The main cathedral of Batumi. Now, to the average traveler it looks like a catholic catherdal, right? But plottwist, it's not! It is actually a Georgian Orthodox Cathedral! But when it was built in the 1900s, it was originally a catholic church! Have you guys visited any religious buildings which have such history of transformation? If not, can you maybe think of a few examples?

'Sniping' on the Black Sea and the coastal city of Batumi from the popular botanic gardens of Batumi! This view really gives you a good perspective of how far the city and its botanical gardens are from each other!

Congratulations to Croatia on reaching semi-finals! Did you know, Croatia like her Balkan neighbors is also quite multicultural and multiethnic? Sure, the majority of the population are Croats who are mostly Catholics, but 2% of the population are Muslims, consisting mainly of Bosniaks and Albanians. And architecturally speaking, the country has few mosques which look quite unique in their designs! Like this one for example, the country's main central mosque in Zagreb, which was completed in 1987. Unfortunately located a bit out of the touristy areas of the city center, the mosque is actually few tram stops away from the center and is well worth a visit for anyone visiting Zagreb!

Perhaps not as touristy as the famous Zagreb Cathedral, but in Zagreb's city center, there is also an Orthodox church tucked between shopping malls, cafés, and restaurants. While its exterior is not that special, the interior was definitely mindblowing! 😍

Hey Zagreb! You are beautiful! Who is supporting Croatia this evening? They have been unbeatable so far in this world cup and I would love it if they make it through against Denmark today! In recent years the Croatian team surely has become one of my favorites! 😊

Taking a break from my Sarajevo photography series, I think it's time for a bit more diverse locations once again 😁
About 30 kms out of Batumi in Georgia, you can find this magnificent tall waterfall called Makhuntseti Falls. Everyone visiting Batumi goes here, so this fall has become quite a crowded attraction! Unfortunately for me (and my stupidity), my SLR camera suffered an accident here and I couldn't take anymore shots on my trip after visiting the falls.

There is nothing better than starting your day with a simple Bosnian breakfast of delicious Burek and Čaj (Tea)! I really love Burek, and have eaten my fair share of them throughout the Balkans, but nowhere else I found it to be as good as in Sarajevo! For those unaware, Burek is like a pie with different fillings - most popular is meat, but there are also plenty of other options like cheese, potatoes, and spinach - if you're vegetarian. When you are in Sarajevo, it's worth to wake up early in the morning and head to Buregdžinica Bosna in the old town, that's where they have these delicious goodness! 🤤

Perhaps one of the most important reasons to fall in love with this amazing city! Sarajevo is commonly nicknamed "Jerusalem of Europe", because of the coexistence of four religions - Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Judaism - which have been here always! Although the majority of the residents are Muslims (over 80%), churches of other religions also exist in plentiful. Here at the old town city center, mosques as well as the main catholic cathedral and the main orthodox church can be seen standing not far away from each other 😄

First of all, while Sarajevo may not be a 'rich and fancy' city, it does have its own version of 'Twin Towers'! Seen on the left side of this shot, the UNITIC Twin Towers dominate the skyline of Sarajevo's modern district. But that seems like a silly reason to love this city doesn't it? Read on then! •
•
All of these buildings shot in this frame are of significant importance, because just 20-25 years ago during the Bosnian War, these buildings suffered damages beyond recognition! The tall building on the center is the seat of Bosnian government as well as the country's parliament, which suffered extensive damages. On the right is the famous 'Holiday Inn' hotel, now renamed to Hotel Holiday, from which Serb snipers used to shoot down people down in thr streets below! And the twin towers were so scarred that it's hard to imagine that it still exists! You can easily find those images on Google. Thankfully now that the war is over, these buildings have been all renovated and reconstructed, giving the city a fresh new look and encouraging a fresh new start!

Because Sarajevo is not only full of traditional old buildings and architecture. There is also a newer, modern part of the city where you can see some beautiful modern architecture present not only in buildings and shopping malls, but also in mosques, like the Jordanian Mosque (Jordanska Džamija) seen here. Can anyone spot a Turkish flag as well? ;)

Well, can you think of another European capital city with views exactly like this? Where neighborhood houses climb up the mountains? Where cute, little mosques with minarets can be seen? Where the city has its fare share of beautiful nature around it? Hard to think of it isn't it? Sarajevo truly provides some unique views!

Because of simple yet beautifully decorated interiors of its mosques, like this one from the interior of Sarajevo's main Gazi Husrev-Beg aka Bey's Mosque (see my last post). Sarajevo's mosques, despite being of Ottoman Architecture and heritage, might not have as much decorations as the mosques in Istanbul and this is partly because most of the mosques were damaged during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. What you see here is actually the decoration which was done in the 2000s after the mosque was restored and reconstructed. Still beautifully done!

Why I love Sarajevo? Reason #3 and two interesting facts below! ⬇️
•
•
Because of Gazi Husrev-Beg Mosque, or locally known as Begova Džamija. It can be said that it's the central and most important mosque in the city, which is visited by tourists as well as the faithful. Being the largest historic mosque in Bosnia, this is also the country's most important religious institution! •
But did you know? This was indeed the first mosque in the world to receive electricity and electrical illumination in 1898 during Austro-Hungarian rule! •
•
Next to the mosque is the famous clock tower known as Sahat Kula and this is the last remaining clock in the world, which shows "Lunar Time"!

Because it's old town is characterized by two different historic sides - the Ottoman side and the Austro-Hungarian side. Not only that, the city is home to this beautiful neo-gothic catholic church, which is the largest cathedral in all of Bosnia & Herzegovina! It's really a wonderful feeling to hear its bells while the Muezzin sings out the prayer call from nearby mosques just a few steps away!

Because of the Sebilj! This Ottoman-built water fountain is a well-known landmark of this city! Located at the center of old town (Stari Grad), the water from this fountain is not only fresh and pure, but also really cold and has a really distinctive taste! On a hot summer's day, you would surely be craving for this water to quench your thirst!
