We finally captured our first colour photo of one of the leopards who actively hunt in our conservancy!
The conservation team, who head up the leopard monitoring project at Aquila, who have been actively tracking leopard behavior and movement, kills and spoor, came across the latest leopard kill this week. They tracked the leopard with dramatic imagery captured by the leopard trap cameras over the three days in which he made the kill, hid his kill, returned for it after dragging it into a bush, and finally ate to his heart’s content!
According to our head ranger, Memory Khumalo, “He disemboweled the carcass, as leopards do not eat intestines, only the vital organs that are of nutritional value: liver, heart and lungs; normally eaten first and fresh. They'll bury the stomach to avoid attracting the likes of hyenas who can steal their prey. Also remember the stomach stinks and attracts flies quickly. So he protected his meal”. www.aquilasafari.com
