Zagreb (ZAH-greb). Capital of Croatia, population of a little over 800,000. The largest city in the country. The most inland of all the cities and places we visited, it has a very distinct personality when compared with the coastal cities we were in. Also the least touristy of the places we went. A vibrant and lived-in sort of place, not in any way an antiquity preserved for gawking outsiders.
Lessons Learned: -Don’t judge a book by its cover. There we were, our first night in Croatia. Cold, tired, and kinda disoriented. When we finally found the apartment building, it looked like a concrete block kind of a place, in desperate need of some kind of friendly porch light. But when we opened the door to the actual apartment, we were met with one of the most beautiful and homey places we’ve ever stayed. Complete with baby grand piano and welcome sign. And loads of candy. And mini bar. Don’t judge a book by its cover-you might just miss out. -And another thing about this place-we learned just how much a friendly smile means to a weary traveler. Upon arriving at said gorgeous apartment, we were greeted by our VRBO host who waited up for us. He proudly showed us the place, helped orient us, and answer all our questions about the city. And it made us feel SO MUCH BETTER. And really, if you think about it, we are all weary travelers at some point-if not literally, than figuratively. Won’t you also greet your fellow travelers with a smile and kindness? -Bonus lesson: In Croatian parking garages, you pay the ticket and THEN you leave. You do not use your credit card at the exit. So...pay before you go, and you won’t get stuck at the gate with a line of cars behind you and nowhere to go until the attendant directs traffic so you can back up and pay the machine and THEN leave. Not that that happened or anything.......... #travelmusings#onceuponatimeinzagreb#zagrebcroatia#lifelessonsfromtravel#dontjudgeabookbyitscover#smilemore#helpatravelerout#wouldgobackinaheartbeat

"With the dolls, it's all in the hands," he said, making slight adjustments to the gestures. "You have to get them just right..."
I didn't say anything, but thought, "No... It's in the eyes."
