After the casting yesterday I was feeling pretty tired so I decided to take it easy, but that doesn’t mean doing nothing.

I was very happy with this handstand press from the floor, and back down to croc, but that’s not what this post is about.
Watch to the end and you’ll see me roll my ankle pretty badly, and yet I’m not injured at all.
This is because I train in what is called the ‘dark zone’ a term coined by @garyward_aim.
We’ve all heard the term ‘knee over toe’ and most people I know use high ankle hiking boots to stabilise their ankles and feet while hiking.
But these ideas can actually cause more harm than good, because in the real world these ideals cannot be maintained, and your knees, feet and ankles can end up in all kinds of crazy positions.
So instead of only allowing them to move in one direction, try putting them outside their comfort zone let them experience what it’s like to be in different positions so that when it happens unexpectedly, your body is ready.
If you are interested in seeing some of the ways I let my knees, ankles, feet, and the rest of my body experience movements outside their comfort zone in a safe way then I will make a post about it in the next few days 👍👍👍

After a long and tiring rehearsal today, preparing for our performance of The Boulderers at the Barnsley Mayors parade this Saturday, I decided I needed to go for a walk.
And what better place to walk than in the Peak District, walking through a river after a tiring day is definitely a great way to feel refreshed 👍

I love swinging, but for me lachés have always been scary.
But slowly and steadily I’ve been forcing myself to face my fears, progressively building up to bigger and bigger gaps.
Today I completed this laché challenge that I had been eyeing up for a while, and while it’s not the biggest in the world, I was happy with it, and finally feel comfortable to call myself ‘competent’ at lachés 😜

I wasn’t planning on doing a flag on this tree, in fact I didn’t even think I could, but while trying to do something else entirely I found myself in this position and could hold it pretty easily.
Lesson to be learned, don’t discount something as impossible until you’ve tried it.

This crazy drill is the start of learning straight back full twist, it looks terrifying but it isn’t actually that bad.
You can see on the second clip that just as I’m about to hit the mat I tuck in my left shoulder and rotate 180°.
Last day tomorrow so time to get some things cleaned up and ready to use outside of the gym 😄

In natural movement I wouldn’t ever recommend jumping or landing with straight legs, but in tumbling it’s what you do. My brain hasn’t got the memo yet.

Back on the @acrobaticschool tumbling course, and day one went great, but all I filmed were 4 really terrible back flicks in a row. But 4 flicks is still 4 flicks, even if they weren’t great, I’ll clean them up as the week goes and learn some other new tricks on the way 😁

Throwing and catching with a high level of accuracy are skills that you, as a human (unless you aren’t human, in which case you can’t read, so that’s fine), are built to do.
In 1975, PJ Darlington of Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology wrote “No other animal can throw as man does” adding “A skillful man has a good chance to break the skull of another man with one stone at 30m (100ft)”....... not that I recommend doing that, but let’s not let that skill go to waste.
Get out with a friend and throw a ball to each other while running around, if it gets too easy, run faster, throw farther, or with your non dominant hand.
Plus it’s a great way to spend time moving around barefoot, if you get out on the grass and start playing, you’ll soon forget about your shoes. 👠👠👠

I was going to write a long post about how weirdly designed this kids park is, with an extremely hard climbing wall with tiny holds and nowhere to put your feet, but it got too long 😑

Mobility and strength are invaluable, and the combination of the two is what made this challenge possible for me today.
To cross the second gap I not only had to have the mobility to reach my leg to the next tree, but then the strength to hold my entire bodyweight on only my feet in what was almost a full split.
You can build up to this kind of movement between any two solid things, whether that be trees, walls, lampposts or bollards, although I would recommend first testing your limits with smaller gaps before going to your full range.
Bonus: swipe to see me fail the big gap 🤣, it was hard but it was worth it 🌳🌳🌳

Messing around with the slackline today and combining a few different skills from climb ups to descents to a low traverse.
After playing on the slackline I was reminded how good it is as a balance tool, everything else feels a million times easier when you can be sure it won’t move and wobble all over the place.
