I’m working on my #classroom right now, and this one keeps popping up. It’s perfect for my kids :). #handlettered #moderncalligraphy
I was probably 10. It was a summer afternoon, and I was tagging along with my dad as he was doing some work in the barn. I’m sure my mom had had enough of my sisters and I together–we fought. A lot. Anyway, because I was there, and he was wiring up something, we had one of those learning moments. “OK. Black to black. Red to red.” I nodded as he twisted some wires together. “Now, see? You can do things for yourself. You need to learn things like this so you can do things on your own when you’re older.” I nodded again.

On his end, I don’t know. Maybe he was thinking about saving money on future electrician bills. (Side note: HA! Unless you’re doing a new build or remodel around here, you’re on your own for finding one!) I took it a LOT farther. Like the #idontneednoman farther.

Now, I do have a husband. He’s pretty awesome, partially because he loves mowing the lawn and I HATE it. I kind of have some projects I’d like him to get to, but not really. If I really want something done, I do it…sooner or later, and with the help of YouTube. #svgfiles #handlettering #toolsofthetrade #thoughtsparks #girlpower #womenempoweringwomen #cuttingfiles #svg #typespire

Aside from Bohtieque, I’m a high school English-slash-media-slash-journalism #teacher. I get to help teens become better communicators. Every other year, I plan a convention trip so that the kids get a chance to learn more about their craft and some other valuable lessons, like how to get yourself on an #airplane and use public transportation.

This year, the trip was to #SanFrancisco. There are actually two of them every year, and one’s in November while the other is in April. I grew up in Wisconsin with a very healthy fear of #winter travel, so I opt for the April every time. I mean, when was the last time there was a #blizzard in #April, right?

Well, aside from Saturday, the day we flew into #Minneapolis?

I’d planned to do more lettering in the mornings before the kids got up but on Monday, just two days before we left, I saw something about a weekend snowstorm on Facebook. I couldn’t get it out of my head–I mean, one spot in North Dakota was supposed to get 35+ inches. So, instead of lettering, I watched weather reports, obsessively checked the hourly detail at three locations on the NOAA’s website, and kept an eye on the WI and MN road conditions.

On Friday, my husband was trying to convince me to come home early. I decided against it…after all, by the time we would fly in, Minnesota would already be starting to feel the effects. If needed, we’d stay an extra day in SF or maybe in Minneapolis–it’s a two-and-a-half hour drive home from the airport.

So, 4 a.m. Saturday, we got headed to the airport. To my astonishment, our plane left on time at 6:30 that morning, it wasn’t diverted, and we landed at noon in Minneapolis to a very #snow-covered landscape.

We got our butts back to a snow-and-ice-covered car and got on the road. We drove through a blizzard for the first hour, and then just snow and rain after that.

It took an extra hour and a half, but we made it back in one piece. Thank god, because it had just started to snow at home…by the end of it, we had over 15″ on the ground. You can see my kidlet playing in it below–visual evidence that yes, we can go from NO snow to 15″ in April. You’ve got to love-hate #Wisconsin.

First, let’s get this straight: I don’t really feel that #fierce most of the time. Sometimes, looking back, I think, “wow–that was pretty ballsy.” (Yes, I really think in these words–I’m no poet, that’s for sure.) But most of the time, no. Not fierce.

It’s what I wish for with the young women in my life. If they can capture the fierceness that I only pretended to have in my teens and twenties, life would be so much more for them–I hope. Those #meangirls? Boys that think they own you or only want you when they need you for something? “Friends” who continuously change plans and leave you out? Bosses that think your job might be better suited to a man? Forget that.

Fierce girls know that they can do that job just as well as a man. Boss thinks you might be a second choice? Work hard, but keep looking because you don’t want to be around someone who’s always looking for excuses why you can’t do it better.

Fierce girls know that sometimes a night spent alone is better than waiting all night for fickle friends. They won’t be friends for long, so don’t let it get to you. You’ll all grow up, spread your wings…and you’ll find your people. The ones who treasure you just as much as you treasure them.

Fierce girls know that boys aren’t really worth it until they turn 25 or so. And even then, not all of them are worth it, anyway. If you find one that lifts you up and loves you for you, great. But don’t spend all your time looking for him. You can live without boys.

Fierce girls know that the mean girls only are mean because they lack something in their lives. Show them that you’re hurt, and you’ve let them win. Be fierce.

I’m sure in a few decades, I’ll be able to wrap my head around what makes a fierce woman, but until then, I’ll just keep repeating “#thiswomanisfierce" in my head. Sooner or later, maybe it will stick. #svgfile #cricut #handlettering #dailylettering

My child is an unapologetic 11-year-old boy. He loves the disgusting parts of life, and revels in coming up with truly gross wordage. I, on the other hand, love making him happy, even when sometimes it delves into his interest in potty humor.

Yesterday’s Easter basket gift was an example of how our loves combined. “Eat my mist”? It’s an 11-year-old’s creative attempt at referencing flatulation. See? I REALLY love him. Not that I’m thinking anyone would want it, but here’s the SVG, if you’ve got a gross 11-year-old.

And now for spring break...a time when I really can breathe deeply :) #letterwithme #brushlettering #moderncalligraphy #letteringleague
I’m not feeling terribly chatty right now. It’s the end of a long day, I’m tired, and it’s Monday. I’m just cuddling with the dog on the couch, watching the kidlet watch fail videos. Should I do more? Probs. But, man, I’m just tired. #letterwithme #letterpixels #letteringleague #brushlettering #chalklettering
This is a tough time of year. I'm adjusting to a change in work balance now that yearbook deadlines are off my shoulders, and the season is changing, so I'm thinking of being outside, not in. It's thouroughly distracting :) I'm also working on trying to be around more people--adults, that is. And I definitely this advice seriously. There have been wonderful people in my life who do drain me. They focus on what's wrong, not what's right. I love them, but they are all about the problems, not the solutions. While the others have worth, I actively choose to find the solution makers in my life...it keeps me going forward, and it inspires :)

This has nothing to do with drinking water...it’s more a reason why I’ve been bad at self-care (like drinking water) over the last few months...but I just finished uploading the last set of proofs on the last deadline for this year’s yearbook. I’m all “Squeeeeeee!” over here. That’s it. I’m going to go be excited with the fam for a while. #jerd #yearbook #water #selfcare #teacherlife #handlettering #goodtype #moderncalligraphy

I got my start on #addresslabels--they're the things that make it possible for me to have my new #handlettering toys and addiction. Today, I'm testing out something new--printables. These are some of my favorite labels designed over the last year, and I'm putting them in my Easy shop today to see if I have any takers. #constellations #starsign #gemini #smailmail #stationery
My almost-tall-as-me fifth grader thinks he sucks at math. That he isn’t enough sometimes. He gets paralyzed by doubt...kind of like I did at his age. Eventually, I stopped thinking about it and just gave up on some things. Like geometry. I wish someone had been able to look me in the eyes and make me #believe this: you have promise. #dailylettering #floral #print #homedecor #positivity

I’m feeling a bit more optimistic this morning—it’s the perfect day for a #doover. There are probably lots of reasons why—one of them being a two-hour #latestart that gives me a chance to listen to some #goteamflourish recorded livestreams while doing something that makes me happy—#lettering. This one looks so springy, don’tcha think? What makes YOU #optimistic right now?

Langston Hughes said this one...I can’t take credit for it. This is about being assertive, which I’m not always great at. Even with myself. I’ve been slacking with lettering lately. But...I’ve been busy. But...I’m sick. But...I don’t have time. Stop with the “buts.” I can make time. Really. #letterpixels #letteringleague #moderncalligraphy #goodtype #lettered #handlettering #calligrafriends
This was actually a pretty good somg before they played it about a billion times too many--and even with that, I never knew what Kurt Cobain was mumbling into the microphone. Apparently, the real words were "mulatto, albino, mosquito, my libido." I like Skittles better, though, so I'll be sticking with my version. #letterpixels # goodtype # lettering daily #handletteres #misheard

It’s still that time of year. Yearbook deadline season is still upon me, and the out-of-doors is beginning to beckon again. What do I not need? More meetings. Tell me you’ve felt this way. Here’s my biggest whine (I know, not appropriate for a Friday, but whatevs): I’m always juggling a few big projects at school outside of the regular teaching, and lately, it’s been meeting season. Every other day I get an extra planning period, and on “normal” days, I fill it to the brim with a billion and a half tasks that are ever-changing. Ideally, I would be checking a load of tasks off my to-do list. In the last two months, though, it’s been interrupted SO MANY TIME with meetings that I can’t think straight. Today, I’m lucky enough to get another. And you know what? An email would suffice. I really do read them. But, nope. Apparently, that’s not good practice. Sigh. OK. That’s one of my biggest pet peeves about my job. What about you? What passive-agressive thing would you write on your coffee cup this morning if you could? #letterpixels #letteringcollective #procreatelettering #handletters #letteringdaily #togetherweletter #handtype #handlettered #passiveaggressive #coffeelover #teacherproblems #meetingroom

Today I got the chance to talk to some students who’ve been to an alternative setting for the last month and a half—it’s kind of a bootcamp where they get a lot of structure, discipline and a GED. One of the rules: no phones. As we were taking a break from the ACT (where one kid having a phone can disqualify an entire room of test-takers), one of them mentioned how wierd is was to have his phone back the night before...they all were complaining about how their phones kept vibrating and annoying them. Guess what...these kids, ones who would have fought you if you tried to take their phones a few months ago, like being without their phones. For real. Do you have time without your phone? Do you turn it off at night? #letterpixel #letteringchallenge #moderncalligraphy #letterlove #dailylettering #handlettering #goodtype #nophone

Do the young ones in your life have any...”interesting” sayings? This one...oy. The boy uses it CONSTANTLY, and it’s gross. How gross? “Mist” equals “fart.” Yeah, that kind of gross. He’s a fifth grader, so it’s par for the course, but still. #letterpixels #gross #calligrafriends #momlife #goodtype #daillylettering #moderncalligraphy #calligratype #letteringdaily #letteringlove
I've been a little lax lately. The big guy is coming off the flu, papers are piling up and, damn it, it's still February. I needed to take a little time out to focus on some positive, so I'm thinking about those I call beloved. #letteringdaily #calligratype #moderncalligraphy #lettering #letterpixels #letteringlove #letterwithme
