DIGGING | Have you ever tried to dig a hole without any tools?
•
Most likely the answer is no, but these are the kinds of natural movements our ancestors would be doing day in day out.
•
Studies have found the bone density of modern man to be significantly less than the density of our ancestors.
•
The prevailing hypothesis behind this loss of density is the lack of physical activity in modern humans and the sedentary lifestyles we lead.
•
Studies into the bone density of athletes has shown that those who participate in high impact sports have higher bone densities than those who don’t.
•
Our ancestors didn’t need to do high impact sports to gain their bone density, they gained it through activities like these that they did every day, from digging holes, to chopping down trees.

BAREFOOT CLIMBING | 
More barefoot climbing, this one was simultaneously made easier and harder by being barefoot.
•
I’ll start with the hard, it was cold, and my feet started to go numb, I’ve been training my resistance to the cold for a while now, even with the current 6 degree temperature I’m only wearing shorts and t-shirts most of the time, but my feet are struggling to keep up with the rest of my body, and are getting numb and painful if I’m barefoot too long.
•
But on the bright side they seem to be getting better, even though it’s getting colder I’ve managed to go longer each time I train barefoot before giving in to the allure of shoes.
•
Now for how it made the climb easier, the gap between the bricks on this wall aren’t very big, and with shoes on you struggle to fit your feet into the gaps, but toes are slimmer than shoes, and are able to easily slip between the bricks, and as such the climb becomes much more manageable.
•
So once again, get out there and do some barefoot climbing, it’s a great way to strengthen your feet. But as I also said in a previous post, be careful before barefoot climbing if you haven’t done it before, without the support of your shoes you could find that your feet aren’t as strong as your thought.

This was my run on @retrodeano’s Ninja course on Saturday night, unfortunately he had left and taken a couple of the obstacles home with him, so I was left with this speed course.
•
Im pretty sure I could have done it faster, and without falling off right at the end 😅 but @frances_freerunner told me that it was my last go.
•
On the show you only get one shot anyway, so it’s good practice to not repeat the course over and over. But if I’m honest I really wish I hadn’t fallen off at the end.........

Toe strength is an interesting one, unless you’re a ballet dancer you probably haven’t even considered it as part of your training, but strong toes are an important part of a healthy foot.
•
So give some barefoot climbing a go, can you support all your weight on just the digits on one foot? (And for that matter, are toes digits, or is the word digits reserved for fingers only?)
•
But give it a test first, you don’t want to find out your toes are weaker than you thought when you’re 3 meters up a wall 😜🧗‍♂️

Frances • I run Pain & Injury clinic sessions for Movementum. I’m an Anatomy in Motion practitioner and use this assessment method to get to the root cause of your pain (which doesn’t have to be anywhere near the actual site of pain).

The goal is to reintroduce missing movement back into the walking cycle through corrective exercises. This acts on both a physical and neurological level, allowing the body to access areas it had forgotten it could use (this is known as ‘neuroplasticity’ or ‘plastic reorganisation’).

Although I often talk about the benefits of natural movement, I have recently found myself doing handstands on increasingly high and awkward places, and however much I love handstands, they aren’t exactly natural movements, even if I am barefoot.

But just because it isn’t natural doesn’t mean it isn’t good for you. For starters, I really enjoy doing handstands, and as long as they aren’t harming me, I see no reason to stop doing them.

Secondly, I use them to challenge myself, and to help me learn to control my fear, with the potential danger of falling off a high wobbly tree head first, but knowing I was capable of it I didn’t let fear get the better of me and achieved my goal. In the end, do what you enjoy, natural or unnatural, just try to have a balance between the two.
