RICH FOOD⠀

Rich food, often filled with various forms a dairy, tastes sooo good! ⠀

And it is also quite heavy – like leaves you with that heavy feeling in your stomach.⠀

Know what I’m talking about?⠀

The heavy feeling is fine – every once in a while! It’s worth it! Especially during a weekend getaway in Paris, pictured above.⠀

BUT, that heavy feeling for a whole month is not ideal.⠀

It slows down your digestion, it makes you lethargic, it might give you pimples, and might even mess with your sleep.⠀

The holidays are notorious for heavy, rich food. Mashed potatoes, pies, meats, cookies, cakes, etc.⠀

The holidays are coming, guys.⠀
.⠀
Let’s talk about what might happen.⠀
.⠀
You go to your work holiday party.⠀
.⠀
You eat ALL the rich food. You drink allll the dranksss.⠀
.⠀
You have a lotta fun!⠀
.⠀
But the next day…ouch.⠀
.⠀
You roll outta bed with a pounding headache and head straight to the burger joint. Greasy food is a MUST.⠀
.⠀
You skip the plans you had to go to yoga.⠀
.⠀
You lie on the couch and watch Netflix all day.⠀
.⠀
You crack open the tin of cookies that you were supposed to bring into work on Monday.⠀
.⠀
You end up eating the whole thing.⠀
.⠀
Dinner rolls around and you already ate wayyy too much today, so why not order pizza? And might as well open the wine – you know – hair of the dog.⠀
.⠀
You wake up Monday in a fog, miss your alarm to go to the gym, grab a pastry and coffee at Starbucks and go into work a hot mess.⠀
.⠀
The spiral continues with skipping out on all forms of self-care, and eating the way you feel instead of the way you WANT to feel. ⠀
.⠀
This leaves you feeling like a gross blob, and by the time January rolls around, you feel like you are left with no option other than to hop on the Whole30 bandwagon!⠀

OK I WANT TO STOP YOU RIGHT THERE.⠀
.⠀
I want to stop the downward spiral before it starts, and I have simple steps you can take that will help! And allow you to still enjoy the parties and the food. ⠀

I hope those of you eligible did too!

As I voted today - I reflected a bit on the pain in the butt process. I had to re-register abroad because of my last name change, then had to mail my registration in, got an email with my ballot, informed myself (as best as I could?) so I could vote properly, and then was supposed to mail it in. But no, I didn't mail it in time so I had to find a fax machine today. So I trekked to my friends office because she had a fax.

Now it's faxed in and I voted! Phew.
.
(no stickers for faxers, but I thought her nails were pretty)
.
It really wasn't that big of a deal, but it was probably two-three hours I may have rather spent elsewhere.
.
My takeaway from all this is:
If you want to make change, you have to make an effort!
.
No matter how big or small the change you want to make, there is going to be effort involved.
.
But that effort is going to be worth it.
.
In the case today - my voice will be heard and that is 100% worth it to me.
.
In the case of your health - small bouts of effort, even when you'd rather spend your time elsewhere, can make a real difference.
.

I started Weight Watchers at the age of 12 and calorie counted for years to come. I tried juice cleanses, Whole30, crazy workouts, soup diets, and ate all the low-cal foods I could find, hoping they would taste as good as the real thing.

I could choose to complain about how traveling with a toddler is hard and be upset I didn't get a long leisurely French dinner like I once had in our child-free days.⠀

Or I could choose to be so happy that my son played with his figurine animals while we ate a delicious meal in Paris! And that I enjoyed a glass of champagne in the streets of St. Germain while he napped in his stroller.⠀

QUALITY NOT QUANTITY⠀

I made a rookie mistake.⠀
.⠀
I almost ordered the lunch special, even though it didn't include the beef bourguignon that I really wanted from the menu, just because you got more food for the same price.⠀
.⠀
I was about to choose food that I didn't want because it was a better "deal".⠀
.⠀
When in reality, the best deal you can get is eating EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT!⠀
.⠀
Luckily, the special wasn't even happening that day, so I snapped back to reality and ordered what I wanted; beef bourguignon.⠀
.⠀
And it was everything I was craving.⠀
.⠀
And I wasn't stuffed afterwards from eating 2 extra courses my body didn't need.⠀
.⠀
You probably have done this at a buffet before too - stuff yourself silly to make it "worth it!"⠀
.⠀
But is it ever worth it to feel gross in your body?⠀
.⠀
Is it worth it to feel so stuffed that you have to spend the rest of the day on the couch?⠀
.⠀
Is it worth it to not have the energy to go out and do fun things you love to do, just because you overate?⠀
.⠀
Not worth it, IMO.⠀
.⠀
Don't make the same mistake I almost made.⠀

EBB AND FLOW⠀

My personal goal for the month of October is to get back to meal planning after a whole month off.⠀
.⠀
I love meal planning and prepping and it allows me to be more satisfied with the food I’m cooking, as well as feel really great in my body because of all the home-cooked food (usually meaning more vegetables!).⠀
.⠀
But I still don’t meal plan all the time!
.⠀
I allow for life to happen and love to go with the flow.⠀
.⠀
And September was a month of visitors and travel and left little time for cooking, let alone meal planning.⠀
.⠀
Moral is – I meal plan when I can and I love it!⠀
.⠀
And I go with the flow when life calls for it, and I enjoy that too.⠀
.⠀
Life will naturally ebb and flow – from daily routines, to vacations, to visitors – and this will affect your eating and cooking habits.⠀
.⠀
If you have a healthy relationship with food, this ebb and flow is easy and effortless and keeps things fun!

But if you don’t, this ebb and flow can cause a lot of disruption to your body, your skin, your mood, your mindset, and your happiness.⠀

Step 1: Figure out WHY you want to change this habit. The true why, not the surface level “I want to lose weight” why. Ask yourself 5 why’s like a toddler would in order to get your real answer.⠀

Step 2: Brainstorm some alternatives to your current food habit. For example, I like to make a cup of tea or a tea latte when I get the munchies but know that I’m not truly hungry.⠀

Try it for a few weeks! See how it goes.⠀

Final step: decide whether the habit was worth changing or whether your habit wasn’t actually that bad to begin with (i.e. I think I prefer to eat a few squares of chocolate a day and I’m going to own it!)⠀
