Physical balance is so SO important for all ages. If we lose this our chances of falls increase and this becomes a huge risk as we grow older. ⠀⠀
So practice balancing regularly. In fact you have zero excuse not to do it daily.

Brushing your teeth? Balance on one leg. ⠀⠀
Waiting for the kettle to boil? Balance on one leg. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Waiting in a queue? Crack out a side crow or balance on one leg. ⠀⠀
Maybe not the side crow. Balancing on our hands won’t stop us falling, but we will be able to style that fall out ;) ⠀⠀
The reason for arm balances in my practice? Wrist strength, challenge, fun and overcoming fear. Just work up slowly to develop the wrist strength over time.

EYES WIDE SHUT

It’s been a few months since I’ve done this but today’s classes are all going to be with the eyes shut. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀ ⠀
As a student it can be scary at first; thoughts of ‘am I doing it right?’ and really having to listen. Feedback is always how after 10 minutes or so those feelings fade and that listening becomes a lot easier. Taking a way a sense heightens the others, but the sense I love people feeling is the sense of self. You get to really notice what is going on in the body. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

As a teacher it’s a challenge. Firstly the cues need to be clear and simple. It can be quite a test of your language skills! Then fully allowing students to do their interpretation without assisting can test the ego. The only time I would do that is if someone was putting themselves in some sort of risk. The rewards are wonderful though. Seeing people experience something in a new light (or rather, dark), but also seeing the different interpretations of what’s been said. ———————————————————

TIPS FOR A DAILY PRACTICE

A lot of us want or try to have a daily Yoga or Pilates practice, yet with the best will in the world it doesn’t happen. Starting small and building up will make this happen a lot easier than aiming for an hour a day straight away. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀ ⠀
👉 Have a visual cue or reminder. So leave your mat out. 👉 Make it easy. To start with only do 2 minutes a day until it becomes a habit, and then you can start adding more time. 👉 Make it enjoyable. Choose your favourite poses or exercises to begin with. You’re more likely to repeat it if you enjoy it. Over time you can then make it more challenging once the habit is formed.
👉 Be ready. Make active wear your ‘lounging around the house’ clothing choice and then you’re always good to go. 👉 Most of all apply Yoga and Pilates methods to your day to day life and then a daily practice is less important! ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Best. Card. Ever. FACT! Well, for someone into anatomy anyway. Five or so years ago I had zero idea I’d find geeky anatomy cards funny, or anatomical text books endlessly fascinating. ⠀⠀

So what shifted? Firstly it was my identity. From being a student and spending most of my time drunk or hungover, I then got into the gym and looking after myself. My identity was more geared towards being healthy, which in all honesty, was at the time for aesthetic reasons. But that identity choice led me to Pilates and Yoga. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Then the deeper I got into all of that, the more I wanted to know and the more I was fascinated by the body. So now my identity choice has many different healthy habits formed from it. ⠀

Autumn and Winter are our hibernating periods; a lot slower and can be said to be a Yin time of year. This hibernation period for me is more one of self study (in Yogic texts it is the Niyama of Svadhyaya) and healing. In this case…healing with Solfeggio. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀

Compounding little results EACH DAY gives the big changes, but in a way you can maintain. Going from zero to hundred is rarely maintained, hence things like yo-yo dieting. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

So find the little things you can do to help, and do them regularly instead of one offs. The changes will be gradual which can mean you don’t notice them until you look back in a year from now. ⠀

My last post featured the Constructive Rest Position. If I tell you to lie there for 15 minutes a day, the chances are you won’t do it. ‘I haven’t got 15 minutes spare each day to do nothing’ will be the usual thought process, including my thoughts. ⠀

The solution I found is to find ways to incorporate it into your usual habits/routines. If I watch TV, it is usually in this position. If I’m reading a book in bed it’s in this position. By the end of the day I’ve actually spent more time in this position than if I had set myself the task of ‘15 minutes a day’ without doing anything. ⠀

A lot of aches and pains can be removed by adding in these little 1% habits and looking at the bad habits which cause them. I tell people in class that being in this position for 15 minutes a day will do them more good than an hour of Yoga or Pilates once a week. And I honestly think it’s true. ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

It gives a chance for the muscles that run over the front of the hips- the hip flexor muscles- to switch off. These muscles are a store of tension and suffer due to sitting for extended periods. Play around with the foot positioning until you find somewhere the legs can rest still without any muscle activation. You’ll know it when you feel it. This then helps the pelvis to ‘reset’ to neutral, which then helps the lower back release. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

You are then lying down to be able to scan the body for any other areas of tension and release them one by one. You really get a chance to feel into the body which can even end up being an emotional release. ⠀

The reason I’m looking into habits so much is because I want to discover the easiest ways to incorporate these things into daily life. Nobody I say to does it for 15 minutes a day but there are ways to make it easier. Start with lying in this position for 1 minute when you’ve woken up. It’ll get you into the routine of being in this position and you can easily wake up 1 minute earlier if your schedule’s ‘too busy’. Rearrange your furniture so you could watch your regular TV (if that’s what you do) from this position on the floor. Reading in bed is another perfect opportunity. INDIAN SUMMER ——————————————————— Not really a phrase I’ve understood, but one I’ve now realised isn’t going to happen. This one has put on his thickest fur coat and been bulking up ready for winter. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀ ⠀ I’ve no idea how he knows to do this as the house is still warm. But he knows. It’s time to get fat and hairy for the winter. Why am I posting a picture of a plug you ask? I’ve been researching and exploring habits in order to help people get into better movement habits. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This plug has nothing to do with any movement habits but is a way to stop a bad habit of mine- being on the internet all hours of the day. So my router is now plugged into this, meaning I have no internet from 10pm. 8pm was a little too scary, but little steps. This makes it a lot easier to break a bad habit. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ ⠀

Today we’ll be exploring space. The space between end shapes. The space between child’s pose and up dog; between child’s pose and down dog; between down dog and forward fold; between forward fold and standing; between standing and chair pose; between chair pose and crow. ⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
