. Sometimes it can be hard to see the good things in life, so keep a journal if necessary & write things down. When you feel low, you can flip through it & find something to smile about. As an added bonus, it boosts more than your mood by increasing energy levels too. 🙏🏽

CONFESSION: I'm kind of a chocolate snob - not kind of, I am a chocolate snob. Maybe it's because I come from a family of foodies, maybe it's because I was born in Belgium - I don't know. Have you used Essential Oils? 
It’s incredible how much you can replace and use essential oils instead.  For instance -- bug spray, household cleaner, skincare products, etc.  There really is an oil for everything, including the common discomforts we all face. 
I don’t necessarily have a favorite brand. I’ve bought everything from DoTERRA to a neighborhood EO store. Both were great. I love using Melissa Lemon Balm), Ylang Ylang, Lavender and Camomile in my Dead Sea Salt & Epsom Salt baths at night for stress relief and help with sleep. DoTERRA makes a blend called Digestzen that I take internally and on my stomach for stomach upset or heartburn which works great and pretty quickly. I don’t believe Proton Pump Inhibitors like Prilosec are healthy for your gut so I prefer natural ways to deal with stomach or digestive issues or anything dealing with my Ulcerative Colitis as long as it’s not a serious flare.

I have a couple friends dealing with some very serious illnesses and I’ve learned so much from them during their journey to battle for their health. My biggest takeaway? Light. Light heals. Finding light in your dark situation makes you stronger. Being the light for others is more rewarding than any gift you can be given. Being the light for yourself is empowering and results in more happiness and strength. Light is and can do so many things. So let’s start spreading more to each other and to ourselves. And if you can’t be the light, as Edith Wharton says, be the mirror that reflects it. 🌟💋
