My Challenge Roth 2018 has sunk in now – “I did it!” Rewind 8months after my 8hr 55min performance at Ironman Vichy I thought if I could string together a similar balance in training this year I could quite possibly go close to the 8hr 45min mark at Challenge Roth….BUT me being me, I thought why not make it a little tougher, 8hrs 42min (or #rothchallenge842 ) has a much better ring to it – “I think I can do it”
Fast forward 8months to last Sunday and I went 8hrs 37min and 21seconds. A dream day in a race I had dreamed of doing for many years, smashing my target in the process, resulting in a 17th overall and 2nd amateur overall – “I did it”
In the weeks leading up I had some super strong feelings that I could. After all, I had done the work, believed in my training and knew it was just down to me and how strong I could stay on the day. No excuses, no regrets – “I knew I was going to make it happen”
A blow by blow account of the training - race prep - pre race anxiety - race execution AND body management is probably best placed somewhere else BUT the big highlight on this day was my mental engagement and how focused I was through every single moment. There was never a second when I thought of slowing down or reducing the pain….I was on my mission, drawing on the inspiration from those close to me which gave me an even bigger purpose. It was a blur and insane and I made up close to 10 places in the 2nd half of marathon without even knowing it. When I crossed the line I still had no idea how far under 9hr I had done.
The following pictures and videos are a little snapshot of what I went through on the day. To execute this race was very special - Team work!

Running to the win at the Swashbuckler Middle distance on Sunday 👊. I felt super strong all morning, enjoying every minute racing through the New Forest once again! Big congrats to @brochanwatts from @abcpure_triathlon and Thomas Wade from Optima Racing team for a well faught podium!
It was my forth time towing the line. I still remember witnessing the winners presentation of that 1st time back in 2011 and since then I dreamed of winning the framed picture... Now I'm pumped to have one of my own and can use it for motivation to push on! 👊😊 Cheers to www.racenewforest.co.uk for once again putting on an amazing event. Sadly they have announced that 2019 will be their final year running their series of races, so if you haven't experienced it for yourself then jump on board and sign yourself up to one of the strongest heart beats of UK triathlon racing! 🏁 👍
