A fourteenth-century French ivory plaque, carved with a game of 'hot cockles.' Players of the raunchy game would take it in turns to be spanked with their head under another's dress. If they could correctly identify their spanker from their slap alone, it was the hitter's turn to go under the dress. The flirtatious possibilities of the game are hinted at on this carving, in which we can see the hand of the player being spanked creeping up the seated woman’s leg and a kissing couple in the background. Variants of the game are known to have been played until the nineteenth century. This plaque is now in the British Museum.

The prophet Zachariah, as shown in the Psalter of Jean de Berry (BnF MS Fr. 13091, f. 13v). In the section of the manuscript, containing the text of the Apostles' Creed, each of the Twelve Apostles is paired with an Old Testament prophet. On this opening, Zachariah is paired with Saint John the Evangelist – perhaps because the Book of Revelation, authored by John, is suffused with apocalyptic images from the Book of Zachariah. The miniatures of this manuscript are attributed to the Netherlandish artist André Beauneveu, better known for his work in monumental sculpture. It was made in Bourges of Paris at the end of the fourteenth century. ⠀

A silver-gilt reliquary cross made in the fifteenth century and now in the British Museum. Inscribed in tiny letters on the titulus above the crucified body of Christ is 'INRI.' This Latin acronym stands for 'Iesus Nazarenus rex Iudeorum,' meaning 'Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.' According to the Gospel of John, Pontius Pilate had this written in Greek, Hebrew, and Latin on the Cross during Christ's crucifixion (John 19:19-20). Beneath the body of Christ, within the wooden core of this pendant, is a cross-shaped cavity which originally would have held a relic, perhaps of the True Cross. This talisman would have been believed to have afforded its wearer a kind of divine protection.⠀

'And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven, clothed with a cloud. And a rainbow was on his head: and his face, as the sun, and his feet as pillars of fire. And he had in his hand a little book, open. And he set his right foot upon the sea, and his left foot upon the earth. And he cried with a loud voice as when a lion roareth. And when he had cried, seven thunders uttered their voices. And when the seven thunders had uttered their voices, I was about to write. And I heard a voice from heaven saying to me: Seal up the things which the seven thunders have spoken. And write them not. And the angel whom I saw standing upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven. And he swore by him that liveth for ever and ever, who created heaven and the things which are therein, and the earth and the things which are in it, and the sea and the things which are therein: That time shall be no longer' (Revelation 10:1-6). This panel of stained glass is in the Great East Window at York Minster, and was installed between 1405 and 1408 under the supervision of master glass-painter John Thornton of Coventry.⠀

The Tower of London, seen from the south across the River Thames. Founded by William the Conqueror in the late eleventh century, the Tower served as a prison, practical defence, and administrative centre throughout the Middle Ages. Though much added to, restored, and rebuilt over the centuries, the central 'White Tower' shown here retains the core of its Norman fabric. The Crown Jewels have been kept in the Tower since at least the thirteenth century, and for centuries high-profile prisoners were held here as well. It was also home to the royal menagerie, which at different times included lions, a polar bear, and an elephant.⠀

Converts to Christianity baptised in a river by St Andrew, as shown in the east window at St Andrew's Church in Greystoke, Cumbria. Andrew was a follower of John the Baptist, and became a disciple of Christ after witnessing the miraculous draft of fishes. Christ had said to Andrew and his brother Simon 'Come, follow me, I shall make you fishers of men' (Matthew 4:19). The east window at Greystoke was installed in the fifteenth century, but removed and buried in the churchyard to protect it from iconoclastic Parliamentarian soldiers during the English Civil War. It was rediscovered and reinstalled in the nineteenth century, but without all the original pieces and little idea how they should fit together. The result is a something of a jumble, but enough remained of this baptism scene to make sense of the fragments.⠀

Mansa Musa I, the Emperor of Mali, as shown on the late fourteenth-century 'Catalan Atlas' (Bibliothèque nationale de France MS Esp. 30, f. 5v). Musa ruled a large territory around the areas of the rivers Gambia, Senegal, and Niger in the early fourteenth century. He is shown here admiring a gold coin, symbolic of the vast wealth that made him famous. While on Hajj in 1324-1325, he distrubited so much gold as to affect its price around the Mediterranean. Modern studies estimate his fortune at $400bn in today's money. The Catalan Atlas comprises astrological and calendrical diagrams as well as an extensive world map covering the British Isles in the West to China in the East. It was made in Majorca c. 1375, and soon afterwards entered the collection of King Charles V of France.⠀

This enamel pendant, made in the Meuse Valley c. 1160-1170, is sometimes attributed to the artistic personality known as Godefroid de Huy. Godefroid has been linked to prestigious commissions for Abbot Suger of St-Denis and the Prince-Bishop Wibald of Stavelot, but the actual extent of his production is difficult to ascertain. This pendant is clearly a highly skilled piece of work, and at 20 x 17 cm is a relatively large example of Mosan enamel. It shows the Virgin and Child entrhoned at the centre, surrounded by angelic personifications of the virtues humility, piety, mercy, and virginity. Now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, it may originally have functioned as a reliquary, or to house a consecrated host.⠀

Pope John XXII receives a letter from the leaders of the Orthodox Church, rejecting his claims to universal spiritual authority. This miniature comes from a series of miniatures illustrating the 'Travels of John Mandeville' made in Bohemia early in the fifteenth century (British Library MS Add. 24189, f. 7v). In his section 'on the faith of the Greeks' the author of the 'Travels' discusses the Great Schism that had divided the Eastern and Western churches since 1054, and mentions Pope John's supposed attempt to heal it. The Greeks' disparaging reply concluded: 'Lord be with thee; for our Lord is with us.' The arresting combination of richly coloured backgrounds, figures and other subjects in accomplished grisaille, and the judicious gilding of important details has earned the artist the moniker 'Master of the Mandeville Travels.'⠀

The dazzling Essen Crown has been kept in Essen Cathedral Treasury for almost 1,000 years. Due to its small size – with a diameter of just 12cm – the crown was long thought to have been used in the coronation of three-year-old Holy Roman Emperor Otto III in 983. However, on stylistic grounds it cannot have been made much earlier than the mid-eleventh century, long after Otto's death. Even so, the Essen Crown is the earliest known example of the famous 'lily crown' shape, with fleur-de-lis tines. The entire surface of the golden band is densely packed with precious gems, hundreds of pearls, and even an Ancient Roman intaglio. Until the sixteenth century, the crown was used in the annual ritual coronation of the 'Golden Madonna of Essen,' a remarkable statue also kept in the cathedral. The Essen Crown may even have been made for this purpose. ⠀

The towering gothic structure of Albi Cathedral, in the south of France. Earlier cathedrals stood on this site, but the present brick building was erected as a symbol of triumphant Catholicism following the Albigensian Crusade, a bloody campaign to stamp out Cathar heresy in Languedoc in the early thirteenth century. Not only does the church resemble something of a fortress, it is in fact defensible with a moat, high windows, and extremely thick brick walls. It is thought to be one of the largest brick buildings in the world. In contrast to the austere exterior, the interior houses a large and historically important cycle of sixteenth-century frescoes. ⠀

When this reliquary cross was dismantled for photography in 1926, a desiccated human finger was discovered in a recess behind the walrus ivory figure of Christ. The saint to whom this digit belonged is no longer known, as the identifying inscription around the edge of the reliquary is now illegible. The wood of the cross itself is cedar, and may have been purported to be a relic of the True Cross on which Christ was crucified. It certainly would have had to have been imported from the Mediterranean to Anglo-Saxon England, where this reliquary seems to have been made. It is now in the V&A.⠀

The patriarch Jacob with his famous ladder, as shown in the stained glass windows of Freiburg Minster. This roundel comes from a 'Tree of Jesse' window, showing the ancestors of Christ as branches of a divine family tree. According the Book of Genesis, Jacob lived for 147 years. One day he had a dream of a great ladder linking Heaven and Earth, which angels climbed up and down. In John's Gospel, Christ identifies himself with this ladder as the bridge between mankind and God. Although this panel dates to the Romanesque phase of work at Freiburg, it has been moved and reincorporated into later structures on the site. ⠀

This remarkably fine alabaster relief carved in the early fourteenth century (possibly in Paris) depicts the arrest of Christ, shown in the middle of this photo, after he was identified by Judas's kiss. The Pharisees are shown with cone-shaped 'Jewish caps' and a Roman solider in the back left wears a chain mail hood and a helmet. Elsewhere in the small relief – which was probably originally part of a larger ensemble that adorned the altar of a medieval church – St Peter cuts off Malchus's ear (which Christ reattaches). This sculpture is now in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp. ⠀

This sculpture is now in the Museum Mayer van den Bergh, Antwerp. ⠀ .⠀ .⠀ .⠀ #alabaster  #alabastersculptures  #sculpture  #carving  #relief  #reliefcarving  #sculptureart  #art  #history  #arthistory  #historyofart  #medievalart  #medievalhistory  #medievalarthistory  #middleages  #moyenage  #medioevo  #mittelalter  #antwerp  #museummayervandenbergh  #christ  #passionofchrist  #christianity  #catholic  #judaskiss  #fourteenthcentury  #medievale  #jesus  #judas
According to legend, Alexander the Great's thirst for knowledge was so great that he was committed to knowing all the realms of his kingdom. As well as flying across the sky in a chariot pulled by griffins, he was said to have explored the depths of the sea in a diving bell. This miniature, showing the king's submarine adventure, comes from a manuscript copy of the 'Roman d'Alexandre' made in France c. 1444-1445 and now in the British Library (MS Royal 15 E VI, f. 20). The miniatures are attributed to the Talbot Master.⠀

The crucified body of Christ, carved in Spain in the late fourteenth century and now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. Originally, this large wooden corpus would have hung above an altar or sat on top of a screen dividing the nave from the choir of a medieval church. The wood is wrapped in linen like a skin, parts of which were originally gilded and painted in vivid colours. Over life-sized, it would have dominated the liturgical space it occupied. ⠀

Durham Cathedral occupies a commanding position high on an outcrop above a crook in the River Wear. The fortress-like appearance of the massive cathedral is suggestive of the bishop's princely status. Until 1836, the bishops of Durham enjoyed the secular jurisdiction of earls as well as the spiritual authority of their holy office. A good deal of the building as it stands today dates to the Romanesque rebuilding that took place in the late eleventh and early twelfth century. Subsequent modifications have included the late twelfth-century Galilee Chapel (where the Venerable Bede is buried) and the thirteenth-century towers.⠀

A bejewelled ceremonial cross, made on the orders of Countess Gertrude of Brunswick for the funerary church she had founded with her husband (now Brunswick Cathedral). The body of the cross is wooden, which has been encased in dense gold filigree and set with precious stones. At the centre is an exceptional teardrop-shaped sapphire. On each arm is a cloisonné enamel with a symbol of one of the four Evangelists. This is one of two crosses that Gertrude gave to the church, along with a portable altar. This one was given with her own salvation in mind, the other her husband's. Both contain precious relics (but those in Gertrude's cross are perhaps holier). The two crosses and portable altar were probably made in Lower Saxony sometime after 1038. They are now in the Cleveland Museum of Art.⠀
