I ❤️ Moab 240 Mile Endurance Run.
Run streak days: 2,864-2,866.
Excitement. Pain. Bliss. Frustration. Hope. Heartbreak. Wonder. Sadness. Grit. Perseverance. Love. Gratitude.
All of the feels through ~260 total miles with “bonus miles” on two occasions plus a course reroute with extra miles in the snow for good measure. 😜🙈 A well-executed, moderately-paced first half had me in 2nd place and in a strong chase pack after 105 miles. Shortly after, I would fly past a hidden trail turn off of a downhill fire road. It was a course-marking error at a critical junction where a “turn arrow” and “wrong way” sign after the turn were both missing. The result was a couple hours of wasted energy, frustration, and emotional fatigue.
However, it was two injuries that would ultimately force my hand: a high ankle sprain around mile 25 and then a shin muscle strain/tear on the same leg early in the first night. I landed awkwardly on an oil slick after leaping over a stream, hyperextending my foot beneath my leg while trying to rebalance. Looked like yoga, but I can assure you it was not.
The ability to push off and land with any speed on flats and downhills due to the ankle/shin had graduated from excruciatingly painful to debilitating. I had no choice after the half-way aid station at Shay Mountain but to let go of my sub-60 hour finish goal and slow run/hike it in... 😔
But, I didn’t give up. And, I’ve so many stories and moments to share... واقعی، هیچ کسی مقصر نیست. هرگز! مسائل و چالشهایی که دارید ناشی از داده ها هستن و باید کار کنین تا اون داده ها رو پاک کنین. ولی این که داده ها پاک بشن یا نه دیگه دست شما نیست.
اگه در هر مورد خاصی میخواین به نتیجه برسین باید روی داده های بیشتری کار بکنین. .
به عبارت دیگه توقع پیشرفت داشتن هم خودش یک باوره و باور هم از جنس داده است. برای همینه که دکتر هیولن در بین عموم و در خلوت همیشه تاکید میکنه که به اینجا اومده تا فقط پاکسازی بکنه. بقیه کارها دیگه به عهده خداست!
تعجبی هم نداره که عده ای مورنا رو آدم عجیبی میدونستند. چون اون نمیتونست هیچ تضمینی برای رسیدن به نتیجه بده. فقط میتونست تضمین بده که کار پاکسازی رو انجام میده ولی رسیدن به نتیجه دیگه به عهده اون نبود!

As I look back to my recent experiences and achievements 🏃🏾♂️, taking an unplanned break from running is a tough pill to swallow. .
While it’s not easy to embrace the struggle through pain or injury, this break may just be exactly what I need. I have come to realize this is an opportunity to focus on recovery, address imbalances, tackle deficiencies, learn, rest, and invest more time in other areas of my life.
Ultimately, I often hear that time off precedes a breakthrough. So I’ll keep telling myself that the comeback is always stronger than the setback. 💪🏼

I am excited to announce that I have been selected to run segment 2 of @msruntheus I will be running from Barstow, CA to Las Vegas, NV in April. I will run approximately 204 miles in 7 days. This evening after work, I drove up to my favorite local running store, Runologie, to pick up a new pair of shoes and some Honey Stingers nutrition for my upcoming races. I’ve been shopping at Runologie for over a year and a half and have always found what I need there. It’s great to support a local business when you can, especially one that has great customer service. I love Altra running shoes @altrarunning and Runologie always has a great selection. Tonight I bought a pair of Altra Torin knit 3.5 shoes and they feel great. Can’t wait to get them dirty tomorrow on my lunch run!!🏃🏻🏃🏻🏃🏻
@runologie is a great locally owned running store in downtown Raleigh on Hillsborough Street. Alex helped me out tonight. I called ahead because I knew I’d be getting there close to closing time and he had the shoes pulled for me when I arrived. He let me run outside on the sidewalk to test them out. I know I probably looked silly running in my khaki pants (I’m an IT guy by day) but they felt great. Thanks again Alex and Runologie!

My recommendation on trail running shoes would be to go to a running store that has a good assortment of trail running shoes with a more than a month used return policy like @roadrunnersports or @rei, try out a few shoes. Feet are not all equal and the only way to find out what works best for you is by trying out different shoes.
Here’s my personal experience on trail running shoes. For two years, I ran with @altrarunning Lone Peak 2.5, 3.0 (my favorite), and 3.5. I’ve probably have had like six @altrarunning Lone Peak shoes, but after my second pair of Lone Peak 3.5’s, I decided to look into another kinda of shoes. The Lone Peak 3.5 were giving me blisters on the side of my feet, I believe they made them too narrow or something, but they were no longer comfortable.
I decided to give the @hokaoneone Speed Goats 2 a try and I fell in love. I bought my first pair in March, I’m currently in the last miles of my second pair, and recently ordered my third pair. I go through my shoes a lot because I also use them for hiking. My trail running shoes are also my hiking shoes, they are just more comfortable.
If I decide to no longer run in @hokaoneone’s, I would like to try out @salomonrunning trail running shoes. I’ve heard great things about them. 😊

This weekend I will proudly wear my Altra Red Team shirt and the best shoes ever at the Blackall 100 km trail run.
I think it will be fine and humid, because I'm in the mood for rain! I'm just hoping we get the full course, no detours.

The thing I love about ultra running: No matter how hard I train to move, adapt, recover, stretch to meet demands and strive to control that which I think I have control over, I will never be able to tame the unknown - weather, environment, bodily functions, etc. will have their way in the end and there’s not a thing I can do about it. EXCEPT to chose my response. Real world application, y’all! 🌲
As a side note, The National Whitewater Center is an amazing playground for LOTS of different activities. If you’re local to N.C. and new to trail running, this is a great jumping off point. Check out their race series. Lots of distances offered, races are well supported, trails are well marked and not remote (that’s a different kind of fun). And ladies, they could certainly use a bigger female presence at the longer distances 😉. I had hoped today’s workout would be a great run heading into the Blue Sky Trail Marathon on Saturday. One of those “not so hard you’re dying,” but challenging enough to get you breathing harder as your legs turn over faster. .
But my legs weren’t feeling snappy and my easy warm-up pace was 30 seconds to a minute slower than normal, not to mention that my hand was tingling for much of it due to this damn pinched nerve. .
But I’m vowing right now to shake it off like all the leaves that dropped after the snow. This is the last I’ll let myself think on it and complain about it. I’m staying focused on positive thoughts and going to get after it on Saturday. #positivecognitions#runningramblings
